fournm··on Debt ceiling: Why the Great American Ponzi scheme might just keep running
Because it's a pointless measure--If $X legally must be spent, one would generally assume that's permission to spend $X. Denmark at least keeps theirs set high enough (for now) to avoid any political stances and shenanigans around it.
fournm··on Steam Controller
I'm skeptical and I'm going to stay that way until I actually get to try it because of the haptic feedback, but..

The face button layout also gets to me. That's going to require some serious mental gymnastics to re-wire 20+ years of face button layout muscle memory to use this in some games (edit: especially platformers).

fournm··on SteamMachines
This is a pretty recent change in how controller support works in (Windows? DirectX? not 100% sure) but basically any third party controller can register itself as an Xbox controller.

I have an older Logitech DualAction and a newer one, the older one will fail those checks but the newer will register itself as an Xbox controller. It seems like Microsoft, somewhere, standardized what it means to be a "controller" finally instead of having an arbitrary button0 through button10 that are always different and constantly requiring remapping.

A good change, but really frustrating for anyone with older hardware.

fournm··on How We Could Write Better CSS
I don't know, after dealing with hundreds of jsps and javascript files adding margins in all variety of ways when they should be a consistent size (that of course, has changed over time and not been changed everywhere) in an enterprise codebase I'll take the Facebook approach for margins any day over just directly modifying style properties..
fournm··on Rainyday.js
Ouch to the 503's with rawgithub, but I like this. I'd love to see a rain track/Chell in the Rain version with this on it.
fournm··on The Trie: A Neglected Data Structure
I've seen ~O(1) as amortized constant time fairly frequently.
fournm··on Motorola releases fingerprint sensor-embedded Android phone (2011)
As another Atrix owner, backing this up entirely. It's in a position where you basically hit power and then slide your finger down along it.

Edit: As a side note, the lack of it on other Android phones is really making it hard for me to want to switch.

fournm··on Hermit: a font for programmers, by a programmer
I like the look of this--not necessarily for my daily coding font (Source Code Pro, lately, but Consolas works in a pinch) though it would definitely help for any presentation that needs to display code.

It just looks like a good presentation font to me, with how clean it is at the larger sizes. Might be my love of 8-bit gaming readable fonts, though.

fournm··on What iOS Can Learn from Unix
From a user perspective, intents are more useful and cover almost everything they're talking about. Most people really don't want to think about the how, they just want to share something to Facebook somehow. Having a standard way to just hook the Facebook app for it is what they really need.

It is a shame that we can't get more app functionality sharing in place, but really I don't know if we necessarily want to bring that much dependency management into the mobile space at large either.

fournm··on What Programming a Game in 48 Hours Taught Me About Programming Games
It's more common in enterprise-y settings, since you don't have to pay them as much. Hire a few senior people to do the heavy lifting and stick all the maintenance programming stuff on the others.
fournm··on Nintendo 2DS
Looks slightly less portable because of the lack of clamshell, but I bet the battery life is improved enough to make up for it. I'm interested.
fournm··on Everybody does not need to learn to code.
I'm more in favor of everyone learning CS theory (primarily logic really and anything else would just be icing on the cake), which would be a more transferable and honestly useful skill.

As it is, the most states try to bake learning how to write formal logic proofs into geometry and they do it fairly poorly.

fournm··on Firefox now only has one HTML parser
With plugins already in a different process, these situations are far less likely.
fournm··on The Anti-Human Consequences of Static Typing
Honestly, the code's probably changed enough since it was commented out to not be worth considering anymore (short of maybe leaving the comment, reworded, to explain what used to happen and why).

Large amounts (I regularly see 500+ lines in a single file) of commented out code is a huge smell and it would take an outstanding justification to get me to not delete it.

fournm··on The Anti-Human Consequences of Static Typing
I'm at a loss when it comes to considering something with dead code or a potentially unexpected return type to be good code, especially in something statically typed...
fournm··on Rust's new documentation generator: 95% done
That is gorgeous and a huge step up in readability over the previous docs (and most others that I see, honestly). Amazing work, everyone involved.
fournm··on Genderize.io determines the gender of a first name
And in more cases than people seem to think, you really don't need it.
fournm··on Efficiency Is Not Our Goal
Yeah. I understand the sentiment on some level, but when you find 10+ broken implementations of the same thing in a large codebase because every team decided to do it slightly differently you start to really, really appreciate those meetings for a change.

Not to mention the (usually) resulting inconsistencies in how it works which can really annoy users.

fournm··on Math, Science Popular Until Students Realize They’re Hard
On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are frequently science and engineering tests where the expected average is around 30-50%! I'd argue those tests are more poorly designed, as they're either the wrong format or the professor isn't communicating information effectively at all.

Just because something is hard doesn't make it any easier on you, as a student, to have to remember and reconcile that a failing grade on an exam is expected and is more likely to cause serious panic about a curve.

EDIT: To be clear, the fact that below a 70% generally means "forced to retake" due to how GPA is handled in the US really isn't helping matters.

fournm··on How Three Guys Rebuilt the Foundation of Facebook
This is more what surprises me--the lack of some slow, calculated migration off of PHP and to something like Node, almost anything JVM based, etc (since yeah, a full rewrite of any codebase is almost always crazy).

I'm in a similar legacy Java boat at my own work and doing quite a bit of the "okay, what small piece can we handle" at a time style replacement.

fournm··on How Three Guys Rebuilt the Foundation of Facebook
I'm always astounded at just how much effort Facebook puts into trying to keep PHP usable compared to switching to really almost anything else.
fournm··on The Elves Leave Middle Earth – Sodas Are No Longer Free (2009)
I'm always amused by how quickly drinks seem to go in order to save costs when the cost of drinks for an entire small department of developers is nothing compared to the salary of a single one of them, yearly.

Not to mention the whole "developers and loose change" not going together thing so we tend to value them as worth far more than we should.

fournm··on The NewsBlur Redesign
I've been using NewsBlur with a paid account since pretty close to the shutdown announcement for Reader and finally switched all of my bookmarks over. I'm happy with the web app, and honestly, the Android app is way better than what I was using when I was over on Reader. There's been a few bumps with servers but they've seemed pretty smoothed out for the most part lately.

tldr keep up the good work, it's easy to recommend to other people looking to migrate. The redesign just makes it even easier.

fournm··on Eclipse committer on Android IDE switch to IntelliJ
I don't know if I would quite go with loving Eclipse (working in an environment where workspaces are practically required instead of only closing/opening projects and having to redefine settings constantly is a pain) at this point, having never really used IntelliJ either, but...

I will say as someone working with SWT right now that I'm not a fan.

fournm··on Polychart.js: An Interactive Charting Library
Between this and the cost per developer, I don't think there's any way I could ever justify using it.

It looks really nice, though, definitely good job.

fournm··on Fizz Buzz: Enterprise Edition
I've not seen it directly in the package names, but I've definitely seen project hierarchies with source/java even though no other languages were used (or going to be used, for that matter).
fournm··on Fizz Buzz: Enterprise Edition
This is my day job in a nutshell. Somewhere around the 5th folder click I couldn't decide if I wanted to laugh or cry.
fournm··on Checkboxes that kill your product
Most of the settings complained about are behind an "Advanced" tab anyways. If you really want to keep them from users, stick a "warning: dragons" on it or document the hell out of putting the ability to enable the advanced tab in about:config.

I'm really, really uncomfortable with the idea of an add on being the only way to configure certificates.

fournm··on Show HN: sachet – handcraft your Vim environment online
I know this makes me some sort of monster but I'm disappointed in the lack of ability to have noexpandtab. Otherwise though, good tool, looks great.
fournm··on Vim After 11 Years
Pretty much--I actually had no idea netrw existed since everyone always just points to NERDTree.
