fortytw2··on Mirantis acquires Docker Enterprise and Docker raises $35M
...the Docker CLI is part of the sale?

What exactly does that leave Docker the company with?

fortytw2··on The High-Stakes Race to Build the World’s First Flying Taxi
I guess the article is actually about taxis specifically, but if the technology exists, they could definitely be sold as personal vehicles for travel along paths that are very long by road, but very short by air. Making rural less... rural, if that makes sense.

The market is probably there if someone could pull off a 1-2 seat VTOL that had maybe a 60 mile range.

fortytw2··on The High-Stakes Race to Build the World’s First Flying Taxi
I think you're neglecting to think about moving people around in rural and or remote areas. Where I grew up (eastern NC) the ability to travel as-the-crow-flies would massively cut down on time to get places, many roads take 30-45 miles of driving to go what might be 15 miles in the air.

In that kind of area, there's not the population density to support any kind of mass transit (or even really taxis) and the distances are too far for biking to be practical. Readily available electric VTOL would revolutionize rural America. Not much to worry about in terms of air congestion, either.

fortytw2··on Mass cellphone surveillance experiment in Spain
In order to de-anonymize it, the data needed to do so would have to be stored somewhere, very little difference between something split and that.
fortytw2··on Show HN: Time Door – A time series analysis API
This looks pretty neat at first glance - however, the pricing being “pay for how long your API calls take to execute” seems incredibly difficult to even guess at what a per month price would be. Simple, sure. Clear? I don’t think so
fortytw2··on Europe continues to wrestle with the long arm of American law
Likewise, I think it's somewhat silly to think that the EU will actually manage to do anything, or even successfully fine a US company with no presence abroad that just so happens to have customers in the EU, for GDPR violations.

What are they even legally able to do if you, as a US company, simply refuse whatever the EU asks.

Absolutely nothing is my (IANAL) bet. If you're not physically in the EU, I have a very hard time believing any US court would allow you be... extradited? Or even enforce fines from a foreign government.

Then again, maybe I'm totally wrong and am just confused about how EU law can regulate those not under their jurisdiction.

fortytw2··on Show HN: SponsorBlock – Skip sponsorship segments of YouTube videos
The "play this awesome gacha game that I _totally_ play all the time" segments on absolutely unrelated videos is awful.

I get that they pay the creators so much money for the spots it's silly for the creators to say no, but I will always skip those segments.

fortytw2··on AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is the fastest processor on Geekbench
I think the bigger news here is that it almost _doubles_ the score of the similar AMD Threadripper 2950X (also 16c/32t).

34650 to 61072 in a generation is no joke, while being both a far smaller, much lower power part.

fortytw2··on Plaid Launches in the UK
This is super cool! I was totally unaware of Open Banking.
fortytw2··on Plaid Launches in the UK
There's legitimately no alternative, "secure" way to access someone's banking data other than by asking for a username/password and then 'impersonating' them / asking for 2FA codes etc etc. As a commenter on the issue says, there is no oauth-esque mechanism implemented by banks.

I think plaid is the lesser evil when compared to rolling all of that on your own for N different banking institutions.

"Yep. We were terminated by Idera without even our managers knowing." - from https://old.reddit.com/r/devops/comments/at3oyq/it_looks_lik...

well that's not very fun.

fortytw2··on Talos – A modern Linux distribution for Kubernetes
kubernetes should be able to be compiled for power? Go works on POWER no problem.

A quick google shows docker working on power too, so there really should be little to no work to run k8s on power.

fortytw2··on Reddit confirms $300M Series D led by China’s Tencent at $3B value
I also decided it's as good a time as any to rip reddit out of my daily life, after using it for the better part of the last 10 years.

Between the crushing "download our tracking riddled app" / "switch to our shitty new redesign" push recently and massive amount of engineered sponsored content, instead of paid-for advertisement, there's nothing there keeping me interested. This most recent funding round is just icing on the cake.

It's only a matter of time before they go down the twitter path and outright ban third party apps.

fortytw2··on Griping about Go
As opposed to... entire program scoped?
fortytw2··on Show HN: AskData – API to Translate Natural Language-2-Sql
OT: Something is extremely fishy with the comments in here, guess this slipped through the voting ring detector?
fortytw2··on Progressive web apps are coming to iOS 11.3: Cupertino, we have a problem
assuming "old school webview app" means something built with cordova (or similar), you no longer have the ability to drop down into Obj-C / Java for extensions/functionality that the web doesn't have or safari doesn't support.

In many cases this doesn't really matter, but could very easily be a complete dealbreaker for someone trying to decide what to build.

fortytw2··on GitHub Discover
But why is the Browse Activity tab now full of huge bolded text and gobs of whitespace? I wasn't unhappy with how it was, but this seems to strictly be worse, especially if you follow a decent number of people
fortytw2··on New in PostgreSQL 10
you can comfortably fit 8TB of data on a single box running postgres, more dependent on your hardware :)
fortytw2··on Lichess Analysis Board with Stockfish 8 in Asm.js

(maybe someone more familiar with the lichess architecture could go into a bit more depth here)

fortytw2··on Prometheus vs. Grafana vs. Graphite – A Feature Comparison
What a... confused comparison? Most prometheus deployments _use_ grafana for their visualization needs...
fortytw2··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Who pays for "free" things?
fortytw2··on Badger – A fast key-value store written natively in Go
off topic: flipping through the dgraph code, I noticed their licensing switch from Apache 2 to AGPLv3, anyone involved around to comment? Adding a draconic open source license is an unwise decision for an early stage database product imo

(https://open.dgraph.io/licensing is a dead link)

fortytw2··on CockroachDB 1.0
Did y'all ever figure out a way to get goroutine leak detection working with parallel tests? (didn't expect to see that linked here)
fortytw2··on Sourcegraph now running on an in-browser VS Code
main/out/vs sure looks like vscode artifacts, not just monaco set up all nice with a fileviewer/split panes

Super awesome to see vscode running outside electron

fortytw2··on Google Cloud SQL for Postgres
Extremely exciting, been waiting for this for a while
fortytw2··on Monzo’s Response to Cloudbleed
Caddy has less than half the performance of Nginx - not really a viable replacement at any sort of scale. https://hackernoon.com/caddy-a-modern-web-server-vs-nginx-e9...
fortytw2··on Let’s Encrypt, OAuth 2, and Kubernetes Ingress
Fair enough points :) I'll see about reworking the article, and our deployment a bit - keeping in mind that LoadBalancer services are platform dependent
fortytw2··on Let’s Encrypt, OAuth 2, and Kubernetes Ingress
So I (the author) am a bit torn on this - a `type: LoadBalancer` service will create a NodePort underneath (yet another internal loadbalancer) and map those ports to a $cloud-platform-tcp-loadbalancer. By using a DaemonSet with a host port bound, you avoid a layer of internal routing.

I'm not so sure if one approach is _particularly_ better than the other though.

fortytw2··on Let’s Encrypt, OAuth 2, and Kubernetes Ingress
For the moment at least, it's much more comfortable for us to keep our databases outside of kubernetes, so we use saltstack(masterless), packer, and terraform to manage them. We also use terraform to manage all of our DNS, which is split between Route53 and the GCP DNS service.
