foxpurple··on US housing price higher than housing bubble 2008
Land not a premium in Australia?? Averaged size blocks with no house or an absolute dump sitting on the block are selling for $1-2M
foxpurple··on US housing price higher than housing bubble 2008
This is not inherent to apartment buildings and is probably mostly an issue with the smaller wooden ones. I live in a 30 level building and haven’t heard a single sound from any neighbours. Turned my music up to what I used to in a house, went in to the hallway and could hardly hear a single thing from directly outside my door.

Probably the easiest way to find out before buying is to just stand in the lobby and ask the next person who walks past what they think.

Maybe Americans should consider an apartment. I make only a small amount over the average and with my bf we can easily afford a nice 2 bedroom apt anywhere.

Every time I propose this people think I’m on another planet but the lifestyle is really great tbh.

foxpurple··on Court issues permanent injunction in Epic vs. Apple case
As a counter point, I always avoid subscribing via the app as the prices are higher than if you subscribe via the website. Google One has this where you pay more to use the apple method.
foxpurple··on Too much of a good thing: Mourning the slow death of the retail game store
It’s different because it’s a digital product. If you return a sandwich, the product and some human time was wasted. If you refund a game. Nothing was lost. And if people feel free to buy more games knowing they can return the ones they don’t like, it ends up in more sales and more profit.

What logical difference is there between studying the reviews and screenshots over playing the game for 30 minutes and working out yourself if you like it?

foxpurple··on Podman, the open source Docker alternative ported to M1 (Apple Silicon) machines
Every distro had it turned off for ages because turning it on would break docker. So eventually fedora decided docker was never going to added it and turned it on anyway. Then shortly after, docker adds support
foxpurple··on Gift card gang extracts cash from 100k inboxes daily
If someone attempts 500,000 failed 2FA attempts on an account, I think its safe to lock that account/take extra steps.
foxpurple··on How did American “wokeness” jump from elite schools to everyday life?
Want it even worse than just first time? I seem to remember that Russia now allows one incident of serious domestic violence per year.
foxpurple··on Software Piracy and IP Management: Strategic Responses to Imitation
It’s not just eink. So many technologies are blocked by patents. It’s said that 3D printing only just exploded because the patents required had expired.
foxpurple··on It's Time for Operating Systems to Rediscover Hardware
Vs relying on 100 chip vendors who do not give two shits about you once the product is out the door.
foxpurple··on Apple can read your iMessages (even though they’re E2E encrypted)
End to end encryption usually refers to users being the ends and the service provider being the transport. So while it is sitting on apples servers it is kind of in transport but delayed until you make the request to get it back.
foxpurple··on Discord has won over gamers. Now it wants everybody else
No one uses voice chat in public servers. You use voice chat in private friends servers. You get home turn on your desktop and see 3 friends on a chat and join in.
foxpurple··on Discord has won over gamers. Now it wants everybody else
Capitalism has done an exceptional job though for instant messaging. Discord is an incredible bit of software and through just being better, it has won the market.

It’s basically a picture perfect example of the market working.

foxpurple··on The Case for a Shorter Workweek
If estimates control how long you work, managers will tightly tune them so no one gets extra time off and occasionally people will be asked to stay back late because they didn’t meet the estimate that may have just been unfair. Any discussion around estimates will turn toxic when it’s an argument of how many hours people work.

Hours based work isn’t perfect but it means you can put in the average amount of effort and have consistent work hours without stressing over every task and if the estimate is perfectly accurate.

foxpurple··on The Case for a Shorter Workweek
For me I don’t really care that much. I realised I earn far more than I spend and most of my spending is not essential anyway. I’ll take the pay cut and live a happier life rather than working every last bit of energy left and trying to recover with mindless consumerism on the weekend.
foxpurple··on The Case for a Shorter Workweek
The problem is in the real world it’s close to impossible to tell the difference between getting work done early and the task being easier than expected. Same the other way around.

If you are constantly putting out more and better quality work than the average, the reward is you ask for more pay or you switch to a higher paying job.

foxpurple··on New phone can make calls and send texts, but it cannot access social media
Problem is when you get addicted and end up spending over an hour scrolling content in a vegetable state and lack the energy to do anything else.
foxpurple··on New phone can make calls and send texts, but it cannot access social media
The Apple Watch is the right form factor for this. You can do almost anything but certain things are so annoying you wouldn’t bother. Voice control is the best way to use it which makes it great for getting directions, making a call or etc. but you wouldn’t consider scrolling reddit on it.
foxpurple··on Don't attach tooltips to document.body
Tool tips are bad ui because they are invisible normally and are completely absent on touch inputs. Either use an icon so universal it needs no tip or use text.
foxpurple··on Why wild foxes led you to treasure in Skyrim
Even looking back I don’t see why you would care. The fox runs away. The fact that it doesn’t run away to a perfect radius away is probably better.
foxpurple··on Nerds don't respond to marketing; try technical documentation instead
If you include the pop culture/gamer/marvel fans in the nerds category then they are the biggest group of consumers and marketing there are.
foxpurple··on Dad makes teddies with health conditions to help children with medical disorders
3D printers have been in the public’s hands for about a decade now. They aren’t exactly new or interesting technology and the use here isn’t particularly novel or interesting.
foxpurple··on Dad makes teddies with health conditions to help children with medical disorders
The standard PLA plastic is fine. It is non toxic although may provide a surface for bacteria to grown on. Although the whole toy does as well
foxpurple··on Apple and Google seem spooked by bill requiring more app stores and sideloading
Which would be fine if you weren’t forced to pay the fee. If you want to make a mobile app, you have to pay apples fee and have no other options.
foxpurple··on How green is blue hydrogen?
We don’t have to convert to an armish standard. We could have just massively reduced car transport and improve electric rail and walkability.

I’m always amazed at how Americans consider driving to be a simple fact of life where you either drive daily or go back to throwing spears in the jungle.

foxpurple··on Git password authentication is shutting down
GitLab now has project access tokens for that.
foxpurple··on Mosh: The Mobile Shell
The title “Mosh: SSH for 2012” is amusing because now in 2021, ssh is still king.
foxpurple··on Mosh: The Mobile Shell
Mosh apparently fixed the lag issue where typing is very slow on far away servers. Trying to ssh a server on the other side of the world is annoying.
foxpurple··on Mosh: The Mobile Shell
Because 99% of open source software has about 1-3 real devs and after they give up there is no one who can be bothered to take over. Several older projects like X11 and CUPS have no real developers anymore.
foxpurple··on An open letter against Apple's new privacy-invasive client-side content scanning
I’m saying it because apple is scanning iCloud photos here. Unless I am mistaken, local only photos are not scanned.
