fossilwater··on Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs
French AZERTY on Windows and on Mac have quite some differences in symbol locations, also drives me crazy when switching to my mechanical keyboard.

In AZERTY, the number row works differently. Unshifted gives symbols and commonly-used accented letters like "é" and "à", hold Shift to get a number.

In Windows keyboard, the unshifted "number 8" key corresponds to a "_" while it's a "!" in Mac. The key below Esc on Windows is literally just the superscript 2 for some reason, on Mac it's "@" unshifted, "#" shifted. We also have a key for "μ" and for "§" in Windows.

fossilwater··on I don't want to read what you didn't write
At this point, what is a human dev even there for?

We have this at work : fully AI-generated code and description. People will give review comments generated by AI which the "author" replies with an AI-generated response, all with LLM wording full of jargons no one understands not even the person who sent it. When you ask them what they meant, yeah idk Claude said so

fossilwater··on Singapore’s National Library Board offers micropayments to build reading habits
There's also the fear of losing a streak one built for so long I'd say
fossilwater··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
I really wanted to move all of my "important stuff" to Fastmail but I found the emails I was sending kept getting caught in spam mail of the receivers, especially to Outlook emails. This is using the default fastmail.com domain

I know it's not Fastmail's fault but it's a big dealbreaker for me since a lot of professional emails are on Gmail / Outlook. I had this same issue with Proton, missed some opportunities because they didn't even see my mail.

fossilwater··on Michigan bill would bar employers from requiring after-hours coms with workers
While abusive work environments may not be the norm for the majority of people, this being a law will benefit everyone.

Saying this doesn't happen to you in threads like this just signifies that you don't care, you basically downplay other people's bad experiences because well, it doesn't concern you.

You may not be affected now but you never know when it will happen to you or to someone close to you, and you would be glad that such law exists protecting you.

fossilwater··on I canceled my French tutor and built an LLM tool that does it better
I learned French, now living in France. I took a course to pretty much improve my accent and to not rely on translation when speaking. Our teacher never spoke English to us since day one, using images instead to relay messages.

What really helped me enforce what I learned is talking to real people online. There are plenty of groups in Discord where you can have conversations with people of different backgrounds and personalities, where you can capture vocabulary used by French speakers every day.

LLM is like Duolingo, you cannot rely on it alone. The OP cancelled their French course for this. You can use it but make sure to have different active and passive learning methods.

fossilwater··on Steam Machine launches today
Honestly, these days, Steam, PS and Xbox game sales prices are pretty much in the same level now. Ten years ago it was very different. Recently I was thinking whether to buy Resident Evil 4 on Steam or on PS (had the same price 9,99€). Got it on Steam in the end. Though, Steam still wins on regional pricing as they support more local currencies.

Only the Nintendo store have games priced usually a bit higher.

fossilwater··on I Canceled My French Tutor and Built an LLM Tool That Does It Better
Funnily the author already made a very basic French error at the end. Wrote "bon chance" instead of "bonne chance"
fossilwater··on IPv6 traffic crosses the 50% mark
Among all the major French providers, SFR lags far behind its competition unfortunately
fossilwater··on Writing non-English languages with a QWERTY keyboard
I speak English and French at work and I use an ANSI US keyboard frequently, but the laptop itself is on AZERTY. I keep three layouts : French AZERTY, Normal US and US International. When typing code or English, it's the US layout, then I switch to International when speaking French. AZERTY only if I don't have my keyboard with me
fossilwater··on Valve: HDMI Forum Continues to Block HDMI 2.1 for Linux
Before HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort already supports high refresh rates (greater than 120Hz) at high resolutions. Also many high-end PC graphics cards offer more DisplayPort ports than HDMI.
fossilwater··on Gaming on Linux has never been more approachable
I still keep my dual boot Windows for this reason. EA decided to put anti-cheat on EA WRC, so now you cannot play it on Linux.

I play most of my games on Bazzite and anything requiring anti-cheat or use of my Logitech wheel on Windows

fossilwater··on From 400 Mbps to 1.7 Gbps: A WiFi 7 Debugging Journey
My ISP just offers 8Gbit to almost everyone, so why not. I don't really need it but it feels nice to know I won't get throttling while someone else is streaming or downloading something
fossilwater··on From 400 Mbps to 1.7 Gbps: A WiFi 7 Debugging Journey
I get about 2Gbps max on Steam and Xbox on an 8Gbit connection. The limit could also be due to your disk drive while Steam is installing the downloaded files.
fossilwater··on From 400 Mbps to 1.7 Gbps: A WiFi 7 Debugging Journey
Interesting, I consistently get around 1.3 - 1.7 Gbps in all of my devices that support 6E and 7 (base iPhone 17, MacBook Air M3, base Samsung Galaxy S24) wherever I am in my apartment. This is with the default router and settings provided by my ISP. My router is even hidden in a sort of a cupboard with the electric switch board.
fossilwater··on YouTube No Translation
Their language detection is really bad. I have everything set in French, I am in France, I go to watch a video by a French guy but YouTube decides to serve me the English audio track, like hello YouTube? Happens to me more frequently when I watch on TV.

There are some cases where YouTube serves me Indonesian subtitles for some reason

fossilwater··on Teardown of a PC Power Supply
Yeah, my old PSU would just shut down whenever I play an old game with vsync off. I’m thinking it couldn’t keep up with sudden power requirement. I recently replaced it with a better PSU and I’m not getting any of these shutdowns again.
