forgotmyinfo··on Honey bees at risk for colony collapse from longer, warmer fall seasons
Yeah, they should've consulted Hacker News first before doing this study.
forgotmyinfo··on You can't leak users' data if you don't hold it
What happens when Matter gets acquired? I'm sorry, but all this self back-patting is a bit too little too late for this jaded guy, especially because a thousand other companies have made the same promises in cheery blog posts, before something happens and my social security number winds up on a sticky note on some hacker's monitor in Belarus. Hell, I've worked for companies where I was forced to break users' trust because some executive critter told me to when it was clear the profit faucet wasn't opened nearly enough.

So thanks, but this isn't enough anymore. We need laws that will guarantee that every company that handles our data will do it thoughtfully and safely. In the meantime, I'm not expecting much.

forgotmyinfo··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison
If it isn't obvious already that cryptocurrency is one giant grift, then I don't know how many more stories are going to help. The SEC or Congress or someone with power needs to just make it illegal, or else this kind of thing will keep happening. It happened before we got our shit together in the early 20th century, but we collectively realized markets were actively doing shady things, and then we legislated to fix things. Will we do it again?
forgotmyinfo··on What Boeing did to all the guys who remember how to build a plane
Y'all're gonna hate this, but financialization and the relentless pursuit of profits. Every time this stuff happens, people ask why, and it's because of greed. When you focus on making money above all else, this is what happens. It's not a mystery.
forgotmyinfo··on Recent 'MFA Bombing' Attacks Targeting Apple Users
You're telling me Facebook, with its billions of dollars and leetcode interviews, can't figure this out? That is outside the realm of computable functions?
forgotmyinfo··on Recent 'MFA Bombing' Attacks Targeting Apple Users
Your own company could've sold it to data brokers. Look into Equifax's Work Number score, it includes fun things like where you worked and how much you made. But no, let's not unionize or anything.
forgotmyinfo··on Recent 'MFA Bombing' Attacks Targeting Apple Users
It's distressing and sad that we've come to expect so little from the trillion-dollar market cap companies to which we are beholden to participate in modernity.
forgotmyinfo··on Show HN: A static site generator that prettifies the output HTML
Gzip exists, and text compresses pretty well. Unless it's 20 MB of JavaScript just to render some text, that you're best just removing.
forgotmyinfo··on Show HN: A static site generator that prettifies the output HTML
Fads and lack of education? HTML is better than ever, and authoring it isn't that bad. I do it for my own personal site, and I haven't keeled over yet. It's still allowed!
forgotmyinfo··on Show HN: Budget Kanban – Visually manage finances in Kanban boards
That's because lots of banking is still fairly manual, and clearing takes 2-3 days in the United States. FedNow should help, but ACH still reigns, and transactions still take time. Ask Congress and the banks why things are still so slow.
forgotmyinfo··on The Pentagon's Silicon Valley Problem
This is what we have attorneys and judges for. And no, obviously Thanksgiving isn't "hanging out". But going to the same weekly meeting and practicing lynching minorities? Yeah, that's a little more than just mashed potatoes and gravy, isn't it. (These contrived "whatabout" gotchas are exhausting. It is abundantly obvious who is and who is not involved with white nationalist militias.)
forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
Then there's probably a reason, like the changes haven't been tested yet or verified to make sure they don't FUBAR your machine. It's okay to go a little slower to ensure reliability. Plus, do you really want the latest bugs in HEAD anyway?
forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
In the same way a zip file is static linking, I guess, since Docker images are just tarred gzips. But .deb packages can include files and scripts that create directories, too.
forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
The benefit of waiting for maintainers to update your software is that you have a stronger guarantee that it won't break your system, or otherwise fubar something. Maintainers are the adults in the room saying "no, fix your shit" when sloppy developers release crap, which seems to be happening more and more frequently lately.

As for where configuration and data live, that's always available in the docs, and Linux convention puts stuff in /etc, so I'm not sure how containers help. And dynamic libraries are in a well-defined location, with environment variables and other tools that allow you to specify where they live. It's not like dynamic linking is an unsolved problem.

forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
Debugging Docker-anything makes me want to go into drywall, I swear.
forgotmyinfo··on Fewer U.S. scientists are pursuing postdoc positions, new data show
Not everybody can work at the same washed-up Silicon Valley panopticon providers, you know. Some people need to be, like, accountants and stuff.
forgotmyinfo··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
Probably! It's just unfortunate that we don't have any sort of New Deal, good jazz clubs, or Art Deco to make it suck less.
forgotmyinfo··on Are We Living in the Roaring 20s?
Agreed. It's hard to confront the fact that your sweet, old neighbor lady across the street shows up to screech at city council meetings every week because someone wants to build an apartment building. Multiply this times 40 million, and you get our current predicament.

I have seen people go to truly insane lengths to prevent buildings from going up in prosperous downtown cores in middle America. But what do you expect? Everyone wants housing to be an investment, and for it to appreciate, the supply has to go down. Eventually, something has to give, and it's going to be ugly.

forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
I can't speak for anyone else, but I definitely feel like there's no time to actually learn about all of these tools before being thrown into them by management/other well-meaning ICs. The end result is everyone is using a tool they know nothing about, with predictable results.
forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
Grab a developer off the street and ask them how Docker works. Most of them will have no idea.
forgotmyinfo··on DOJ compares AAPL share buybacks with R&D as 'evidence' of lack of competition
It makes people uncomfortable to think that maybe massive, powerful companies do bad things, especially if they are either employed by one or hope to start one of their own. It's not fun being on the other side of the wealth divide in this country, and people will fight tooth and nail to prevent it from happening to themselves and their families. Unfortunately, the more precarious life gets, the harder people will fight. It's not looking good out there.
forgotmyinfo··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
Sleep studies exist, and they're fairly advanced, is my understanding. For most people, though, it'll be possibly difficult lifestyle changes, like reducing light in the room, better bedding, less noise, not sleeping with a partner, winding down before bed without screens (big one), better diet, etc. The solutions are there, they're just unpalatable, like everything else you should do that's good for you.
forgotmyinfo··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
I've never seen a more zombified human being than when a friend had a fussy baby who simply would not sleep. Two hours a night was her and her husband's norm, sometimes. Godspeed, I hope you can get some rest soon. (Also, congratulations on the new baby! :))
forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
This is basically dynamic linking: you have foo.so sitting somewhere on disk, and multiple processes can just load it whenever. It can't be read-only, though; you need to add new libraries to that directory eventually.
forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
Docker punches holes in it:

>By default, all external source IPs are allowed to connect to the Docker host. To allow only a specific IP or network to access the containers, insert a negated rule at the top of the DOCKER-USER filter chain.

Yikes. Should people read the docs? Yes. Should Docker not do this? Also yes.

forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
Someone did once joke that Docker is just static linking for millennials. I chuckle because there's a kernel of truth in there. ;)
forgotmyinfo··on The What, Why and How of Containers
Filesystems solve linking insofar as the libraries themselves are on disk; otherwise, this is squarely the responsibility of the loader.

Never underestimate the security and safety of a hidden piece of paper! If it's good enough for wills for the last 500 years, it's good enough for a password.

Honestly, that would probably fuck me up for a little while, knowing I was less than a minute away from probably being dead. I hope they're okay, mentally.
forgotmyinfo··on A living replacement knee to be tested in clinical trials within five years
My mom is also overweight and having the resultant joint issues because of it now that it's been decades. I feel bad, because it just results in pain, which makes her move less, and it just becomes a vicious cycle. Some things provide temporary relief, like steroid injections, but the core issue is still there.

Never stop moving, if you can help it! Mobility is so important.
