fosap··on Oregon Explores Novel Way to Fund College
In my understanding of the word capital gains are a subset of income.
fosap··on Oregon Explores Novel Way to Fund College
The thing i like about this the most is that worthless degrees are free and usefull are expensive. So it's in the college's best interest to offer quality.
fosap··on 4chan now offers self-serve advertising starting at $20
I don't think so. It's more like saying "I'm an oldfag, I'm a kind of elitist". The hipster who was on 4chan before it was cool.

Being on 4chan might be a kind of stigma, but not very much. I guess the average internet user looks down to thumblr not to 4chan. 4chan are a somehow the cool kids. Somehow.

fosap··on U.S. bugged EU offices, computer networks
Sadly true. The EU is not held accountable by the media, and nobody (or 95% of the voters) knows who is doing what. Without voters caring every government can do what it pleases.

If you thing you know about the EU two easy questions for you: What is the equivalent of a minister in the EU? Name two and their policies.

Answer: qverpgbe-trareny The english wikipedia page does not even list their names. The german does. http://tinyurl.com/pkrllhd These people rule the eu, and only about 1/3 has wikipedia entries.

fosap··on Adobe donated $5000 to JS-Git
I think this is what emscripten is for: You have some _great_ code and want to port it to the browser platform. But I'm afraid Git relies heavily on the "Posix runtime" that is not supported by emscripten, since emscripten does not try to emulate an os.
fosap··on RPL/2 Programming Language - Forth with a hint of Lisp of HP fame
Of HP fame is a bit missleading. HP calculators are programmed with the RPL Programming language,[1] that was both a high level user language and a low level system language for the 4-bit Saturn processor.

This is a free and portable reimplementation, with a few extensions (and some incompatibilities).

There also is a unrelated iPhone RPL reimplementation [2].

IMO the most comfortable way to program a calculator, i personally use a HP-28c with 680 KHz 4 bit cpu. I think it's crazy how much you can do with so little power.

fosap··on Building a Raspberry Pi based server powered 100% by solar energy
I was investigating today into something similar.

The concusion of my research:

- Model A uses a way less (about 33%) electricity, because it does not have a lan controller. So it will be useless as a server, but for my application this is the choice.

- The RPi does work with 3.3 Volts, but then the USB does not work. Yet again, for me good enough.

- Undervolting (the core and ram) and downclocking do not make much sense. It does save nearly nothing and make the board absurd slow.

- The biggest powersink seems to be the GPU, but AFAIK it can't sleep.

- The most inefficient component are the voltage regulators. Replacing them with dc-dc converters was discussed, i have no experimental results. The easies way is to convert the input to 3.3V without replaying and board components.

- Displays use very much power. But they can be turned of if not needed.

It seems the solar panel can be significantly smaller, but not for a webserver.

fosap··on Baking Pi – Operating Systems Development
Awesome. I tried to follow the porting of inferno to the RPi [1], but i gave up. I had issues i couldn't fix, function calls magically didn't work.

fosap··on Finding Sociopaths on Facebook
This is even more pathetic than creationism. This is on par with insisting that the earth is flat. Denial is a hell of a drug.

Using condoms ever killed anybody. Stay save. And if you personally refuse therapy, ok. But HIV does cause AIDS and has a one hundred percent lethality. In case you affected use the remaining time.

fosap··on Germans accuse U.S. of Stasi tactics before Obama visit
While nobody celebrates, i think you are overstating the relevance. The troops live in their own quarters, hire their own contractors and shop in their own tax-free shops. Maybe they are using caps, but the impact on the local economy seems minimal.
fosap··on Germans accuse U.S. of Stasi tactics before Obama visit
That's how the prequells started.
fosap··on Germans accuse U.S. of Stasi tactics before Obama visit
I do not expect to much. Our governments are extremly careful not to interfere with US interests. Stasi documents about the CIA? Unlawfully given to the CIA and not published. The man responsible is now the president. Merkel, started her career in the pro-dictatorship eastern CDU. Worked for the FDJ (somewhat GDR equivalent to the Hilter youth) as PR manager.

Not doing anything against the abduction of Kurznatz by the CIA. "Opposing" the Iraq war, but allow the US air fields to operate. It goes on and on and on. This is just a little rethorics. See also: Isle "facebook" Eigner.

fosap··on Spain builds submarine 70 tons too heavy by putting a decimal in the wrong place
I'm almost 100% sure engineers use the SI system. (unlike physicist that use a system that seems to be fitting). And the SI system says that 100.000 and 100,000 are the same. The Si system only uses space to group numbers like 12 343,123 12 for twelf thousand and so on.
fosap··on US intelligence mining data from 9 US Internet companies in broad secret program
Git and Sparkleshare offer something that is IMO much close to dropbox than owncloud.
fosap··on US intelligence mining data from 9 US Internet companies in broad secret program
> Im not sure being not American saves us. Do you use any of those US services? If so, I assume they have your data.

No, it does not, that is the sick part. But as a non american it's not (or should not) be my business how the usa organizes itself and what kind of politics they make. And yet I'm sure they are infringing my rights.

Point is, I didn't vote for Obama. Nor is it my job to get rid of him.

The file hoster with server side de-dublication?

>I see this "are you so naive as to be surprised?" reaction in almost every thread about this. It's some kind of defense mechanism.

That's why I'm saying you are right to be upset.

I like the saying "being paranoid does not mean they are not after you". And being paranoid turned out to be realistic.

fosap··on US intelligence mining data from 9 US Internet companies in broad secret program
The story that the CIA sold cocaine is pretty much outside of the realm of conspiracy theories. The idea that spying agencies care about laws is ridiculous. Why should they? If they are doing their job right no one will ever know.

Private server with sync software of your choice. Sparkleshare is a quite Dropbox-like git front end. Con: Uses Mono. Pro: Uses Mono.
fosap··on US intelligence mining data from 9 US Internet companies in broad secret program
Yes, this is bad. Yes, you are right to be upset. Yes you (not not really me, I'm not American and i avoid american hosting and hosting companies like amazon for exactly this reason) should change that.

But honestly, are you surprised? Are you really?

Government agencies have be building large datacenters, the EU loves data retention. There was no tin foil head required to see this.

fosap··on Judge: Child porn suspect doesn't need to decrypt files today
>After all, it has the typical signature of a TrueCrypt volume!

TC tries to avoid a "typical signature". TC volumes do not have any header. The only signature is high entropy.

fosap··on Volkswagen's 261-MPG Diesel-Electric
I think the covered up rear wheels are not just a optical gimmick, but safe fuel.
fosap··on Volkswagen's 261-MPG Diesel-Electric
Same for the Opel Amera. Opel cars are always ugly. But Amera looks like it's out of a low buget SciFi film.

But I think this car looks like all the next gen VWs will look like. We will get used to it.

fosap··on Memcached turns 10 years old today
Git, or in general distributed VC.

Not obvious to implement. But the concept was obvious.

fosap··on Yahoo to Acquire Tumblr
It seems to me they tried to buy a young and hip userbase. MySpace was once young and hip. It was where all the bands were. Tumblr is young, but not hip in any way. It's full of strange and not particular "social" (as in communicating and influencing the mainstream alot) people. Tumblr is full of (besides pron) homestuck fandom and feminists. It's full of some subcultures that are ridiculed by the mainstream (like MLP fans) and passive aggressive tweens. I'm not sure if Yahoo wanted that.
fosap··on Shortly: a Serverless Pastebin Service - All Data is Stored in the URL
If you do not load the any executable code from the network not. It should be Javascript Crypto in the browser does not work.

The problem is of course not specifiy to javascript. It should be "fat client crypto does not work".

Or alert boxes: Don't assume people read them. Most don't. They just click them away. Even if given several choices.
fosap··on Shortly: a Serverless Pastebin Service - All Data is Stored in the URL
Javascript crypto does not work. The server can the manipulate the JS to send back the text, so it could be server side in first place. And serverside crypto is worse than useless.
