foxyv··on Aspartame is not that bad? (2022)
It changes over time. When I was a kid they all tasted horrible. Then I got older and they all taste the same as sugar.
foxyv··on Maryland becomes first state to ban surveillance pricing in grocery stores
You see it a lot in "Convenience Stores" at gas stations now. I refuse to purchase anything like this.
foxyv··on Woman weaponizes swarm of bees against deputies trying to carry out an eviction
> Video shows Woods getting into a physical altercation with a deputy on the back of the trailer before breaking open the hive. She smashed the lid with her hand and flipped one of the hives off of the flatbed.

> “The bees came out, unleashed and swarming, angry and they started stinging everybody there,” said Sheriff Nick Cocchi in an interview with WCVB.

> When told that some deputies had bee allergies, Woods allegedly replied, “Oh, you’re allergic? Good.”

> The video shows Woods then put on a beekeeper’s suit. According to officials, she then carried a tower of hives to the home’s front entrance, attempting to agitate the bees further.

foxyv··on GPT cannot even count beans correctly
GPT is primarily an LLM which predicts the next words in a response. To give it the capability to count the beans you will need a specialized GANN or image recognition software that can locate and categorize beans specifically then create a count. (Duct taping the torque wrench to the hammer)

Then, when you throw a bunch of skittles in there you will need to train the GANN to ignore the skittles. (Duct taping a screwdriver to the torque wrench.)

This is all an effort to approximate a general intelligence like a 5 year old which has had thousands of tools duct taped to their brains over a hundred million years of evolution.

Analogies are by definition terrible.

foxyv··on New Gas-Powered Data Centers Could Emit More Greenhouse Gases Than Whole Nations
I was thinking heat pumps hooked up to radiators and/or geo grids. Right now the cheapest method is evaporators which use a ton of water. It's expensive to get rid of a couple megawatts like that. Some data centers have their own microclimates that are 10-20C hotter on average.
foxyv··on New gas-powered data centers could emit more greenhouse gases than whole nations
Abilene is the confluence of three major resources. Massive wind farms that stretch from horizon to horizon, natural gas wells that are constantly having to flare off excess capacity, and a direct freeway connection to both Fort Worth and Dallas. In addition, land is dirt cheap.

I suspect their biggest problem will be water availability so they will need to use some other method for cooling.

foxyv··on My husband and son dived to see the wreck of the Titanic, and never came back
I think the big point is that they had all the money in the world and couldn't be bothered to spend any of it on their own safety. On top of that is the fact that being a billionaire is deeply immoral.
foxyv··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them

foxyv··on Waymo says can't avoid bike lanes because riders want to be dropped off in them
This is why bike lanes should be some non-integer multiple of a car width. 1.5 car widths allows the continuation of bike traffic despite an emergency vehicle in the lane unless someone blocks it intentionally.
foxyv··on US Supreme Court reviews police use of cell location data
In addition to the scope and specificity arguments, there is also the reasonable expectation of privacy. Geofence warrants catch up a ton of innocent citizens and violate their 4th amendment right to be secure in their persons and papers.

Outdoor cameras around a bank, and license plates both have their own justifications. Outdoor cameras surveillance is in an area with no reasonable expectation of privacy. License plates are mandated for liability and anti-theft purposes. Your personal phone is both private and has no other pre-textual reason for law enforcement to access it.

Purposeless walking is dead. Long live Urban Hiking!

foxyv··on Top Programmers Return to Hand-Coding Amid AI Tool Doubts
The Gartner hype cycle for AI is proceeding into the trough right now.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gartner_hype_cycle

Meanwhile the models are getting more capable, but people are beginning to understand their limits as the productivity curve starts to flatten.

foxyv··on GPT cannot even count beans correctly
My hammer is also really bad at torque measurements. I'll get right on duct taping a torque wrench to it so it will pass that test ASAP.
foxyv··on The Pentagon replicated a Ukrainian-style drone attack in Florida
If you need any more proof that we live in an extremely non-violent society, all you need to do is realize how easy it is to create and deploy weapons like this and how rarely it actually happens.
foxyv··on New study compares growing corn for energy to solar production
I think it would be pretty cool if we could urbanize food production. Turning farm land back into wilderness would go a long way to reducing our impact on the environment.
foxyv··on Acetaminophen vs. ibuprofen
I don't know how you MDs/DOs do it. You give a dude medication knowing that it has a small chance to turn his stomach into goo because it will stop his brain arteries from popping like a stress ball in a hydraulic press. Sometimes without knowing how the medication does either thing.
foxyv··on Scores decline again for 13-year-old students in reading and mathematics
Unfortunately there is much more to the story than a number on a line. Just because you increase spending doesn't mean that the spending isn't earmarked for items like digital projectors and virtual textbooks that have minimal impact on learning outcomes.
foxyv··on AI chatbots could be making you stupider
Beware of the false equivalence. AI is not just a calculator that is automating a tedious and repetitive task. It is also automating away things like creativity, research and critical thinking. In addition, we are seeing more and more people use ChatGPT as a source of truth instead of academic literature.

No matter what way you run a math problem, the answer will be the same whether you use a calculator or work it out by hand. This is not the case with AI and the tasks it replaces.

foxyv··on Airline worker arrested after sharing photos of bomb damage in WhatsApp group
You are providing confirmation of a hit to the enemy as well as the state of the area after the explosion. This is valuable intelligence used for target lists on future strikes. Such information is also used for determining air defense coverage and estimating hit rates.

Open source intelligence is a very high priority in modern war. Social media provides massive amounts of free intelligence. For instance, a few secret US bases in Afghanistan were mapped using Strava data from runners.

foxyv··on A Pascal's Wager for AI doomers
Either that, or a malicious intelligence will be nearly impossible to root out no matter how bad it gets because of financial interests.
foxyv··on 40% of lost calories globally are from beef, needing 33 cal of feed per 1 cal
The rainforest is certainly not suitable for growing carrots or beans.
foxyv··on Physicists think they've resolved the proton size puzzle
That kind of makes me wonder if quantum mechanics is necessary for gravity to work properly. Like, without tunneling, photons wouldn't be able to escape the gravity of the particles that they originated from resulting in a dead theoretical universe.
foxyv··on 40% of lost calories globally are from beef, needing 33 cal of feed per 1 cal
Carrots and beans take up a fraction of the land required for cattle. Especially considering that most beans are grown to feed cattle.
foxyv··on 40% of lost calories globally are from beef, needing 33 cal of feed per 1 cal
Cattle agriculture is not cows. It's human beings farming cattle. Also, they are only regenerative under certain conditions. Cows are especially bad in wet soil areas and they can damage the area reducing plant growth through pugging. This can cause soil runoff and flooding. In addition, cattle will displace native flora and fauna.

foxyv··on The secrets of the Shinkansen
It has very little to do with Japan's geography. It's actually because Japan was too poor after World War 2 to implement a road system. The rail companies were also the land developers so the train service operated at a loss and were essentially a value add to the real estate development projects.

This type of development is called TOD (Transit Oriented Development)

foxyv··on 40% of lost calories globally are from beef, needing 33 cal of feed per 1 cal

To add to that, it is environmentally destructive and cruel.
foxyv··on Schools Never Taught Critical Thinking: AI Exposed the Lie
My Dad had a professor that would take an essay, place it on a scale, and then give a grade based on the weight of the paper.
foxyv··on Sam Altman's response to Molotov cocktail incident
Justice isn't just about punishing the guilty. It is also about restoring the trust in our society when it has been damaged by criminals. Very few Americans I know have any faith in our justice system's ability to hold the wealthy accountable. As a result, we will see more and more violence as a natural consequence.

Sam Altman could use his considerable wealth to hold billionaires like himself accountable for crimes that they commit through lobbying or funding investigations. Seeing criminal billionaires face justice would go a long to reducing this kind of violence.

foxyv··on Old laptops in a colo as low cost servers
I believe they are referring to the dumpster support model. The hardware is so cheap that, if it fails, you toss it in a dumpster and buy more by the gross. Using Kubernetes to spread loads across your less reliable nodes ensures high availability. Sometimes this can be even more reliable because you are regularly testing your recovery and backup features and your hardware is more varied.

The downside is that if some piece of firmware or hardware has a vulnerability you have a larger attack surface.
