I've stayed in ~70 Airbnbs over the last few years and have never gotten those sorts of demands. That seems unreasonable and I'd just ignore them.

There is certainly lots of incentive for many businesses, especially those that don't rely on repeat business, to do things this way. I imagine things will gradually get worse until lawmakers step in and require full prices up-front (as they have in Australia, for example).

As far as I know, the only cities full of apartments that prohibit short-term rentals are high CoL cities in the US and perhaps some parts of Europe. I've travelled all around the US, Latin America, Africa, and Asia without issue.

To offer the alternative experience -- I've stayed at >60 Airbnbs around the world and have never had to lie or sneak around. Much of the time I've picked up the keys from the building's reception, telling them that I'm an Airbnb guest.

You don't need to go back in history to see this. In many countries where such speech laws exist today, they're used by majority groups in order to stop minority groups from speaking out publicly about injustices. This is common in Asian countries right now.

Regardless, censorship on the internet is inherently ineffective. If this speech is banned from Facebook, it will move to other forums. If it's made illegal, it will move to the "dark web".

The only real solution to combat this sort of thinking is to debate it directly, refuting arguments rather than shutting them down entirely.

It's more that they paid to cover the costs of all of the other emergency room patients that never paid their bills.

No one actually pays the sticker price anyway, that's an artifact of the strange ways that medical billing works. People that pay in cash (rather than insurance) are given large discounts.

There's something really strange happening here. It looks like a few days ago someone anonymously edited the wikipedia page to add a designer and claim it's open source, linking to the Github page that was just created a few minutes before:

This would be very useful if they could automatically solve the "last mile" problem for transit. For example, if I can make a single order from home to work, involving both Uber for the short distance from home to the train, and then a train ticket to work, then this could add some value.

These are daily occurrences in parts of TX and FL in the summer, and people generally do drive through them.

This seems pretty clear. He had a bad experience but didn't leave a review for the place, and then when the review period expired, he saw that the place had left a bad review for him. Airbnb keeps both users blind to each other's reviews until the review period has expired, because otherwise people will use the threat of leaving a bad review (as retribution) in order to ensure they get reviewed well. But he did an end-run around this and posted reviews on multiple other sites, which makes airbnb's system break down.

It sounds like Airbnb just needs a way for people to respond to reviews that are left for them. I'm surprised it doesn't have that already.
