foolrush··on 64% of all federal arrests last year were of non-U.S. citizens
Bzzt. False. All “crime” is a sociological construct. In your second case, are there laws in some cultures that permit you to stab your neighbour such as in the case of “self defence”? Yes.

How the nuance of those laws are defined is a social, cultural, and political exercise in power.

foolrush··on 64% of all federal arrests last year were of non-U.S. citizens
Because “crimes” are sociological constructs of a culture.

The same lack of critical analysis behind your question was also missing in the responses to Lombroso’s work in the late 19th century[1], essentializing and legitimating phrenology.

foolrush··on Google Doesn’t Want Staff Debating Politics at Work Anymore
Your ability to create the ontology of “What is political” versus “What is not political” classification is one of privilege.

“Food isn’t political” is only “not political” for someone who is well fed and not concerned about where their next meal is coming from.

Everything is political.

foolrush··on Contagion in Mass Killings and School Shootings (2015)
Many countries with a tremendous backbone in journalistic research have done pretty well using public funded news.

The BBC and it’s ilk was a beacon for years. The trope is exhausting.

foolrush··on Exploring the Visible Spectrum in Python
Nothing can currently, without a display that was fully spectral, and that doesn’t exist.

Seems a little lean on the color science front. colour-science.org could have done all of this, with much greater focus on the science.

Surgeons are not billionaires. Surgeons are trained.

Billionaires are not magical unicorns, and in fact are byproducts of nothing more than birthright, chance, and a culture that cultivates them.

foolrush··on [dead]
Then mobilize against them.

This isn’t inevitable, despite the framing they spend many dollars to convince you of such.

foolrush··on [dead]
Because every idea that suggests change from the status quo is wild and untenable, yet legislation that benefits the corporations and billionaires can happen extremely swiftly, almost without friction, nor even legislative discussion.

It’s not succinct to suggest that the wealth hoarding cannot be taxed. It’s not wild. It’s not untenable.

The onus of taxation being thrust upon the individual has been following a characteristic curve since the Great Depression. It was happening prior to that, with only WWII levelling it out.

Wild and untenable ideas are only wild and untenable because of the suffocating ideology that instructs you as such.

foolrush··on Ask HN: Was data science just hype?
It’s an epistemology / ontology question, as folks familiar with the humanities would spot in little time. Aka it’s not “data” until something empowers the created metric a meaning.

The map is not the territory.

I’m not sure that clipboard implementations provide ancillary metadata? Nor would it be interpreted given the wild-west application development model where application developers are the folks who would need to implement support?

Historicize.

Medicalization.

foolrush··on IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries
Read the research. Read the links. Study sociology. When you invent a metric and model, you imbue it with bias.

“Objective” is something that has been up for debate since the dawn of epistemology. It hasn’t been solved yet. It’s also worth understanding the Demarcation Problem.

foolrush··on IQ rates are dropping in many developed countries
You aren’t wrong, and yet you get downvoted.

SAT tests are rooted in eugenics theory. IQ testing, despite the original developer warning of incorrect application, was weaponized in that direction.

Yet here you find yourself getting voted down.

Deeper inspection reveals that both are tagged sRGB, which indicates they are for demonstrative purposes only.

I believe both A and B are at work; it's probably a direct copy of the input buffer without metadata making B likely impossible, if it were trying at all, which I'll speculate isn't even a possibility.
foolrush··on Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android
The transform to display the "solid red" block is actually the post-transformed data. The clipboard (rightfully) is carrying the original source buffer.

The issue would be the mechanics of the copy (attaching metadata) and pasting (interpreting the metadata in conjunction with the source image buffer.)

So technically, no, there's no conversion on the source data, it's the representation in the pasted context that's the issue.

foolrush··on Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android
Correct.

Haven't looked at the image too deeply, but this is likely the rendering intent being set so something other than the colorimetric offerings, such as Perceptual or Saturation. It could also be a poorly encoded image as well.

foolrush··on Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android
2015 MacBooks are not Display P3. What browser are you using, as that is incorrect behaviour.

The clipboard here is probably copying the image buffer in the untransformed state, and pasting it into MSPaint would dump those values incorrectly.

It's not entirely about bit depth. Think about 1 bit of a given colour light, it can turn on or off, but the bit depth doesn't tell us anything about the colour of the light it is turning on or off.

Encoding in a larger volume colour space may require additional bit depth to prevent posterization, but that's somewhat tangential. The larger issue is the number of vendors and operating systems that can't get it right. Windows is horrific, for example, with Android being at least as bad, as given by the accounts in the comments here.

foolrush··on Wide Color Photos Are Coming to Android
And have properly set up colour management working, which on Windows is close to zero percent probability.

This also ignores the shortcuts that Chrome and other browsers have taken on their road to colour management.

foolrush··on As Suicides Rise, Insurers Find Ways to Deny Mental Health Coverage
See Lyotard and his notion of Grand Narratives. The uniquely American Self Made Man conveniently overlooks wealth accumulated by men vis a vis free labour. To constrict these men, to suggest their wealth wasn’t “earned”, is to deny the other men of lesser social position of the “opportunity” to do so themselves.

That is, the myth perpetuates the energy that permits the men running these insurance companies to make billions. All reinforced by the whimsical meth-addled pipe dream that “I could be king too, one day” of the legion of white men of lesser caste.

foolrush··on Errol Morris accuses Kuhn of being a bad philosopher and bad person
Because epistemology is simple. /facepalm

Postmodernism posits a plurality of truths, as well as underscores the demarcation problem.

foolrush··on Errol Morris accuses Kuhn of being a bad philosopher and bad person
Postmodernism is a toolset, and the thinkers who are bunched together under its umbrella, frequently unwillingly, point out the issues with late rationalist epistemology.

That is, the postmodernists are responsible for attempting to show the rest of the people that the boat has severe cracks. Fascists and right wing authoritarianism has already been exploiting the cracks forever.

Blaming postmodernism for anything is laughable. It’s not a cause, it’s a series of well informed observations.
