I'm looking for a full time Senior Software Engineer role, either as a team lead or an individual contributor. I've been working fully remotely for many years.

foreigner··on How to leave the house
Might want to look up the history of sidewalks a bit. TL;DR: it can be argued that the existence of sidewalks is a concession that roads are only for cars, where previously they were for everyone, including pedestrians.
foreigner··on Ask HN: Is ageism in tech still a problem?
I see lots of ads for "Senior Engineer" that want 3 years of experience.

foreigner··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
We get half of our genes from each of our parents. So unless this person has the extremely unlikely misfortune of partnering with someone else with the same rare mutation, their offspring would only have a 50/50 chance of inheriting their copy of this gene. There are also medical procedures (PGD) to bring that chance to virtually 0%.
foreigner··on Universe expected to decay in 10⁷⁸ years, much sooner than previously thought
Hews 2 on Android. I have a Pixel 6. Generally I'm satisfied with Hews 2, it just rendered this particular title in a funny way.
foreigner··on Universe expected to decay in 10⁷⁸ years, much sooner than previously thought
My HN reader displays this topic as "Universe expected to decay in 10 years, much sooner than previously thought".

And it's not wrong, that _is_ much sooner than previously thought!

foreigner··on Google has most of my email because it has all of yours (2014)
This is also true for our DNA, because of companies like 23AndMe!
foreigner··on Wikipedia: Database Download
LOL that is an amazing analogy, thank you.
foreigner··on 1,700 year old egg never broke
Fry it up with bog butter!
foreigner··on 2FA or Not 2FA
This assumes that services are handling your password responsibly and not e.g. storing it in clear text in a public S3 bucket, which in practice happens all the time.
foreigner··on A vending machine, on the internet
The problem is with our payments infrastructure there isn't a practical way to make a "machine" on the internet that accepts two quarters. OP's machine charges $5. The Stripe minimum charge is $0.50, and their fees on that charge would be almost $0.21.
foreigner··on A vending machine, on the internet
Same on Android. Cute idea tho.
foreigner··on How about trailing commas in SQL?
OMG please please please! Regarding the author's specific questions, I would suggest not letting perfect be the enemy of good.
foreigner··on Perpetual stew
ROFL thank you for that
foreigner··on Ask HN: AI bots everywhere – does anyone have a good whitelist for robots.txt?
I love this idea! Can anybody else with experience with this chime in? Does it actually work?
foreigner··on PostgreSQL Anonymizer
TIL that PostgreSQL has SECURITY LABEL! It seems like this could be useful for storing all sorts of metadata about database objects, not just security stuff. E.g. like the COMMENT but not global. From reading the docs it looks like you need a "label provider" to get it to work though. I can only seem to find a few label providers around, does anyone know of one that isn't security/anonymization related and could be used more generically?
foreigner··on Device-detector: Universal Device Detection library from User Agent
Way too expensive for me.
foreigner··on Device-detector: Universal Device Detection library from User Agent
I didn't realize srcset could select for "pixel density", thanks for the tip!
foreigner··on Device-detector: Universal Device Detection library from User Agent
I need a way to detect the screen DPI from the user agent, so I can return higher resolution images only to devices that can use them. I realize detecting that based on user agent may not always be accurate, but surely it could work the vast majority of the time. Does anybody know of a lib that implements that on NodeJS?
foreigner··on Prisma Postgres – Runs on bare metal and unikernels
Configure Prisma with https://www.prisma.io/docs/orm/overview/databases/postgresql...

Then you can pass `statement_timeout` when you create the `pg.Pool`

foreigner··on Do you need Redis? PostgreSQL does queuing, locking, and pub/sub
The key is two ints, not one. I use the first int for namespacing.
foreigner··on I couldn't find a free, no-login, no-AI checklist app–so I built one
Store the state in the URL
foreigner··on Prisma Postgres – Runs on bare metal and unikernels
It's possible now with the built-in "db adapter" plugin. I also have lots of misgivings about the Prisma ORM, but this particular thing is possible now.
foreigner··on How I write code using Cursor
So the Cursor AI can make edits to the .cursorrules file that's meant to control it? Hmm...
foreigner··on Court tells EPA to consider fluoride risk
Children's ice cream, Mandrake?
foreigner··on The Art Of Niwaki (2017)
I know it's absurd but somehow I've always intuitively felt that this sort of gardening philosophy (and especially bonsai) is cruel to the plants. It's like we're forcing the plant to grow in an unnatural way by abusing it.
foreigner··on Show HN: Using SQL's Turing completeness to build Tetris
This is great but even more impressive than the code is all the documentation and explanation of how it works. Well done!
foreigner··on Show HN: Infinity – Realistic AI characters that can speak
Wow that would be very cool.
foreigner··on Eating the Birds of America: Audubon's Culinary Reviews of America's Birds
This is the plot of "The Freshman", which is an excellent movie. Starring Matthew Broderick, and featuring Marlon Brando parodying himself in The Godfather!
