foobarian··on Public Montessori programs strengthen learning outcomes at lower costs: study
I wonder sometimes if that kind of school is only good for the high-strung go-getter child prodigy types because they are so hands off. But the very lack of metrics and standardization that purports to help with that kind of mission unfortunately certainly makes the shopping a lot harder for prospective parents. Similar with other private schools later on. Is it a good academically strong place where kids get pushed and excel later? Or is it a party den where rich kids joke around and snort coke all day? Hard to tell. It also depends on the student and parent body itself. Good luck :-)

Another thing that kind of tempers my opinion of this kind of school is anecdotal, some friends were lamenting that in their otherwise excellent public elementary school in an affluent district, some parents are pulling their kids out of _first grade_ and moving to private school because "there is not enough homework." What a sad image.

The problem is not the customer safety, it's the worker's. Look into how things used to be done in the "good old days" and see if you'd be ok going to that kind of job. [1]

foobarian··on Wasp Blower
My problem was the nest was hard to reach, and I was afraid that even if spraying did manage to kill the wasps, I would be left with a gross wet decomposing mass in the wall causing rot and water damage. I still need to figure out how to remove the existing nest but I'll wait until it's vacant :-)
foobarian··on Wasp Blower
I just waited a week.

Similar story, had a nest in the walls of a bay window bump. Too far up the side to spray effectively, but they had one weakness: there was a clear entrance spot. So I duct taped a pool vacuum hose next to it and ran it into the garage attached to a shop vac. Left it running for a day, problem solved. It was fun listening to the "ka-thunk" sound when each insect got sucked in. I think for next time I'll make some kind of detector based on audio to count the kills.

Reading these words makes me break out in cold sweat :-) I really hope they don't

foobarian··on US axes website for reporting human rights abuses by US-armed foreign forces
Guessing some mid level functionary had to come up with 3 things to do that week and this is an easy bullet point. Saying "Actually we should keep this thing because we're playing 4D chess" doesn't look good on such a status report.
foobarian··on Radios, how do they work? (2024)
To be fair, they did qualify it as "advanced" math :-)

Wonder if there would be any way to redress this in small claims court.

Seems isomorphic to today's slave-driving death-marching CEOs that we celebrate so much. In a past time they would be right up there on the podium

You would think this would eventually show up on the balance sheets, right? Presumably a lot of their big customers have SLAs with money penalties, so maybe next quarter earnings? Or quarter after that?
foobarian··on Americans can't afford their cars any more and Wall Street is worried
I mean... I guess he's been in new cars his whole life then? And he manages to come up with the money for it. Good for him? Wonder what sacrifices he made in other areas of his life as a trade.
foobarian··on Doing well in your courses: Andrej's advice for success (2013)
- I find that writing notes in class helped me learn just through the physical action of my hands. (I think there is some formal study of this as a phenomenon). I am poorly disciplined so at least getting that hour or so of writing notes is probably more than I would have managed alone.

- In class, sometimes the lecturer provides helpful intuition for something through informal speech or even intonation. For example I struggled with the concept of ergodicity from a textbook until I saw someone explain it to me like I'm 5. I find that often, textbooks are like man pages, in that they are almost afraid to provide informal/intuitive writing for fear of appearing unserious.

p.s. if ChatGPT existed 30 years ago I would have managed to learn so much more instead of spinning wheels on dry writing. ChatGPT is really good at being a "personalized manpage explainer"

Unfortunately MAC addresses are hard to mask. With a DIY camera you could customize the MAC address, but it would still be visible. To truly hide it I suppose you'd need to use a wired interface. Ubiquiti used to make 700MHz WiFi adapters but I don't think those are a thing any longer

I had just gone down this rabbit hole for unrelated reasons (looking into yields). Nvidia's 5090 die is 750 mm^2, managing 419 TFLOPS on the FP16 benchmark.

phat·ic

/ˈfadik/

adjective

denoting or relating to language used for general purposes of social interaction, rather than to convey information or ask questions. Utterances such as hello, how are you? and nice morning, isn't it? are phatic.

Origin: GREEK: phatos (spoken)

foobarian··on Apple M5 chip
To me it's not a MacOS vs Windows thing. It's a hardware build quality thing for sure; but even more importantly it's the integration with the OS. Now, you could say we could get a team together and integrate Windows too, but the problem is this is vastly more effective when the hardware and software are co-designed in the same house with strong feedback loops. As a result Apple's product will inevitably be better than those without such an organizational backbone.

Quoth the Tao of Programming:

8.4

Hardware met Software on the road to Changtse. Software said: "You are Yin and I am Yang. If we travel together, we will become famous and earn vast sums of money." And so they set forth together, thinking to conquer the world.

Presently, they met Firmware, who was dressed in tattered rags and hobbled along propped on a thorny stick. Firmware said to them: "The Tao lies beyond Yin and Yang. It is silent and still as a pool of water. It does not seek fame; therefore, nobody knows its presence. It does not seek fortune, for it is complete within itself. It exists beyond space and time."

Software and Hardware, ashamed, returned to their homes.

foobarian··on A 12,000-year-old obelisk with a human face was found in Karahan Tepe
The fact that there was a skeleton in one of the rectangular-ish holes made me think it was a burial ground, with the obelisk as the headstone. But I am not an archeologist so idk

Yes, agreed. Presumably if you just compressed the sorted string it would compress even better, though not reversibly. So compressing the preceding column (preceding since rows are rotations) seems the next best thing
