fortran77··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
When I was in grade school in the 60s (I'm old) they showed us this film:

For some reason, the lessons learned stuck with me.

fortran77··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
When I took the two day Disney "Walk in Walt's Footsteps" executive employee training 25+ years ago, the training that takes you to his secret apartment above the firehouse, and makes you spend an afternoon as a costumed (minor) character, at the end the woman leading us said "Ok! Now it's time for all of you to kiss Walt's frozen head."

Fortunately, she was kidding.

fortran77··on America's Driver's License Breach Is a National Security Disaster
But they were! My college student ID from 1980 has my SS number right on it. I have here an employee badge from the Walt Disney Company from 2000 and my SS number is in a bar code right on the bottom. Even in 2000, it would be trivial to take a photo of someone wearing the ID badge and decode the 1D bar code on it.

I think so. I subscribe, but this was a "gift link". You may have to play along, allow JavaScript, etc, for it to work.

Yes, a person who is unbanked wouldn't need or be able to use this product, as well as 90% of any other product talked about on Hacker News, or in the Wall Street Journal, or in the New York Times. Does every piece need a statement lamenting the plight of the unbanked?

fortran77··on Show HN: Is this photo edited? Client-side image forensics
I dropped an image that was color corrected with AI, but otherwise a proper image of myself. I use my own face because it's very easy to see if AI has altered it in a subtle way when dealing with a very familiar subject.

It found the "AI Generated" signature embedded in it by the creator (whatever image model Perplexity decided to use.)

But I wouldn't have called this image AI. So images that have merely been color corrected or other very minor changes may come up as "AI Generated" even if they're essentially real images.

This is The Atlantic. A very long-established magazine.
fortran77··on HP ZGX Fury Is Now Orderable: GB300 Superchip, 748GB Unified Memory
Since I'm a "retro computing" guy, I look forward to buying one of these on eBay or at a Vintage Computing Fair for a few hundred bucks 5 years from now.
fortran77··on HP ZGX Fury Is Now Orderable: GB300 Superchip, 748GB Unified Memory
I have a $50,000 Tektronix 'scope on my bench that's Secured with a kensington lock. I am in a small office in a building I own and I rent out some extra space to another 3 person engineering company. One weekend they tried to remove my 'scope from the bench because they had something "important" to work on. They quickly discovered the lock. (The whole thing was caught on camera.)

They weren't trying to steal it, they just wanted to bring it over to their side. But the lock did its job! This is the perfect situation for a Kensington lock.

I yelled at them the next day telling them if they need a Series 5 'scope they could go rent or buy one.

I have found that "trivial" UI stuff is the hardest for AI to get right.

You're right! It is odd that someone who makes electrical storage and electrical cars would be interested in solar PV, too.
