forgetsusername··on Volkswagen overtakes Toyota as the world's biggest carmaker
>What would that gain you? Wouldnt the same capital holders pool their wealth into a newly minted corporation to continue exploiting the resources they have accrued?

And the small-timers, with their meagre holdings and pension funds would be wiped out.

Corporations aren't monolithic; they are a collection of people working for and owning stake in. Their dissolution wouldn't be small and contained, it would be large and messy.

>Interesting (and probably appropriate) that the market is pricing

I'd be cautious in considering the valuation at last funding round to be "the market".

forgetsusername··on Seattle Is Opening First in U.S. “Safe Injection Facility” for Heroin Addicts
>To say heroin and alcohol/tobacco are equivalent would be stupid.

It doesn't sound like you have any experience with drugs or medicine outside of what you learned in D.A.R.E.

forgetsusername··on Sergey Brin joins protest against immigration order at SFO
>If these people are going to brigade every post about this topic with the same hollow rhetoric

I think the "these people" rhetoric you use is worse.

The same people who would be enraged at the usage of the term if it was in regards to, say, Muslims, are more than happy to use the term referring to Trump supporters.

"These people" don't exist.

>There is no policy proposal that could even theoretically offset the damage he is doing. Among those he has actually proposed, I'm having trouble of finding a single issue that could reasonably be considered "not evil"

Everything Trumps's doing is so evil that the damage, after one week, is already insurmountable?

This is quite the exaggeration, and it's precisely why the left isn't going to be able to move the needle with Trump voters: the left assumes everyone on the "other side" is a racist, sexist, ignoramus.

forgetsusername··on Airbnb is providing free housing to refugees and anyone not allowed in the US
>You select the disaster first and then offer your housing, which means the hosts are informed about their potential guests.

Yes, you do. What is AirBnB's role besides providing the platform?

forgetsusername··on Airbnb is providing free housing to refugees and anyone not allowed in the US
>Airbnb should run a promotion for free nights at hosts who live within a mile of a Trump property.

How much longer do you think AirBnB's regulation flouting would last if they went to war with the President?

forgetsusername··on Microsoft earnings blow past estimates in every category, beats Street
>Makes me wonder what a "hacker" portfolio might look like

Lots of concentration and no voting rights.

forgetsusername··on Libor: the bankers who fixed the world’s most important number
>Thus he was thrown under the bus to deflect attention

Why is it so hard to imagine someone doing this without direct order? Why do we assume the "executive" is evil, but the lowly worker is "good"?

forgetsusername··on Libor: the bankers who fixed the world’s most important number
>yet the executives from many of those banks that caused the crisis left with multi-million dollar bonuses and zero jail time.

Can you point to the actual crimes or specific cases? Because, fortunately, we don't throw people in jail on speculation.

>I personally found this comment to be interesting and relevant.

You find off-topic strawman arguments constructed against "people like the author" interesting and relevant?

forgetsusername··on Vegetarian diets are not going to save the planet
>I suggest not waste your time on it.

I don't understand this. Why not?

You recommend a documentary with opposing views instead; should we only read and watch things that we agree with?

>Whoever lives in a cosmopolitan city knows this is not true, or not anymore.

Vegetarians compose about 3% of the population. I'd say that's a "margin group". If you live in a coastal city in the US, vegetarians may be over-represented.

>It is that supermarkets choose to put the "high price" on produce all year long, except for a discount crop maybe. This is because produce does not pull customers.

Blatantly false where I live. Produce is substantially cheaper all summer and into the fall than it is in the winter when we have to import vegetables from around the world.

forgetsusername··on Why I will never have a girlfriend (1999)
>It just happens that most women are not that physically attractive

This is a pretty bold assertion. On what do you base it?

Seems to me that the average woman is average looking.

forgetsusername··on Why I will never have a girlfriend (1999)
>but the different genders operate differently

I agree. Add to that list different cultures, societies, levels of wealth, occupations, upbringing, personality quirks, fetishes, randomness...

The expectation of finding someone who "operates" like you is tough to meet.

forgetsusername··on Dow Hits 20000 for First Time
Bingo. So many macroeconomic prognostications in this thread, none of which will be correct. The fact that "smart hedge fund" guys are making stupid bets on a market crash is hilarious.

Put money in diverse holdings and let it compound. It's not hard.

forgetsusername··on Dow Hits 20000 for First Time
>All in all, I'd like to hear what others think

I think that "command and control" and "free market" economies are the extremes of the spectrum, neither optimal, with lots of room in between.

Trump has talked a lot, but we don't know where he will actually fall, policy-wise. It's not out of the question he implements economically beneficial policies. We should judge what he does, not what he says.

forgetsusername··on Dow Hits 20000 for First Time
>I wish that we could just drop the Dow entirely and focus on the more modern indices like the S&P.

I don't get it. Is someone forcing "us" to use the DOW in some manner? It is what it is, use the information how you choose.

This reminds me of people who complain about how the BLS calculates specific measures of inflation or unemployment. They list their methodology. Either you find the information important and useful, or you can choose to ignore it. We don't have to "drop" anything.

forgetsusername··on Doomsday Prep for the Super-Rich
>Thanks for letting me know you have cool firearms, ammunition, and god knows what else.

I'm pretty sure many of those card carrying NRA members would love for you to show up on their doorstep to take possession of their firearms and survival stash...

forgetsusername··on Doomsday Prep for the Super-Rich
>society can make a comeback from pretty much any conceivable catastrophy

I agree. Where disaster preparation matters is in that period between "catastrophe" and "recovery". How long before things are normal again? Is that period a week? A month? A year? How bad will it get in between? That's what you need to survive.

forgetsusername··on Employees are happier when led by people with deep expertise
>A company that doesn't hire MBAs is one I want to work for.

Can you point to all the successful companies that make a conscious effort to not hire MBAs? Tough slog. Maybe these companies know something you don't?

But any company that eliminates candidates based simply off their degree is no company I want to work for.

forgetsusername··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
Right. That and the birth certificate thing wasn't a "lie", it was ignorant, dog whistle politicking.

Telling people you are going to strengthen whistle blowing laws to empower workers, then prosecuting a record number of people under the Espionage act is closer to a damaging lie.

forgetsusername··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
So it's more acceptable for politicians to admit to their lies at a later date, that to stick to them? Hmm...
forgetsusername··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
It's completely intentional, and very effective. Mix big lies and small lies with truths and half truths. Lie about friends and enemies, and that's what the media will focus on. So much misinformation that nobody knows was what is truth.
forgetsusername··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
A new trend?

You think Trump is inventing Whitehouse lies, right before our eyes? Politicians have a looooong history of lying, big lies that get peole killed ("Iraq WMDs are a slam dunk!") . Where have you been?

forgetsusername··on Why Nerds Are Unpopular (2003)
Startups are "cool", not "nerdy".
forgetsusername··on Why Nerds Are Unpopular (2003)
It depends on whether "nerd" is defined by personality or hobbies. If it's the latter, you're right, but so are they. If it's the former, what are the new nerds doing?
