foreverCarlos··on Show HN: RSS Brain
TweetDeck is one of the most popular Twitter clients. Columns are used to display feeds for different keywords, events, lists, groups, DMs, etc
foreverCarlos··on Show HN: RSS Brain
Sorry, I know this is not a PR review but if you are live coding anyway then:

Nit #1: images (or emojis) on either side of the text you added are not displayed in iOS Safari.

Nit #2: I am getting horizontal scrolling in iOS Safari (no content is cropped, just unnecessary scrolling due to some constraint miscalculation)

foreverCarlos··on Show HN: RSS Brain
Looks great! I have been actively reducing my blog and social media exposure and this might help clean up the remaining experience even more.

Somewhat tangential: does anyone know if there is a way to subscribe to the local timeline RSS feed (or even federated!) of a specific Mastodon instance? Individual users have RSS feeds but I could not find a timeline feed yet.

foreverCarlos··on One Thing – Put a single task or goal in your menu bar
In this case one doesn’t even need to be a visual person. I can’t even understand what this app does without a screenshot.
foreverCarlos··on Kagi – Paid Search Engine
There can be weird issues if you use other extensions, especially content blockers. So in my case I had to enable AdGuard Pro first and only then Kagi.
foreverCarlos··on No, Romanian Cops Did Not Find Andrew Tate Because of a Pizza Box
I have not. I prefer finding these unspoken trusts in other sources, personas like Tate are too mind-polluting for me.
foreverCarlos··on No, Romanian Cops Did Not Find Andrew Tate Because of a Pizza Box
I guess you are right! I just personally can relate much more to punk culture than to Tate. But the focus on the insult is probably very similar.
foreverCarlos··on No, Romanian Cops Did Not Find Andrew Tate Because of a Pizza Box
Oh Limbaugh! He was popular before my time, and the more I learn about him the more I am puzzled by who would enjoy listening to something like what you describe.
foreverCarlos··on No, Romanian Cops Did Not Find Andrew Tate Because of a Pizza Box
Right, that’s the word I was looking for!

However, my, perhaps incomplete, recollection of famous provocateurs of the past was centered around acts like Salvador Dali walking around with his anteater, rather than a misogynist kickboxer ranting about “weak men”.

foreverCarlos··on No, Romanian Cops Did Not Find Andrew Tate Because of a Pizza Box
Are these contrarian/scandalous/unapologetically insulting figures a new phenomenon or have they always been a part of pop culture? Seems like Tate-like or Yiannopoulos-like personas are attracting a lot of media coverage.
foreverCarlos··on Distributor cancelled an order and we need to move 30k bags of coffee [updated]
I noticed that some PMs (and now also engineers) use “tab” in place of “page”. So “adding a tab” means “adding a page”. I was very confused by that and still have to double check what they mean each time.
foreverCarlos··on Kagi – Paid Search Engine
I wouldn’t. Ultimately search is a business that is built on trust, and Google has failed it.
foreverCarlos··on Kagi – Paid Search Engine
You absolutely can! I got working after installing the extension and restarting Safari.
foreverCarlos··on Kagi – Paid Search Engine
Kagi is in fact better for me very frequently. I customized it to my liking and it shows better results than Google. Sure, I would be able to find the same content on Google, but that would require using keywords for site or file type.

With DDG I had anxiety that I am not finding the right results and would double check on Google too often. With Kagi this anxiety is gone - that’s a phenomenal accomplishment in my opinion.

foreverCarlos··on Discovering which parts of the brain are engaged when coding
Totally understandable! I didn’t mean that the people who don’t enjoy programming anymore are in some way inferior to others. Just that other projects or professions could offer them more joy.
foreverCarlos··on Discovering which parts of the brain are engaged when coding
I am curious: have you tried ADHD stimulants like Adderall before? And if you have, how does lion’s mane effect differ?
foreverCarlos··on Discovering which parts of the brain are engaged when coding
Great insight! Never considered how much I am relying on instinct when coding. Now thinking about it - it plays a very important role.
foreverCarlos··on Discovering which parts of the brain are engaged when coding
TBH even in those corners professors often have either a very outdated idea of programming or a surprisingly bad practical skill set.
foreverCarlos··on Discovering which parts of the brain are engaged when coding
I rarely see programming as a chore. It’s a creative process that engages me in the most challenging and enjoyable ways.

Not sure whether my experience is common…. But maybe if someone feels like programming is a chore most of the time it’s a strong signal that they need to change the job and/or profession?

foreverCarlos··on LastPass breach: The significance of these password iterations
Interesting. This is starting to look like gross negligence that might bite LogMeIn really hard.
foreverCarlos··on California’s population shrinks for third straight year
I could rephrase my point the third time but don't think that would help.

The fact that you both reject the idea that class war is central to Marxism and call yourself a "class reductionist" in the same sentence only further demonstrates your lack of introspection.

foreverCarlos··on California’s population shrinks for third straight year
Bulgaria has a _terrible_ single payer health care system, an astonishing level of corruption, a powerful mafia that basically controls the government, widespread racism against the gypsies, dislike for anything LGBT, and many more not so liberal things. Cherry-picking the single payer health care system is silly.

If you haven't noticed, I am talking about modern-day progressives, not liberal policies. The term "woke" describes best the difference between liberals/the original progressives and the modern type of progressives obsessed with race, sex, gender, and such.

foreverCarlos··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
A long password doesn't mean much by itself. If it has been previously leaked in a different breach, reused, is relatively easily brute-forced - then yes, you need to worry about that.

The bigger problem is: even if you are safe right now, your vault is out there. If at any point your master password surfaces somewhere - all your accounts are instantly compromised. So the only sensible solution IMO is to start rotating all passwords and usernames today.

foreverCarlos··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
Google nuked an old email address of mine which was using a custom domain (free Workspace account). That email contained all my correspondence for a period of about 10 years. No way to restore it, no way to flag it to anyone at Google. I have been slowly removing Google services from my life, one of the last transitions being to Kagi.
foreverCarlos··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
I feel this way but this is wishful thinking. It's more likely that they will transition even more into a gray privacy territory by marketing LastPass to less and less tech-savvy users, eventually bundling it for free with some spammy ad-supported service and/or preinstalled on a phone or laptop (basically, Norton and McAfee territory). The parent company is already not trustworthy, and this breach is the last nail into LastPass as a trustworthy service.
foreverCarlos··on Rigs of Rods: free and open source vehicle simulator that uses soft-body physics
A complete noob question (I am not a gamer and not a game developer):

Is this a big thing? I.e. is this enough to start a community-driven effort to create an open source alternative to something like GTA (at least in gameplays I watched transportation seems to play a big role)?

I have been wondering for a while why there is no open-source open world game similar to GTA, considering its poppularity.

foreverCarlos··on California’s population shrinks for third straight year
> The funny thing about homelessness is that its a material issue.

This is funny indeed. But for a different reason than you think. Bay Area progressives like yourself became so embedded into capitalist thinking that they discarded everything else from a working social system. Everything is solved with money (i.e. capital). Homelessness - money. Mental illness - money. Drug addiction - money. Racism - money. Crime - money.

It's no surprise that you did not understand my last statement - you are the prime example of it. Marxist because it's a class war, we just need to get rid of the rich and everything will be great. Capitalist because we can solve _everything_ with more money (ignore social responsibilities, opportunities, community, fairness). Wokeist because all inequality is caused by racism, sexism and other -isms. It's an amalgamation so intoxicating that even when you read the description, you don't realise it's about you.

foreverCarlos··on California’s population shrinks for third straight year
By the "original movement" I mean Woodrow Wilson and such, which was not neo-liberal. The modern progressive movement is still left-leaning, at least by American standards (yes, quite different from European).
foreverCarlos··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
Less waterproof? Oh no, how will we all be able to continue diving with our iPhones? This is such a common trans-European tradition, I fail to see how we will ever adapt to this change.
foreverCarlos··on Non-replaceable battery? Not if this proposed EU law passes
Just stay in the US and dump twice more e-waste into your local environment to compensate for those pesky Europeans.
