fortythirteen··on Switzerland's mysterious fourth language
The majority of those lost languages are spoken only, so we lose the culture's verbal history. Imagine if nobody ever decided to write down the Iliad.
fortythirteen··on Apple Engineers Its Own Downfall with the Macbook Pro Keyboard
Get a metal base keyboard with MX browns or clears. That'll have the tactile feel, but a fraction of the sound.
fortythirteen··on Google ups its Linux Foundation membership to the $500,000/year Platinum level
You're operating off the assumption that open source foundations aren't mainly a racket themselves.
fortythirteen··on Why nobody ever wins the car at the mall
Do you use your email list to send third party promotional content?
fortythirteen··on Why nobody ever wins the car at the mall
Ultimate hypocrisy is that their profit model is probably built around reselling their email list.
fortythirteen··on When a text can trigger a lynching: WhatsApp and incendiary messages in India
The headline of your linked article is:

> 2 Dalits caned, paraded naked in Maharashtra for swimming in well of upper caste man

and you said the two were boys, so is it true that this guy caned and paraded two boys naked around the village for messing with his well? If so, I think this only confirms the foreign media's narrative.

fortythirteen··on Railway-Oriented Programming (2015)
So... try/catch?
fortythirteen··on Netflix and Alphabet will need to become ISPs, fast
Why not prosecute the telecoms under current anti-trust legislation?

I'm as troubled by the zeitgeist's two proposed solutions, more big companies or more big government, as I am by the merger.

fortythirteen··on Bitcoin’s Price Was Artificially Inflated Last Year, Researchers Say
In other news, water is wet.
fortythirteen··on The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official
Look at TechCruch's[0] weak argument against this (#4). They even have have to admit that it "potentially" does hinder competition, but claim temporary exemptions negate this. They use a single small ISP from SF (which has more resources than any other town in the world) as an example of it not being an issue.

You may not agree with either conclusion, but you must admit that it is the most weakly dismissed argument against added regulations.

fortythirteen··on The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official
Think about how many households subscribe to Netflix and/or Amazon. Imagine how John Q. Public can be persuaded to complain to his ISP when Netflix puts a big banner in the app that says "your internet provider is stopping us from streaming Thor Ragnarok in HD."
fortythirteen··on The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official
> and has no say in the matter apart from finding a new ISP

And that has nothing to do with NetNeutrality™. In fact NetNeutrality™ put in place an expensive regulatory process that often priced out small competitors.

fortythirteen··on The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official
I think that dystopian vision falls apart when you factor in porn, because that's the #1 use and no ISP is going to add a porn tier. People will flip their lid when they can't get to pornhub.
fortythirteen··on The Repeal of Net Neutrality Is Official
I'm interested in whether one of the two extreme sides of this debate will admit they were wrong when their prediction doesn't pan out.

Either we wind up with a tiered, cable package style internet or we don't. I'm in the "we won't" camp", but I'm also more disturbed by the monopolistic nature of ISP's that the regulations emboldened.

fortythirteen··on AI at Google: our principles
> We want to be clear that while we are not developing AI for use in weapons...

we will be developing AI for things that have weapons attached to them. We hope our lawyerly semantics are enough to fool you rubes for as long as it takes us to pocket that sweet military money.

fortythirteen··on Half of all adults in the world have less than $2,300 in wealth (2016)
Would you rather have <$1k in savings in America or have a decent savings in a 3rd world country? Equating income to quality of life is 1st world centric.
fortythirteen··on If wages are to rise, workers need more bargaining power
> Money is not ethnicity.

It's the metric by which you stereotype people. You're just making my point for me.

fortythirteen··on If wages are to rise, workers need more bargaining power
> people who live in extreme comfort and can afford tremendous amounts of power because of their money

You do realize that the first half of your sentence is identical to a extreme nationalist argument against an ethnic group, don't you? All you would have to do is start it off with "The [insert ethnic group] are people who live in extreme comfort..."

fortythirteen··on If wages are to rise, workers need more bargaining power
Are most of those 7m moving to Brockenhurst? No, they're piling into London, and new domiciles aren't keeping up, so prices are skyrocketing and pushing up the "national average".
fortythirteen··on If wages are to rise, workers need more bargaining power
1. Real income is adjusted for inflation.

2. Property prices have multiple other factors affecting them than just GDP. For instance, if you have a large increase in population without enough new housing to account for it, then property prices naturally go up. I think that describes 21st century Britain quite well, don't you?

3. The economic dogma of blaming all problems on the rich is no different than blaming all problems on a certain ethnic group. It's just that it's not as easy to immediately recognize it as intellectually dishonest.

fortythirteen··on If wages are to rise, workers need more bargaining power
Real pay going up 1% per year for 18 years means that it has gone up 19.61% since the year 2000. Another great example of statistics being framed to elicit a certain response.
fortythirteen··on If you’re a software engineer, where should you live to maximize your income?
And they're still way off. The only reason Detroit's number is so high is because they're counting the $1k condemned houses for sale, all over the city, that nobody wants to move into.
fortythirteen··on If you’re a software engineer, where should you live to maximize your income?
Anyone with industry knowledge can look at those median salary numbers and instantly tell that the data set is faulty.
fortythirteen··on Reddit just passed Facebook as #3 most popular website in US
> Sure you can try to drive away the toxic users, but it turns out that those toxic users are also pretty influential in non-toxic aspects.

The problem with Reddit's toxic user base is that they're only concerned with blocking bad actors on one side of a subject. They've repeatedly turned a blind eye to the open doxxing and brigading from SRS, and the complete takeover of the politics subreddit by CTR.

fortythirteen··on Show HN: Pravda for the People: We Rate Billionaires.club
> Pravda for the People

Is there a reason you're associating yourself with the propaganda arm of mass murderer, Joseph Stalin?

fortythirteen··on Everything the Government Did to WikiLeaks Is Now Done to Mainstream Reporters
Propaganda talking point.

Can you link to a single item that put a single military person in danger? Even intelligence officials couldn't when asked by congress.

fortythirteen··on Why dumb recruits cost the Army, big-time (2006)
I have comrades who have, and it's a mixed bag, like everything in life.

You're giving a prime example of how binary thinking ruins the human mind.

fortythirteen··on Everything the Government Did to WikiLeaks Is Now Done to Mainstream Reporters
> HN mods have shown a strong pro-authoritarian sentiment

SV has long leaned that way. YC's success depends on the financial support of upper echelon SV people.

It's no surprise that what is considered "too political" here usually leans anti-authoritarian. You'll never get flagged talking positively about the GDPR or large ISP market fixing (also known as NetNeutrality™). You'll just find that your comments are instantly pushed to the bottom, without any rebuttal.

fortythirteen··on Google sued for 'clandestine tracking' of UK iPhone users' browsing data
And here I was, on HN last week, getting downvoted to oblivion for mentioning that each Google embedded service is a cog in a much more nefarious machine.

It's getting like reddit around here, where the most controversial comments about SV misdoings are usually the most objective.

fortythirteen··on Big tech products are mostly useless
> Every now and again, at some huge auditorium, a senior staff member at one of the big firms based in northern California – ordinarily a man...

Absolutely irrelevant to the topic. I already ignore the hype, but I think I'll also ignore this author's hyperbole.
