foopod··on Ink – Scripting language for interactive stories
I played around with it a bit a few years ago, not affiliated.

Ink is a markup language rather than an engine, so it plays nice with version control and managing huge stories. It also lets you handle variables and do some pretty complex logic inside the scripts.

This also this means you can integrate it with different workflows, dialog authors can editor and focus on dialog in the inkle editor. Then push their changes into a game built in Unity.

Definitely more suited to big teams than Twine which is more targeted at solo indie devs.

foopod··on Ask HN: What non-standard practices do your team do that you wish more did?
I try to pair program with others any chance I get. It depends on the person, but usually I feel like we are being more productive than two individuals. Problems are solved faster, decisions are easier and we are also knowledge sharing and learning at the same time.

I do say it depends though, I think that if the skill level is too far apart it becomes more like a knowledge transfer or teaching, which feels way less productive (even if it is productive). I am also not advocating for this full time.

Some people hate it, I would love to hear some arguments against it.

foopod··on The unreasonable effectiveness of simple HTML
I love examples like this, I hope you don't mind me tagging on my own.

Our team was doing in home interviews for a TV product. One of the customers subscribed to an expensive sports service and yet barely ever watched it.

When we probed it was because her two sons had left home in the last year and she knew they would come home when a game was on if she had the service. She said that she wish she knew when big/popular games would be coming up so she could invite them around and see them more often.

We trialed a fortnightly email newsletter for people that were subscribed but not very active. And saw a decent uptake in viewing almost immediately.

foopod··on Ask HN: How likely are you to not received a product from Kickstarter/Indiegogo?
This might be what you are looking for..

foopod··on Ask HN: How to monetize small side projects?
Looks like a very cool product and the price is more than reasonable. Some things that caught me up and maybe others are...

- What is a monitor? Is it a site? Or is a thing that can monitor multiple sites?

- Can I monitor multiple pages of the same site?

- I'm generally put off by time based trials, I get irrational fomo, maybe now isn't the best time to trial it, I can wait until when I am going to use it more (reading from work).

foopod··on Aquafaba
Agree, it will be so cool when we can have everything eggs offer and none of the cruelty.
foopod··on Ask HN: How/Where do you store/backup your photos safely?
Probably not the answer you are looking for. But a couple of years ago I moved to film photography, I have a small camera for day-to-day and medium format for other stuff.

I keep all the negatives as a physical backup and all the scans go straight into google photos. The special ones are printed and in a photo book.

Pros are no longer being plagued with thousands of photos, I am a lot more purposeful with my photography, as scanning technology improves I can rescan for higher quality photos. Also I am more creative with film, it has made me learn a lot more about photography.

Cons are low light photography is harder, development/scanning is costly if you aren't doing it yourself and if you are it costs time.

foopod··on Ask HN: Show me your half baked project
I signed up, this is really interesting.

I have been working on a journalling pwa (https://zenjournal.org/ - I need to change the name). The daily template is configurable, but it has been a week and I am already bored of my default template.

foopod··on Ask HN: My 11 year old child wants to learn programming, where to start?
I would definitely recommend getting started in something like Scratch, covering the basics of if/else, for loops, arrays.

And then moving into Loved2D or Pico8, both lua based with tons of tutorials and other games you can play/edit.

Whatever you end up doing though thee most import things are... + Having a clear goal + Clear and immediate feedback + Balancing the difficulty with skill level, not difficult enough and we get bored, too difficult and we get stuck.

foopod··on Can dairy farming ever be sustainable?
It blows my mind that we are still doing this.

It's not sustainable, it's not ethical, heck, it's not even good for us. It's a pleasure/habit thing.

The alternatives have been getting a lot better and a lot more popular too. It won't be long till the dairy industry has to do something drastic [0].

foopod··on Can dairy farming ever be sustainable?
I imagine most people trying to gain weight/muscle are not using milk to do it.

I think more people drink milk purely out of habit/pleasure.

foopod··on Can dairy farming ever be sustainable?
I am very interested in this as I only drink alternatives now and although not very much I will often eat foods made from the same ingredients (soy, almond, etc).

Glycemic Index - Are we talking about sweetened milk alternatives here? From what I have seen most alternatives come out the same or lower than dairy milk unless they have added sugar.

Vegetable Oil - I am sure alternatives contain more vegetable oils, but interested to know what you mean by "really really high". The opposing side is dairy milk containing saturated fat which has it's own implications.

Would love to see some studies if you have any handy.

foopod··on Ask HN: Most hassle-free Linux distro?
I have tried a bunch other distros before, but nothing really stuck until I started using Solus a couple of years ago.

No major issues at all, a few packages that I haven't been able to get in the official package manager, but nothing I haven't been able to work around or find somewhere else.

foopod··on Ask HN: My boss says I over complicate things. What should I do?
You totally can. Agile is more about having a growth mindset than 'doing scrum'.
foopod··on Ask HN: My boss says I over complicate things. What should I do?
Trying to offer a different opinion from the other commenters.

It sounds like your boss wants more outages. That is what less communication and projects delivered faster gets you.

I think it is probably a case of imposter syndrome and your boss having unreasonable expectations (you are probably perfectly capable and he is pushing/pressuring you to do as much as possible).

The fact that you have no CICD or QA makes me believe that you are trying to work around this by 'over complicating solutions' to reduce risk (which is a good move btw if your boss is the kind to place the blame on you for rushed deployments).

I could be reading this totally wrong, and you will know immediately if I am. Flexible working is great, but just as bad for your mental health if your boss is a dick. Maybe it is time to look for a new gig.

foopod··on Doomsday prepping – Disaster planning for less crazy folk (2016)
I don't know how big your place is, but I just don't have room in my apartment to justify keeping these kind of quantities of anything. My partner and I buy an 8 pack once or twice a month.
foopod··on Architecture Playbook
I would say one of the best ways to understand a domain is to rapidly prototype and test in it. One month to me would be the absolute longest.

I don't see MVP as necessarily what you launch with, but what you need to test with to prove market viability and reduce risk when spending more money/time.

foopod··on Ask HN: Why doesn't Hacker News open links in a new tab?
I never use middle click, for me it is ctrl + left click.
foopod··on Ask HN: I am writing a book what tools do you recommend?
I was similar to this. Wrote in Markdown, eventually ended up in Google Docs. But kept my source in markdown.

You can use Pandoc to generate PDF's then send out pdfs via Google Drive so people can comment and add suggestions. This was really useful for proofing, but having to pull up two screens and make changes to source instead of the annotated version was a bit painful.

foopod··on Ask HN: How can I contribute to climate change action as a developer?
Have you considered going vegan? In a recent Oxford study across 119 countries, they concluded that the "single biggest way" an individual can contribute is cutting animal products out of our lives[1]. It is getting easier and easier if you live in the developed western world. And the bonus that if you are already against animal cruelty, then it is probably something that already aligns with your morals too.

This is easily something you could do alongside your professional contribution too :)

foopod··on Show HN: Made my own expense tracker
Would be good to see more currencies (am from NZ), although not sure if it actually matters for most purposes.
foopod··on Ask HN: Smart Boards for Whiteboarding?
Recently joined a company where everyone has a touchscreen, not everyone has a pen. But even still, this factor alone has made technical collaboration easy, haven't tried the one in zoom, but the whiteboard built into teams has been very useful.
foopod··on How to Type 3x Faster
This concept intrigues me a lot. Not sure how I could make it work swapping between Windows and Linux, for work and play respectively.

Other things that come to mind are..

+ How would this affect your writing style? How would it affect your vocabulary?

+ If well done, I can see this having a positive impact around purposefully changing the way you write, by making shortcuts for the kinds of words you want to be using vs not using.

+ It is almost like creating another language as a translation/input layer. Could we agree on a mapping for the majority of English words to make this something worth learning? Something that could become common place?

foopod··on Ask HN: What's best laptop for programmer in 2020?
Depending on preference, either a Thinkpad T4XX or X1 laptop.

- T4XX for modularity, performance, price

- X1 if size is important and you have cash to burn

foopod··on Ask HN: What non-obvious tech/market may take off in the next few years?
Agreed. This is definitely a growing market today, I don't see why it wouldn't continue to grow. There are many areas that haven't been improved upon in decades as well. Things like..

+ Negative Scanning Technology (the most revered scanners are from 10+ years ago)

+ New Film Emulsions

+ Moving from gelatin to a plant-based substitute for gel emulsions

+ Opportunities for automation in film processing

foopod··on Ask HN: Resources for a 10 Year Old?
Pico-8. I recently discovered fantasy consoles and have been blown away by what people are making with them. If she is interested in making games but Scratch is too easy and boring, but full on game engines are too complicated then Pico-8 is perfect.

Based on Lua, with built in sprite and music editors makes things super easy and the community is awesome.

foopod··on Ask HN: Advanced Linux users, which distribution do you run? Why?
Not sure what you mean by advanced. But I have been using different distros for years now. Used to main debian. But for the last year I have been using Solus, and wouldn't look back. Very stable rolling release with official support for Budgie, Mate, Plasma and Gnome Desktop Environments.

I couldn't ask for more.

foopod··on Show HN: Spaceboard – Pinterest for Markdown Notes
A simple way to share a note that would work with your current setup could be generating a link with the notes content encoded in base64 or similar.

e.g. https://spaceboard.vercel.app/content/SGVsbG8gSE4hIFRoaXMgaX...

Like yeah, it's not pretty. But it would work.

foopod··on Website allows you to experience what it is like to live with dyslexia (2016)
It's almost like it needs eye tracking. Then swapping around letters while you aren't looking at them.
foopod··on Ask HN: What's your experience with async standups?
Depends what you mean by standups, if you are talking about a status meeting it probably works for most teams.

If you are talking about Scrum though, a stand up should be an opportunity for the team to assess where they are at in the sprint. Then discuss what they need to do to achieve the goal and make a plan for the day that puts them on the right path. Doing this asynchronously is a pain.
