I stayed away from the management track but friends who didn't tell me one of the metrics they are graded on is retention, i.e. if your reports leave at a more than average rate you will have a problem.

But, isn't the albedo of a solar panel farm still way dark? It means the radiation is still being captured rather than reflected back up.

I think the problem is every tribe/nation/area has a percent of psychopaths (the estimates are 1 in 25), and if they run unchecked they end up doing evil things. This can then echo as the other side seeks retribution, etc. It takes significant effort to stomp out the fire.

The really awesome thing about the 1/10 power consumption is that the existing circuits/wiring/sockets now suddenly support 10x the light without burning down your house. I'm a sucker for well lit space and these lights are just heaven for me.

Same, I find shared history not very useful.

However what I do find useful is eternal history. It's doable with some .bashrc hacks, and slow because it's file based on every command, but:

- never delete history

- associate history with a session token

- set separate tokens in each screen, tmux, whatever session

- sort such that backward search (ctrl-R) hits current session history first, and the rest second

Like half my corporate brain is in a 11M history file at this point, going back years.

What I would love is to integrate this into the shell better so it's using sqlite or similar so it doesn't feel "sluggish." But even now the pain is worth the prize.

How about don't call stuff that travels faster than sound a "fasterthansoundic missile" if you don't want people to confuse it with all other old stuff that also travels faster than sound!

My biggest problem with a service like pest control is I can't tell what it does. I'm not talking about getting rid of a hornet nest or squirrels in the attic, I'm talking about the door-to-door salespeople who want you to subscribe to a quarterly sprinkling of some magic dust around your house. If I could get a trustworthy measurement like "number of 2x4s not destroyed by carpenter ants" or "sqft of siding not rotten because of nests" I would be a lot more open to it.

I think that a big part of it is the transparency brought on by the vast communication bandwidth that came online starting after the dot com years. This stuff happened before just the same, but was concealed by media gatekeepers.

These days it's hard for the screen and sound alone to compete with home theater tech. So the only remaining edge a theater might have is the presence of others. The Minecraft movie was the perfect example of this. Some of our kid's classmates went to see it multiple times due to the viral audience cues. And to think that some theaters tried to suppress it.

That's all great, but to me the primary point is rms' original grievance with that printer driver. If the source is open, anyone can improve it. Multiple anyones can improve it! They can even collaborate on message boards and make a nice community, but this is certainly not a requirement.

The biggest problem I ran into without a code formatter is that team wasted a LOT of time arguing about style. Every single MR would have nitpicking about how many spaces to indent here and there, where to put the braces, etc. etc. ad nauseam. I don't particularly like the style we are enforcing but I love how much more efficient our review process is.

Oddly enough I found the Duplo line much more fun to play with as our kid went through the blocks years. You could build something substantial with fewer block clicks, there were fewer different types of blocks, they were less fiddly and prone to vanishing into rugs/carpets, etc. Also the proper Legos tended to be sets which makes it very stressful to mix them into a misc bag.

In a way I found sketchy/scammy aspects of Roblox helpful to educate my kid about that sort of thing. Early on a classmate scammed her out of some item on AdoptMe, nothing monetary valuable but it shook her and really caused her to think critically about online transactions and security. These days the friend group talks about IP bans and account bans so we did a good session about what IP addresses are, how they work, etc. She also did temper her expectations on how attached to get to the main account since it can get hacked or locked etc.
