foobarian··on Vanishing from Hyundai’s data network
I can't figure out why car manufacturers insist on building whole parallel universes of UIs, media apps, nav apps et cetera. Doesn't it cost a ton? Do people actually use/want this stuff?

To be clear, I am not arguing against pickup trucks. The reason I bring up the bed length is a personal pet peeve thing. I have some amount of OCD going on, and I will be damned if I will ever approve of a truck that can't fit a piece of lumber in its bed without leaving the tailgate open that can fit into a Ford Fiesta with the trunk closed.

I am fully aware of why and how people use pickup trucks and I have no beef with that on cultural grounds. But if I were to get one it would be a long bed truck and I would sacrifice the cab space if needed.

foobarian··on Telo MT1
Ironically most pickup truck beds are shorter than 8' and most likely a 8' piece of lumber would have to lay diagonally sticking out over one of the edges.

Still good for occasional piece of furniture, lots of lumber, or plywood.

foobarian··on NSF has suspended Terry Tao's grant
What I don't understand is why not go along with letting at least WB or also Gaza get recognized as Palestine and do what India and Pakistan did going forward. Seems like it would be a lot more likely to work and a lot less risky. Maybe there are some special resources in either place?

Or, when apps try to intercept sleep the OS can pop an Allow/Don't allow dialog before the app can actually achieve this
foobarian··on How Scientific Empires End
The only reason we even had good science is the arms race. When there was a threat of someone else getting nukes or radar then the anti-science cohorts were silenced with a quickness, and large percentages of GDP were thrown at R&D, including poaching scientists from abroad, to get there first.

With nothing like that looming right now, there is no check and balance on the anti-science regiment, and so sliding downhill we go. Sadly I don't see this changing either, unless theoretical physicists turn up the basis for some new weapon.

foobarian··on Try the Mosquito Bucket of Death
Even worse is, say you have 20 neighbors on the block each scheduling yard maintenance separately, then it's like the balls in bins problem, and you pretty much end up with these abominations making noise at least once a day (and weekends included because that's when Dad has time to do the weekend warrior thing and it takes him 3x as long as a professional crew). Sigh.

I would love to block the shorts at home router level. I hesitate to just block the site altogether
foobarian··on Try the Mosquito Bucket of Death
The thing that really makes me wonder are some of the horror stories where new homeowners were surprised by the HOA existence, or at least some of the enforcement actions. It also seems like an easy thing to fake for the clicks, who knows.
foobarian··on Try the Mosquito Bucket of Death
I think the next house I move to, I will look for an HOA that prohibits combustion-powered yard tools, and hires an all-electric crew for common maintenance, cost be damned.
foobarian··on M8.7 earthquake in Western Pacific, tsunami warning issued
Ah, and here I was wondering if it would be possible to surf one of these for miles in if the timing were right. The grandparent answers that question.

Sadly this is probably all clearly spelled out in the original fine print. And the only way to guarantee you can avoid these kind of shenanigans is to go full Stallman and run everything yourself.

I keep seeing comments that Li-ion is getting cheaper at an amazing rate but somehow the 18650 cells I seem to see online keep getting more expensive. Anyone have a source?
foobarian··on Psilocybin treatment extends cellular lifespan, improves survival of aged mice
Wonder if the extra lifespan time is larger than the extra time spent mentally incapacitated due to the effects of the drug.
foobarian··on CARA – High precision robot dog using rope

Wow. Would love to see cities ranked by score against this list.

Hah, a "monkey amplifier" army! Look at garbage coming out of infinite monkeys keyboards and boost what fits. Sigh

foobarian··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
The surface arguments for abandoning these kinds of programs (also USAID, recalling diplomats, bunch of research funding) seem straightforward: "there is a deficit, why pay all this money for ostensibly wasteful work, etc."

Where I get frustrated is when the admin turns around and massively expands the deficit by throwing cargo ships full of money at other wasteful, in my opinon, programs. That tells me the fiscal responsibility talk was just a pretense to do another kind of money grab and "own the libs" at the same time. And at the end of the day the argument reduces to opinions on what is wasteful and what is not.

Example: you claim UN hasn't been a source of soft power "for the better part of this century." Well, says you - I think it has done a great job. Now what?

foobarian··on Germany's Fairytale Castles Added to UNESCO's World Heritage List
It's a fake castle inasmuch as it was not built out of some military defensive necessity, but a hunting lodge for the rich and powerful to enjoy a retreat. So basically a fancy vacation home. But of course it's a real place with real historic value and absolutely worth a visit.
foobarian··on Germany's Fairytale Castles Added to UNESCO's World Heritage List

foobarian··on Solar-plus-storage technology is improving quickly
The OP numbers are fascinating. I wonder how the equivalent to the "station wagon full of tapes hurtling down the highway" looks for batteries.
foobarian··on What happens when housing prices go down?
It may not be a perfect analogy but I disagree that it's completely invalid. Use some imagination to make it work, e.g. with institutional support instead of having just local acts now there is Taylor, and Beyonce, and a few dozen other famous musicians.

Not everyone can live in San Francisco, but there exist other equivalent "nice places" of which there are too few.

foobarian··on What happens when housing prices go down?
Nice analogy. So it seems the solution would be to create more Taylor Swifts then, by investing in music schools and programs, talent shows, scouting, etc., where the analogous thing would be to create more "nice places to live" with all the desirable attributes like walkability, jobs, public transport, etc. It's a tall order since land and climate are the ultimate scarce resources, but there are probably some underutilized spots that could support it. The rest would also be difficult due to property rights.
