fortran77··on Thanks FedEx, This Is Why We Keep Getting Phished (2024)
My mom used to know what to do, but with dementia, she lost that ability. We now have a call block on her landline, so only a small whitelist can get through.
fortran77··on Thanks FedEx, This Is Why We Keep Getting Phished (2024)
When I lived in Sunnyvale, CA, I got text that said "Renew your alarm license online at my-alarm-license-renew.info"

You do need a residential alarm license in Sunnyvale, but I was sure this was a scam. I called the city. It was the real address, and they were mystified as to why I'd call them. (I sent in a check to avoid the $1.50 processing fee, but that was before 50% of checks get stolen in the mail.)

fortran77··on AI-Generated Images Discourage Me from Reading Your Blog
If you use images on your blog, even if you are scrupulous about sourcing them, purchase licenses, or go by the same low-resolution "fair use" rules that Wikipedia does, you will get several letters a year from law firms claiming they represent a client who owns the right to that photo.

Rather than wasting time sorting all these out when the images are there mostly to break up a wall of text, some blogs simply use a few AI images. This way if those letters come, they can simply put them in the bin.

I don't object to this use of AI images at all.

fortran77··on Plug-in solar is coming. Plug-in batteries should follow
When we got our solar system in CA, our electric bill went to zero. We calculated the payback to be 9 years. Eventually, they stopped buying back electricity and changed the way they metered and our bill was as high as ever. We save a bit because we're able to charge our electric car at times of peak PV output.

We left California last year for this and many other reasons. They just don't want anyone to be productive here.

fortran77··on IMAX vs. IMAX 70mm: The difference between these two cinema formats
IMAX really cheapened their brand with the LIEMax format. Most "IMAX" are actually LIEMax, projecting a 4K image and not even with the extra tall IMAX aspect ratio.

fortran77··on What would it mean to see a new color?
I have a taste of this when I got IOLs last month (cataract surgery). I now see colors I haven't seen in years. And I suspect that the IOL passes more blue light than my natural lens ever did, even when I was young.

We shouldn't rely on selective, "practical" enforcement of the law though.
fortran77··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
> I still don’t want to throw kids in prison or remove all traces of a right to privacy in our haste to sun-yeet them.

The one messy corner of this is the "strict liability" for this type of material. An underage kid can take a nude photo, send it to an adult, and then the adult can criminally liable for just having it, even if he deleted it as soon as he saw it. Either both parties involved in handing something for which there is "strict liability' need to be held accountable, or "strict liability" has to be changed so a person isn't liable if he deletes or reports the material as soon as he first becomes aware of it. And this isn't likely to happen because it would provide a plausible defense for every one criminally charged.

fortran77··on Apple defeats liability for not scanning iCloud for CSAM
The practical problem is, without a threshold, they'd have an order of magnitude more false positives than 'real' detections, making the system useless.

fortran77··on EEG shows brain can simultaneous encode two speech streams
I do a form of this all the time and I've always wondered "how." I can copy Morse Code--hearing the code and writing it down--while carrying on a conversation with someone else. I'm only "encoding" it, in that I have to read it to know what I just copied. The process of hearing a letter or word in Morse and moving my hand to write it has become so automatic that I can do it while having a live conversation with someone in the room.

It would be interesting to know what's going on in my head with an EEG or FMRI...
