forgotmypw··on Some ISPs offer YouTube/Netflix/Facebook for free. How do they monitor that?
>Youtube has like a ton of them and they probably change from time to time.

While that's true, it is not that many IPs, and they do not change that much.

Maintaining a list of IPs for YouTube, Netflix, and other mainstream services is probably a couple hours of work per week at most, probably distributed between multiple people in whatever department handles it.

forgotmypw··on Some ISPs offer YouTube/Netflix/Facebook for free. How do they monitor that?
It should be enough to look at the IP address.
forgotmypw··on Ask HN: Solo devs, how do you plan your development?
It does grow quite a bit. Sometimes I go through the whole file and take out things which I've finished. I haven't found this to be much of a problem.
forgotmypw··on Ask HN: Solo devs, how do you plan your development?
I have a file called todo.txt, with the current tasks at the top, and everything else below that. It is in version control.

As I finish stuff, I delete it out of the file.

I add new stuff towards the top if I want to do it soon, towards the bottom if I want to save it for later.

For things which are just ideas, I have a second file called brainstorm.txt.

forgotmypw··on In New York, Making Ends Meet on a 5-Cent Recycling Deposit
Fun fact: Poland Spring bottles can be returned for a 5-cent deposit, unless they have a thin red line on the label, in which case they are worthless to deposit collectors, and just end up in the trash. (The red line is an indicator that the bottle came from a 24-pack.)

If Facebook, Instagram, etc. app is installed on the phone, the settings won't help much.
forgotmypw··on BSD vs. Ubuntu motd(5)
>Also if you're in the position to care about motd, you're going to have the skill to change it yourself.

This is an elitist view which implies that if someone doesn't understand something, they aren't affected by it.

Sadly, this trap is designed quite well, while warnings about it are not designed nearly as well, and many fall into it for n years.

What is so horrible about awkwardness?

I've witnessed people talk about it like it's the plague.

It's just a bit of discomfort, and then you move on.

If you just want to know the truth, not "prove" it "globally" in a "study", which essentially amounts to proving to the wolf that he is dangerous to the sheep, all you need to do is look at the ingredients list.

For extra credit, look the ingredients up and see how many of them have above-zero blue hazmat ratings.

forgotmypw··on Internet Mail 2000
This reminds me of that text with checkboxes, which starts something like this:

You are attempting to address the spam problem with the use of [ ] law [ ] technology [ ] and so on

Anyone know what I'm talking about?

forgotmypw··on Stab a Book, the Book Won't Die
I'm not sure how you can rule out reading burning calories. Our brains burn more calories than the rest of our bodies, and taxing a brain more oughta burn more.
forgotmypw··on Stab a Book, the Book Won't Die
Free will does exist, but it's quite overrated at the moment, IMO. It is a limited resource that runs out, and most of our lives are lived by habit, which you can change a little bit at a time.

How to Become the Best in the World at Something With skill stacking, you don’t need to be at the top to be extraordinary Tomas Pueyo Oct 17 · 7 min read

It’s better to have three okay tools than a single, perfect one. The axe is great at breaking obstacles, but not that useful to jump over pits. The grapple is great to jump over ice or pits, but not amazing for slaying dragons. The only way to win is by having both tools. Illustrations: Tomas Pueyo.

forgotmypw··on What men eat and drink may affect their babies’ health
Maybe olive oil, without doing much research, might be an exception where it is not harmful, as long as you know where it is coming from and has not been adulterated or diluted.

One of the problem with processed food is that it allows large quantities, which often means lower quality. Also, you don't see what it's actually being made of.

For example, in the olives article, it cited an instance of sub-standard, damaged olives being used to make olive oil

>So it does include flour and pasta?

Yes, it does.

>Edit: olive oil and butter would also seem to fit the bill.

Indeed they would, unless you're making them yourself, or at least have an inkling of how, where, and by whom they were made.
