folmar··on Be Aware of the Makefile Effect
I use it more often and also start with copy-paste header, that includes:

* all packages needed for my language (fontenc, babel, local typography package) * typical graphicx/fancyhdr/hyperref/geometry packages that are almost always needed * a set of useful symbol and name definitions for my field

If you are not writing math or pure text in English only LaTeX is batteries not included.

folmar··on Show HN: I built open source file sharing solution using AWS S3
If you do any less typical files Google Drive will balk at you at all times, at least for the other users who use the browser UI.

What works bad: * folder with lots of medium size files * large ZIP * video bigger than a few tens of megabytes

folmar··on Intel's $475M error: the silicon behind the Pentium division bug
I can reliably crash my GPU firmware/driver so that reboot is needed to fix, so not everything gets recovered/is recoverable (on Linux at least).
folmar··on Intel's $475M error: the silicon behind the Pentium division bug
Same here. But the older version are rock solid, and have very low power draw for office/browsing, which is really nice.
folmar··on Where can you go in Europe by train in 8h?
You can (except for Germany I think, that stopped accepting the tickets issued from international tariff book few years ago), but this will get you the base price, without any possible discounts, so is usually way more expensive than tickets bought directly. But gives you tickets with date change/cancellation possible.
folmar··on Where can you go in Europe by train in 8h?
Not needed, at least in most Europe. Operators share data and you can get timetable information from any of them for all trains, including combined itinearies, and the expectation is you get information from your local train company.
folmar··on Commercial tea bags release microplastics, entering human cells
Depends on where you live, in Europe if you get the generic branded (not "the" Weck brand) ones they are $2 for small and $3-4 for bigger ones.
folmar··on Humans are unreliable models of mouse disease
1 gallon = 7.6 l, and anectada from Wikipedia (referenced to https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/strange-but-true-...) says 6 l in 3 hours killed a man. Half-life of caffeine is approximately 5 h, so quite similar.
folmar··on Debian opens a can of username worms
Without any issue is a stretch, using a French keyboard is bad enough experience for passwords, not everyone uses standard English keyboards.
folmar··on An analysis of the Keycloak authentication system
Dex is very good if you have some other auth in place, but the local user store is quite bare-bones, and not all providers are equally good.

On the other hand it is very light on resources, so if you need it anywhere you can add it to you app/deployment and be happy.

folmar··on Yes, it ‘looks like a duck,’ but carriers like the new USPS mail truck
Some manufacturers have a way of "officially" replacing the chassis, as in getting the chassis as a replacement part and procedure to replace it.

For example see BMW part number 51 71 7 409 410, chassis for F16 https://www.online-teile.com/bmw-ersatzteile/51717409410_Bod...

The law might look this or other way depending on where you are.

folmar··on Can Injection: keyless car theft (2023)
The low-tech solution is to remove the electronics from key and glue the near the ignition switch, but needs to be done before you loose the last working original key.
folmar··on Show HN: Jelly – A simpler shared inbox for small teams
Easiest is to leave/mark message unread if you are not taking action. Not a 100% solution, but often good enough.
folmar··on IMG_0416
Works for me (current ESR on Linux).
folmar··on The motor turns too much
Creep is needed for tight parking, for example when you'd like to move the car 10 cm forward. To simulate driving without it, turn on auto-hold and use only accelerator and brake for parking -- tight spots become extremely hard.
folmar··on European govt air-gapped systems breached using custom malware
It's usability feature, not security. For cameras/floppy-like usage it's to prevent accidental write/erase errors, which are quite common in managing a large stash of cards.
folmar··on European govt air-gapped systems breached using custom malware
Yes, but the vendor also gives some reasonable transmission software that will be able to transmit common protocols (like OPC/DB updates and so on) multiplexed and abstracting away the confirmationless medium.
folmar··on Sailfish Mobile OS
Not in Poland either. Pretty much every bank has also SMS 2FA available.
folmar··on Attacking UNIX Systems via CUPS
You can use --data in nmap to send it easily to the range of hosts (but the server is still needed).
folmar··on Octopuses seen hunting together with fish, punching those that don't cooperate
Octopuses are usually specifically fished [Cephalopods. Ecology and Fisheries, Peter Boyle, Paul Rodhouse. Chapter 16].
folmar··on Hacking Kia: Remotely controlling cars with just a license plate
This is quite common in Europe. There is normally no special relationship with the original dealer and the service history is centralised for most manufacturers.
folmar··on U.S. court orders LibGen to pay $30M to publishers, issues broad injunction
IPFS Companion
folmar··on U.S. court orders LibGen to pay $30M to publishers, issues broad injunction
Before ebooks came abundant the publishers said some 10% of book price is their money, another 10-15% is for author and editors, and the rest is eaten up by print and distribution+shop. I guess the distribution through publishers' site can be done at 20% of sales price.
folmar··on Show HN: Hosting my website using my C web server
And TLS can be handle by kernel if you target linux only. https://docs.kernel.org/networking/tls.html
folmar··on Show HN: OpenFreeMap – Open-Source Map Hosting
Nearby San Marino needs similar treatment.
folmar··on OpenBSD now enforcing no invalid NUL characters in shell scripts
`find` is almost always easier, but you can get quite far with `ls -Q` if you can assume GNU ls.
folmar··on FCC wants all phones unlocked in sixty days, AT&T and T-Mobile aren't so keen
Sure they had, it was just not in frequent use. See page 75 of manual for SE T68i (2002) for example https://archive.org/details/manualsbase-id-62423/page/74/mod...
folmar··on Synthetic diamonds are now purer, more beautiful, and cheaper than mined
The hardness is attractive but the poor heat resistance is a major problem for many uses. For a normal angle grinder you can use normal abrasive disc without paying much attention, but with a diamond-grit one you can easily burn the diamonds.
folmar··on Synthetic diamonds are now purer, more beautiful, and cheaper than mined
I get infinite captcha hell.
folmar··on Arduino PLC IDE
Any large supplier will hapilly sell you one PLC of any type (there are also quite a lot projects needing just one piece of specific PLU), the tools might kill your budget though. And there are special beginner/low scale series like Siemens LOGO with simplified configuration and cheaper simpler tooling.
