foobaw··on Facebook scraped call, text message data for years from Android phones
From my insider source, I'm told that permissions will change significantly in the near future.

Just FYI: a lot of other apps also utilize the same permission. Just an aside but Google also has the authority to whitelist certain applications for these permissions - meaning they can enable certain invasive permissions without asking the users.

We shouldn't just vilify Facebook. It was how the privacy framework was designed for Android that's the issue. This will change in the next upcoming versions.

foobaw··on Elon Musk Deletes Own, SpaceX and Tesla Facebook Pages After #deletefacebook
Considering that Elon and Mark constantly disagreed on subjects like AI, this isn't surprising.

Also notable is that typical Tesla customers probably don't rely on Facebook anyway so this should not have consequences.

foobaw··on Evolution Is the New Deep Learning
I just tried their music maker (https://www.sentient.ai/sentient-labs/ea/lstm-music/).

Was this ONLY trained by Bach Chorales? Everything sounds so fugue.

foobaw··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
Would love to see the log files of the car to see why and how this occurred. I'm pretty sure it's known internally - but is Uber obligated to release them for the public?
foobaw··on Zuckerberg on Cambridge Analytica situation
Excited to see what he has to say on CNN. I really hope someone knowledgeable in the actual technical aspects will be present to ask questions.
foobaw··on Guide to Slack import and export tools
You should never talk about extremely personal / private stuff via DMs anyway. I don't really care if my employer could read my DMs because they're mostly work-related small talk anyway.
foobaw··on FTC Probing Facebook for Use of Personal Data, Source Says
To be fair, privacy and security are two different things
foobaw··on Self-driving Uber car kills Arizona woman crossing street
I know quite a people working on this at Uber ATG. They are in panic mode.
foobaw··on Stephen Hawking has died
R.I.P Stephen. He was such an inspiration to a lot of people and probably will be for a lot of people in the future.
foobaw··on Feds Bust CEO Allegedly Selling Custom BlackBerry Phones to Sinaloa Drug Cartel
It's also not very difficult to change your IMEI..This would make it quite complex for feds to investigate, I presume.
foobaw··on Scrcpy – An app to display and control Android devices
This is amazing - something that the Android team should definitely have supported already..

Great work!

foobaw··on Facebook Really Is Spying on You, Just Not Through Your Phone's Mic
It says that apps in the "background" cannot access user input and sensor data. This means that even if the app gains permission in the foreground, it won't have access when the app is running in the background.

Note that this use case was extremely rare anyway, but I know Google did this simply to ease people's minds (I know several people on the Android framework team).

foobaw··on Facebook Really Is Spying on You, Just Not Through Your Phone's Mic
It's simply impossible for FB to record audio.

When I worked in the OEM industry, there were rigorous standards and compliances that had to be met to ship our phones. If an app was invoking audio recording without the proper permissions, this would be a huge red flag. Google would never approve the phone to be shipped as it would be breaking their CDD.

Also, if audio data was being transmitted using some obscure APN that does not use mobile data or Wi-Fi, OEMs could still easily detect these from the modem side, no matter how encrypted the data is. After all, the app is still JUST an app, in the system folder with all the other apps like Candy Crush. Unless this specific audio recording feature was built into the Android framework, I will say it is 100% impossible.

Note: this is just for Android. I have no idea how iOS works.

foobaw··on Previewing Android P
This is actually a pretty big deal. I think one way they can really solve it is to improve the emulator to make it actually useful.

For now, you'd just have to ship a Pixel device to France and pay an extremely high fee.

Just a side note but I remember seeing this then and found out that Mayur left Google after making these comments (July 2015).

foobaw··on Hangouts Chat, Google’s Slack competitor, comes out of beta
Even the product lead of G Suite at Google is aware of how crazy it is (https://twitter.com/happyinwater/status/969092575687729153). I hope this implies they're doing something about all this mess.

foobaw··on YC's Series A Diligence Checklist
This list may seem daunting to a lot of people, but as a "noob" startup founder, most of these become self-explanatory as you go along.

Just make sure you keep a record of everything you do officially and get help in legal/accounting in any questionable aspects of your work.

Don't wing anything. Don't be lazy, be super detail-oriented in everything and you'll be okay.

foobaw··on Ketamine blocks bursting in the lateral habenula to rapidly relieve depression
curious: are you based in the US? Would it not be covered by insurance? $400/shot is a lot for Ketamine.

foobaw··on The differences between English and Korean
As a native Korean speaker, learning Russian was probably the most difficult experience. I still can't figure out the proper accents. I also don't know enough about linguistics to understand why it's so difficult.

In contrast, learning English and Spanish were trivial in comparison.

foobaw··on How One Jira Ticket Made My Employer $1MM/Month: 7 Metrics That Actually Matter
Interesting article - most of these metrics should be learned on the job for a lot of product managers.
foobaw··on Tesla employees say Gigafactory problems worse than known
To be fair, a lot of tech companies these days offer unlimited PTO. Then again, taking more than 6~7 weeks is still somewhat taboo.
foobaw··on Robinhood Crypto – Invest in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies
I think Robinhood's purpose is exactly to promote "emotional, irrational day trading." Isn't that part of what impacts the market anyway? There are tons of bad traders in any given platform, and you're right that Robinhood increases that likelihood but you can't exactly blame an app for poor trading motivations. That's a due diligence.
