folmar··on Keep Android Open
Maybe some, but certainly not all in the list. Neither Ryanair nor Wizzair need app, you can do everything in the browser.
folmar··on Apple alerts exploit developer that his iPhone was targeted with gov spyware
You need to consider your location known to the government at all times if they know they'd want it beforehand. Most places are either surveilled heavily or sparsely populated, i.e. good for satellite-based observation. Maybe also to big enough corporations if they really want.

This does not imply that it is easy to track everyone everywhere at all times. I guess most targeted ones would like to protect their communication, and even meetings in person are possible if you keep some safeguards.

folmar··on Show HN: bbcli – A TUI and CLI to browse BBC News like a hacker
The link is payload, maybe you could link to a concrete image or some free search engine?
folmar··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
Don't ask about fire power switch
folmar··on Delayed Security Patches for AOSP (Android Open Source Project)
This ship has sailed, in the past Amazon's store did not succeed a lot, but there are already a few important enough offsprings: * Huawei with separate store and no Gapps * Samsung with importantly different browser and ton of extra features, also another store * in China the app-in-wechat and similar are a major thing

If you develop for a diverse set of user you need a lot of effort.

folmar··on We moved from AWS to Hetzner, saved 90%, kept ISO 27001 with Ansible
You must be looking from US perspective. In EU I don't think I've seen any SSAE provided or wanted, and I've seen a bit of medium to big industry.
folmar··on Delta Chat is a decentralized and secure messenger app
The way to have guaranteed encryped is creating two user encrypted group chat.

folmar··on Microsoft Is Deleting Old Drivers from Windows Update and It Might Break Your PC
There is one class of devices for which you often want manufacturer's out-of-kernel driver: Nvidia graphic cards. Otherwise all drivers are usually already in the kernel.
folmar··on Apple introduces a universal design across platforms
Also this is way better compared to Android, where "remove animations" make apps feel like a dumpster fire, many of them lose parts of UI that were animated instead of showing them statically, feedback for touching gets often lost, things are waiting for animation so you are still stuck waiting a second or two for nothing, etc.
folmar··on Why not use DNS over HTTPS (DoH)?
With or without DoH you ISP knows all hosts you connect to anyway, for HTTP and similar including hostname. ECH could have been an improvement but does not get much traction.
folmar··on California has got good at building giant batteries
It's the LPG that is a byproduct (of both natural gas and crude oil distillation).
folmar··on Why I no longer have an old-school cert on my HTTPS site
`cfssl` shows how easy could getting certificates signed be for the typical use case.

folmar··on Anubis saved our websites from a DDoS attack
I would go for making the AI companies pay. Identifying end users for other abuse works but there are problems on state borders, for monetary solutions it should be easier.
folmar··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
On the other hand to find something in youtube I'll write the phase "$my_query youtube" and works ways better than youtube's own search.
folmar··on Widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal
Network is not required for mag-strip or emv operations, but the terminal has to be configured accordingly (and has to have some way to send batch of transactions for settling). It's less common now, but fully supported.
folmar··on Taking Notes with Joplin
Not really comparable: - not local-first - sends everything to Google, not encrypted as far as the website goes - you need a phone app to buy premium plan (really???)
folmar··on There are two types of dishwasher people
Doesn't really need two dishwashers, just two set of racks and a cupboard that can accommodate the other set.
folmar··on Mozilla launching “Thundermail” email service to take on Gmail, Microsoft 365
Yes, Thunderbird search become unusable when they removed the option to run search on server. But apparently the "quick filter" works in a different way so if you can live with one folder only you can use it.
folmar··on Mozilla launching “Thundermail” email service to take on Gmail, Microsoft 365
One exception is the country you actually live in, then a local TLD wins you at least a more reasonable way to go to court.
folmar··on Mozilla launching “Thundermail” email service to take on Gmail, Microsoft 365
I do mostly for work (Alpine does not work out that nice if everyone is sending Exchange-blended tag soup), and a lot of my friends do, many of them (non-IT) engineers.
folmar··on The Pain That Is GitHub Actions
I see the slow cache problem as universal. On a single-machine gitlab runner instance the upload to _local_ cache seems to take ages, double digit number of seconds for 100 MB archive.
folmar··on The Pain That Is GitHub Actions
There is a debugger for bash: https://github.com/Trepan-Debuggers/bashdb Not that I'm recommending 10k-line programs in bash, but a debugger is useful when you need it.
folmar··on The Pain That Is GitHub Actions
Pretty much any major teleconference software does that for a few years already.
folmar··on Briar: Peer to Peer Encrypted Messaging
Also Fdroid has support for local distribution and discovery for offline scenarios.
folmar··on Show HN: A personal YouTube frontend based on yt-dlp
I use h264ify plugin and didn't see performance issues for playback. The UI depends on test group you go into, but only the first load is really terrible.
folmar··on Internet shutdowns at record high in Africa as access 'weaponised'
Briar does just that
folmar··on Microsoft begins turning off uBlock Origin and other extensions in Edge
By default Google gets not only search but everything entered into the address bar (for "suggestions").
folmar··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
If you are in EU, request your data be redacted.
folmar··on Docker limits unauthenticated pulls to 10/HR/IP from Docker Hub, from March 1
harbor should have enough features and is popular/rising, otherwise Artifactory will do everything you imagine but is quite heavy both on resources and configuration.
folmar··on I Wrote a WebAssembly VM in C
Squeak Smalltalk is 53 MB on Windows (excluding sources). 48 MB of that is the image with UI framework and so on, but it's not immediately easy to say which library/ui parts are core.
