forgotmypw··on SSL-certificates issued by Cloudflare are not revokable
The money quote, after several pages of did-you-try-submitting-a-ticket and no-the-other-ticket-system-via-the-help-pages:

> Sorry for the inconvenience here, currently we do not have the ability to revoke the free Universal SSL certificates, however, after disabling Universal SSL, the certificates are removed from our edge. If you enable it again, new certificates are issued, since we do not have those old certificates anymore.

> However, depending on the issuer you may be able to request their revocation directly with the CA:

Thank you, all great ideas!
forgotmypw··on The Future of RTS
Though I've never served in armed forces, nor participated in armed conflict, I think C&C does a pretty good approximation of being an (overwhelmed) officer in command of a small area conflict, where you do have to give exact orders to everyone for every little thing.

I think a huge improvement to RTS in general would be allowing multiple players to command the same army, so that each can be responsible for a small portion of all the different tasks you describe.

forgotmypw··on Show HN: Browse the (old) web with emulated browsers running in your browser
This is great, thanks for sharing!

The web is amazing in its level of backwards compatibility, in that you can make a website compatible with all of these browsers from the 90s today!

Retro-computing growth is exploding based on what I see here and on Facebook, and it could be the key to saving the Web's openness.

I'm working on a project which allows for easily building hybrid static-dynamic sites compatible with Mosaic+, and I am grateful to others working to preserve this technology.

Thanks again!

This is how it seems to me too. I still have their hardware I got years ago and it works great, but it's been a couple of years since I've decided to refuse any software upgrades from them, and to avoid their hardware. Their attitude seems to be getting more and more "our way or the highway", and I'm not interested in playing those games.

Previously I already switched from Windows to Mac as my primary environment, so going to GNU/*ix was not a big stretch. I already know several non-hackers who have gone this route as well.

forgotmypw··on Google Phases Out Android Things
It's funny how 7 seems to be the magic number with peak quality and usefulness in commercial OS development before it devolves into bloat and user abuse.

Android 7 was the last version before crazy restrictions like blocking screenshots for Incognito Mode started taking effect.

Windows 7 was the last decent version of Windows before it went downhill with 8 and then going full-on spyware-as-a-service with 10.

System 7 was the last release of MacOS before it started bloating.

OS X Lion (10.7) was the last release before Gatekeeper.

Any others I'm missing?

forgotmypw··on Ask HN: Is it realistic to make a good living as a sole software developer
With LT and LW specifically, that somehow was developing something they themselves were looking for, dogfooding the heck out of it, and perservering for many years before it began to pay off.
forgotmypw··on Ask HN: Is it realistic to make a good living as a sole software developer
My advice to you, as someone with 20+ years in the industry:

Look at each job as a college course or internship you also happen to get paid for. Try to learn something new at your job every day. If you go several weeks without learning anything new, start looking for another job. Even if you're only a few months into your current one, doesn't matter. The job market is great, and you can spin it in a positive way. I've been asked about it in interviews, and my answer is that I work hard to make a positive impact every day I work somewhere, and to ensure that even if I work somewhere just one day, they are glad to have hired me.

While you're doing this, start looking for a problem that you want to solve. This is typically born out of your own pain point, or someone close to you. Start working on it, and looking for a way to solve it in a way that is beneficial to you. Typically, this means providing support for your software in return for something else, either money or barter.

Do not allow yourself to invest emotionally into your money work, because, as you have seen above, it is disappointing. Remember the college course strategy above, and don't allow yourself to be upset by work bullshit.

While you're doing all this, minimize your lifestyle expenses and save your money. This will provide you with runway when you're ready to lift off your startup, while at the same time extending the length of runway each dollar provides.

Good luck! Based on how you described yourself, I believe without a doubt you have what it takes to achieve happiness in this field.

BTW, I noticed your other post about textfile-driven development, and I am working on just such a project. I use SQLite for an accessible index, but I insist on human-readable text for both config and data for the base. You can learn more about it via my profile.

forgotmypw··on Salmon spawning in the upper Columbia River, first in 80 years
People say this about many beings, and even about other humans. What they all have in common is a lack of exposure to those they denigrate and reduce in their mind to dumb automatons. I don't think you are smart to say that about anyone you haven't spent much time around or bonded with in any significant way.
forgotmypw··on Salmon spawning in the upper Columbia River, first in 80 years
We are biological creatures, and part of the biome.

All of the artificial things we've created do nothing to sustain our existence, only to facilitate our connection with the biome.

If, in the process of facilitating this connection, we eliminate the biome's ability to sustain itself, most of us will be dead very quickly.

That's one of the reasons people care so much.

Another reason, if you suspend your human-centric worldview, is seeing other creatures as our relatives on the biological tree of live, admitting their ability to have feelings and desires and suffering, and caring for their plight and happiness alongside ours.

We don't have to kill the biome to sustain ourselves. In fact, the opposite is true.

forgotmypw··on Ask HN: What is the most underrated skill software engineers should learn?
Yep. Desktop keyboard were designed for typing. Laptop keyboards were designed to fit inside a laptop.
forgotmypw··on Ask HN: What mobile browser do you use?
On Android:

Firefox Focus for WiFi portals

Firefox for general web browsing

Chrome for Google services and such

On iOS:

Safari for general no-JS browsing

Opera, iCab, Chrome -- for browsing stuff with JS (I alternate)

This is why I lug around a standard keyboard to go with my laptop. I know exactly where the keys are, including directional and navigation.

The touchbar is useless, but the whole keyboard is about as useful as any other laptop keyboard out there. They all fucking suck terribly.

I've given up on the lot of them, and I now carry around a standard-layout 104-key keyboard with me wherever I carry the laptop.

It's not that bulky, and I'm way more productive on the standard layout I've used for two decades compared to whatever moronic, or even intelligent compromise some committee of designers came up with to squeeze it down to 2/3 of its original size.

Still requires JS. I'll stick with nitter.net, which doesn't even require a login.
