fortylove··on The 'Quiet Quitting' Phenomenon
All the blue collar millennials I know work far harder than their blue collar baby boomer counterparts.
fortylove··on How should we handle an over-productive employee?
SDEIII at Amazon is 100% expected to lead other engineers at Amazon, including on defining and delivery complex cross org projects.
fortylove··on Ask HN: Anyone having issues with job applicant fraud?
Could he have been traveling during the interview? I very legitimately once took a virtual interview while on a trip.
fortylove··on Apple expands Self Service Repair to Mac notebooks
Yes, this. I have two kids and am always juggling different things. I have dry hands that are crusted from manual labor. They don't have the same kind of grip that they used to have. Between those two factors, I drop my phone at least once a week.
fortylove··on What Is JSON Patch?
What if you want to delete one attribute, and update another, within the same request? Seems like utilizing HTTP DELETE would not work well for this, unless you can specify it at the attribute level, leading you back towards something like JSON Patch.
fortylove··on Silicon Valley’s supposed obsession with tech-free private schools (2019)
We're taking a different approach, where we teach limits on tech. TV is not inherently bad if the right content is played for the right amount of time. Phones are not inherently bad if used for the right activity for the right amount of time. Evening gaming is not inherently bad, if used for the right amount of time.

Yeah, we don't want to raise a phone zombie. But I believe you can do that without totally shielding them from tech.

edit: a word

fortylove··on Justice Department Issues Web Accessibility Guidance Under the ADA
Thanks for your perspective here. Surprised at the pushback as well, on HN of all places.
fortylove··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
To be fair though, a missile on your house isn't exactly the only threat in the model right now in Ukraine.
fortylove··on Ask HN: How can I prepare for hard economic times?
I mean, it might be useful in Ukraine right now.
fortylove··on Google mandates workers back to Silicon Valley, other offices from April 4
This resonates a lot with me.
fortylove··on The Radical Woman Behind “Goodnight Moon”
Sure. As a child, I was very afraid of the dark. The last thing I want to think about before going to bed are unknown "noises everywhere", that'll make my ears perk up to listen for mysterious noises. Reading this book to my daughter brought back these vivid and mostly unpleasant memories.

I understand it won't be like this for everyone, of course. And at the same time, I don't understand the appeal. So to me, it's not a great book all around.

fortylove··on The Radical Woman Behind “Goodnight Moon”
I agree. Specifically, it's nonsensical and not in a good way. Yes, it's silly. But it's also a bit triggering for children with fears of the dark, with the line "goodnight noises everywhere".
fortylove··on JRE Missing (Rogan episodes removed by Spotify)
Can we not crowdfund an NFT to save these removed episodes?
fortylove··on Amazon Pip Horror Story
Such a system is also likely to be abused, is it not?
fortylove··on There’s No Such Thing as Clean Code
Is that view not subjective though? Might someone think that if/else is simpler?
fortylove··on A tour to my Zettelkasten note clusters
Power to the OP, but does anyone else find this knowledge mapping exercise mildly depressing, especially as it pertains to notes about friendships? I can’t quite find the words to describe how I feel about it, but I don’t particularly like the idea of reducing all my thoughts and emotions into text and links between texts. Maybe forcing text makes me aware of details more consciously, but I feel like it might reduce the rawness of life, reducing the resolution to fit into text space. When in reality, maybe the raw emotions are more human? Again, not really sure how to describe my feelings here. Am I alone with this view?
fortylove··on Google says iMessage is too powerful
LOL Google is pontificating on a messenger app, of all things? Google, I'm not sure you're qualified to have an opinion on this topic, given your historical failures in this space :)
fortylove··on Launch HN: Homestead (YC W20) – Lot-splitting to build new housing supply
I'm assuming for future construction, you'd have to treat each lot as separate with regards to setbacks from the property lines. So no building a house that straddles the old property line, I suppose
fortylove··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
Yes, this is completely not okay.
fortylove··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
What the fudge. It has the health plan info for me, my wife, and my daughter on the report? This is not okay.
fortylove··on Internet Movie Firearms Database
Ah, this is so cool! I was wondering about the Toyota SUV that Bond drives in No Time To Die. Found it easily with this site!

fortylove··on Reddit files to go public
The page loads ending in failure has not been my experience at all. Search is not great though, agreed.
fortylove··on Reflections on E-Bikes
>Bullitt bakfiet with multiple air conditioners in the front "box"

Isn't that a festool vacuum (like a shopvac), with festool tool boxes on top?

fortylove··on Zillow to stop flipping homes, loses more than $550M, lays off 25% of staff
Were these mostly SDEs? If any Zillow employee is reading this: best of luck! This must be hard to go through.
fortylove··on Ask HN: What you up to? (Who doesn't want to be hired?)
Amazing! Being a dad is the best thing that's happened in my life. I hope it's the same experience for you.
fortylove··on Programmers’ emotions
Woodworking. That's the dream.
fortylove··on Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely
Thanks!
fortylove··on Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely
If you don't mind me asking, which state is this in? It sounds intriguing.
fortylove··on Amazon will allow many employees to work remotely indefinitely
I thoroughly enjoyed this whole sub thread.
fortylove··on In software, when an engineer exits the team
Anecdotally, most developers I've seen leave companies over the past 10 years have left for money reasons.

I use to assume it varied by the company, but it doesn't seem to. Invariably, shifting companies seems to be the way to get more money.
