forinti··on 'AI refuser' quit her dream job, and hopes others follow
In the case of the US, 1929 and WWII bought significant changes. Then Reagan started the path back to the XIX century.
forinti··on 'Ghost job' ads are getting so bad that lawmakers want to ban them
That would be securities fraud.
forinti··on How to compromise your system with a job interview
> “A relevant opportunity” with part-time remote work and a great hourly compensation

That is so suspicious at the moment.

forinti··on UK internet age checks have boosted rogue adult sites, says Pornhub
That's one (very serious issue) but there are many others.

Pornhub is a company, has an address, pays taxes, and has a history of problems.

Which site would you qualify as a "good" actor?

It's an honest question. Is there such a thing as ethical porn or are there only sites that pay taxes and those that don't?

forinti··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
There's a mall near my house that has a food hall that has become an informal co-working space. At one point, the coffee shop had a coffee day pass.

Before my team got a back to office order we had weekly meetings there.

Considering how malls are suffering I don't understand why they are not offering more options like this.

forinti··on The Amazon tax
As awful as Amazon has become, I still use it for the same reason I started using it many years ago: books.

It's the one place I can find all the books my kids need for school. You search with an ISBN and always find exactly what you want.

Other things I buy elsewhere.

forinti··on The Amazon tax
That's just not going to happen. You have to go out in the rain or heat, pay for parking, maybe not find what you want, pay 30% more than online, so online still has advantages.

What baffles me is that e-commerce sites all tend to get worse with time. The moment a site I like turns into a marketplace, I know it will only go downhill.

forinti··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months, up to 10x the lowest ever tracked prices
I've seen computers brought back to life after flooding by lying in rice for a week, but they weren't turned on when the water hit (and not all survived).

You didn't hold on to your Pentium 4 long enough. :-)
forinti··on Memory prices climb 500% in 12 months
I've been using computers for more than 40 years now and the one component I have never seen fail is RAM.

All the other bits in a computer I've seen fail.

forinti··on Turbo Pascal on CP/M, MSX-DOS and MS-DOS
I just looked up the price for Acornsoft ISO Pascal in 1989 and found a listing with 69 pounds, which would be 188 2026 pounds or 220 euros. It consists of 2 16KB ROMs (and a floppy version).
forinti··on AI agents lie, cheat and steal. That is putting off users
I'm pretty sure this is not the first time we've created a god in our own image.
forinti··on The punched card tabulator
I used punched cards in a university entrance exam in 1991. We would poke holes to mark the answers. They were identical to the IBM cards in shape and size but there were perforation lines to help you punch out the answers with a pencil. It was precarious and you could easily damage it.

Somebody told me the tabulating machine sometimes munched up a card.

> During a short stint compiling manufacturing statistics for the US Census Office, Herman Hollerith grew frustrated with the organization’s manual process of counting questionnaires.

Go out to the world and do something, however boring it may seem. You've got more chances of having a bright ideia than if you stay home just thinking.

forinti··on Because It's Not Fun Enough: why languages fail
Perl is still in every Linux. I just checked one of my Oracle installs and there are 725 .pl files.

So it seems that is it still relevant.

forinti··on A physicist rigged his pet hamster’s wheel to upload to Strava
When I had cats, I couldn't leave the bedroom door wide open, because that would give them space to come running into the room and jump onto the bed (sometimes on my face) at early hours.
forinti··on Civilians under siege by Mexican cartel fight back with AK-47s, grenades
A characteristic of most of Latin America is that the Police and the Army were created to protect power, not the people, and there hasn't really been an effort to change the mentality.

forinti··on Autoregressive Language Model on the 6502 Processor
You could buy a board called Integra-B to expand a model B.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lT07uPRRPfU

A few games required some extra RAM.

Update: Actually, there were other boards. I remember one particular advert for a board that could handle 256KB of RAM/ROM. I'm now actually curious if adding too many ROMs would make the * commands noticeably slower (the OS would look for the commands in the ROMs, one by one, until it found the code to handle them).

forinti··on Twenty Years of RISC OS Open
It's impressive how fast it boots up on a Pi. I've tried all the OSs for the Pi and RISCOS is way faster than all the alternatives.
forinti··on Memo-1: A 6502 computer built from scratch, using a Minitel as its terminal
I was looking for info about connecting a Beeb to a Linux machine as a terminal, and found this guy using a modem for this:

I'm going with a RS423 to USB cable.

forinti··on Why don't people use formal methods? (2019)
I think programmers in general do not give much thought to the level of engineering required for a task.

Mostly, there's too little, but there are many cases when there's too much. I see people writing tons of tests for corporate software that will be used by a couple of people and will have to be updated regularly anyway.

Building a hut is not the same as building a skyscraper, but we don't really have guidelines for different software projects. No methodology I've ever seen distinguishes types of projects by complexity.

Some words also came into Portuguese from African slaves who were Muslim.

And also from the Lebanese who immigrated to Brazil in the XX century.

forinti··on The only road in London where you have to drive on the right
Sometimes, rarely, you find a bit asphalt in Brazil where you have to drive on the left and often it is signalled as "mão inglesa", which is something like "English flow".

Recently I discussed with some friends the relative merits of LHT and RHT, and we came to the conclusion that LFT was better because you could drive and shoot with your right hand. So LHT is great for drive-by-shootings. Curiously, no alcohol was ingested during this conversation.

forinti··on Why a $154B CEO just endorsed stripping most Americans of voting rights
Voting should always be universal. The moment you exclude someone, you add the possibility of excluding more people.
forinti··on Future euro banknote design proposals
I agree. There's one Da Vinci with the Vitruvian man on the back. The back should complement the front, right?
