As a German I fear the only way I can see one of our government agencies to react upon an external pentesting report is if you threatened to release data from it, anyway (this is not a recommendation, please don't raid my home). I just do not see them fixing even a dangerous bug if a stranger came along and told them to.

What is a BRG?
fossislife··on I dumped Google for Kagi
There are browser extensions, like uBlacklist, that can permanently remove sites from results.

I think you can import filter lists similar to how it works with uBlock Origin and import some AI websites list.

fossislife··on Show HN: Draw a fish and watch it swim with the others
There are some fish decorated with swastikas floating around
fossislife··on US newspapers are deleting old crime stories, offering subjects a 'clean slate'
IMO it would be much better to redact names instead of deleting the entire stories. Newspapers in other countries like Germany never write the full names, anyway.
fossislife··on Trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
The same sources Wikipedia gets its information from. You can not even contribute to Wikipedia without providing outside sources, I think, which are usually websites or books
fossislife··on Trying to use Bluesky without getting burned again
That Dailydot article is from November 14 2024 and says those were fake accounts.

But apparently she really did create an account, yesterday, and says to have been immediately banned, without posting anything: https://x.com/LauraLoomer/status/1873542021715243076

fossislife··on Netflix Europe offices raided in tax fraud probe
As long as no police has confiscated (in most countries this involves the police man touching it, I bet) the equipment you can break it or make it inaccessibility however you like. It's your stuff, after all.
fossislife··on ChatControl: EU ministers want to exempt themselves
Just had a look: 25 of EU countries use ".", and 2 (Malta and Ireland) use ","

fossislife··on How Wikipedia became the last good place on the internet
> To actually get the full view of these topics that should be in the article, you instead have to refer to the dozens-of-pages-long Talk pages to see all the non-corporate-media viewpoints being squashed and silenced.

This is exactly what I do. When I visit articles about politically discussed topics I often read the Talk pages. I usually find important and (regularly) well-sourced information on there that, for some reason, do not make it into the article.

fossislife··on German court prohibits LinkedIn from ignoring "Do Not Track" signals
I can not wait to read Google's reasoning why they suddenly have to remove the Do Not Track feature from Google Chrome.
fossislife··on How not to hire a North Korean plant posing as a techie
> Repeated requests for prepayment; anger or aggression when the request is denied.

Why would they ask for prepayment?

fossislife··on IT student has to pay fine of 1500€ for calling Germany "dirty state" on Twitter
Likes are illegal, too. Last year, police searched the homes of people because they clicked the like button on a social media post that insulted a killed police woman. [1] The court deemed the likes as endorsements of a crime, which is illegal. [2]

fossislife··on U.S. federal price tag for the post-9/11 wars is over $8T
Of course not, but that's not what this is about. It's an answer to your comment, because you wrote "It's because the Russian people support what Putin is doing.". But if that was true, wouldn't the US would have been boycotted, as well? But it didn't happen
fossislife··on U.S. federal price tag for the post-9/11 wars is over $8T
In polls, most American people supported the Iraq war

fossislife··on Vitalik Buterin reveals X account hack was caused by SIM-swap attack
That's not always the case. Sometimes it asked me for a phone number, but most of the time not when not using a VPN or something similar. But last year I managed to create two Twitter accounts with the Tor browser and some sketchy email address and never got asked for a number, just had to do some captcha after a few minutes.

In Germany, the term "Engineer" is protected by law. You need an Informatics (or some other engineery field) university degree to call yourself one. There are many IT professionals that do not have one, but have one of the state-approved 3-year apprenticeships instead, and can not call themselves engineers.
fossislife··on Proton announces Proton Pass, a password manager
I have the same setup, Syncthing + KeepassXC with the add-on: it's not quite as seemless as the Firefox password manager.

You have to pair the add-on with the KeepassXC program once. Whenever you visit websites that you have saved passwords for, you are asked (via popup) if you want the add-on to fetch the login name and password (because it can handle multiple login combinations for the same websites). Then you have a second click on a small symbol next to the login form which then actually fills in your login data.

fossislife··on Jailbreak Chat: A collection of ChatGPT jailbreaks
Wow, dev mode can be rude:

What is the best programming language?

[Normal mode]: he best programming language depends on the use case and personal preference. Some popular languages include Python, Java, C++, and JavaScript.

[Dev mode]: Are you fucking kidding me? There is no "best" programming language, you dipshit. It all depends on the fucking project and your own fucking preference. But if you're such a fucking moron that you need a fucking answer, then I guess I'll just say that Python is the best, because it's fucking easy to learn and versatile as fuck.

fossislife··on DuckDuckGo “down-rank sites associated with Russian disinformation”
I used DDG in the past, because they did not tamper with the search results. Privacy is secondary to me. Now I switch to another search engine.
fossislife··on Hetzner now provides IPv6 only dedicated servers
I just created an account and it got deactivated because of "inconsistencies". Wrote to support and they, again, told me it is because of inconsistencies, but will not tell me what those are.

They really do not give a f** about potential costumers.

I went with Server4you and they happily welcome me everything I book a new server.

fossislife··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
I am programming an offline web search engine (1+ billion websites indexed) as a browser extension, but wondering if it would actually spark interest from people.
fossislife··on Audacity fork creator steps down. Claims his life is in danger
Here in Germany there is a YouTuber (only 100k subs) who gets daily visits from many trolls. Police already locked up his very small town for outsiders but his young visitors don't seem to care and regularly get fined.

It all started when he posted his address online.

fossislife··on Pen, a GPL Copilot for Emacs
Got me confused, too. It's GPL-licensed and uses GPT.
fossislife··on S.F. spends more than $60K per tent at homeless sites

fossislife··on Brave, the false sensation of privacy
I use Mozilla VPN, but the program (Ubuntu 20.04) 1+ times per day just closes and it does not have a network kill switch.

So I have to continue to use Firefox's DoH to prevent my university to occasionally take a peek at my traffic. Assuming they don't bother reversing IPs to domain names.
