folkrav··on No Data Centers in My Backyard
“Humming quietly”? Really? Humming, yeah, sure, but ask the people living next door how quiet they are.
folkrav··on LLMs reward expertise
They probably mean static site, in the sense of static front end, no backend.
folkrav··on How to Exist
I didn’t make the comparison in the first place.
folkrav··on On the non-use of AI in my writing process
> In the background of what looks like a Panglossian techno-optimist novel, horrible things are happening. Most of humanity is wiped out, then arbitrarily resurrected in mutilated form by the Vile Offspring. Capitalism eats everything then the logic of competition pushes it so far that merely human entities can no longer compete; we're a fat, slow-moving, tasty resource – like the dodo. Our narrative perspective, Aineko, is not a talking cat: it's a vastly superintelligent AI, coolly calculating, that has worked out that human beings are more easily manipulated if they think they're dealing with a furry toy. The cat body is a sock puppet wielded by an abusive monster. https://www.antipope.org/charlie/blog-static/2013/05/crib-sh...

Regardless of believing in the “singularity” or not, please explain how this sounds utopian in the slightest without borderline (if not literal) sociopathic anti-human worldviews.

Weird flex.

Last I checked, restaurants actually do run on razor thin margins. A fraction of the costs is food - IIRC on average about a third. Most of it is rent (typically very high in places where you’d have foot traffic) and labor (pretty labor intensive sector for a given output).
folkrav··on Ten Ways NAS Is Getting Enshitified
I run some light services on my NAS cause well, in the end, the distinction in naming is arbitrary at best, it’s a computer, and I use it for computer things. In an ideal world where I can afford separate purpose-built machines for everything, I’ll have a storage-only NAS, but it’s a computer I have that also happens to have many hard drive bays. Being able to service my own machines shouldn’t be all that surprising either.
folkrav··on Our position on open-weights models
The DoW head sees half of his own country’s population as enemies, Islam as an evil religion of hate, and the work he does as striking down the enemies of God. I heavily doubt that this man gives a single thought to children of muslims.
folkrav··on Show HN: Physically accurate black hole you can put in your room
From an information theory perspective, isn’t a representation by definition a simplification?
folkrav··on Government orders GitHub to remove Bluetooth-based chat app Bitchat: Jack Dorsey
It’s a “Parks and Recreations” reference.
folkrav··on My security camera shipped a GitHub admin token in its login page
There’s some irony to security not being a priority for security cameras. Different kind of security I know, but still.
folkrav··on Codex Resets
Orrrr... He could just as well click the link he has bookmarked already, and see it with his own eyes, without the token use to report on his token use.

folkrav··on How GitHub gave every repository a durable owner
I haven't had to do first aid training in while, but even the first time I had to as a teenager working in camps almost 20 years ago, this was a thing they drilled in our heads.
folkrav··on What AI did to stackoverflow in a graph
There is a pretty sharp acceleration of that decline around 2022/2023.
folkrav··on Show HN: IKEA Complexity Index
If an ALEX drawer unit takes them over an hour and a half to build, IMHO they're doing something wrong. Many others on that list seem suspiciously high (the BRIMNES comes to mind). Curious how it came up with those values.
folkrav··on VulnHunter: Capital One's agentic AI code security tool
We also have to stop treating any criticism of some practices surrounding AI adoption like a rejection of the technology.
folkrav··on LM Studio Bionic: the AI agent for open models
Sure. I still don't think it's particularly controversial to acknowledge that the two don't necessarily align either, and that neither really incentivizes the other.

Less unanimous and debatable, but many would say they more often do not align than the opposite.

folkrav··on Teen hackers who live streamed cyber-attack on TfL jailed
Behavior being different online than in real life is not limited to kids either. Nobody on Facebook is meaner than a 60-something year old lady with a wall full of cat pictures and minion memes. I genuinely doubt that half of them would hold the same discourse face to face.
folkrav··on The zero-cost fallacy: open-source software in the agentic era
What puzzles me is, what matters is context. Most of the context would be the specific model I used and its training data, the result of tool calls, and the model's inner monologue/thinking (which is increasingly getting encrypted by frontier models). My prompts are a tiny sliver of that, and most of them dependended on the actual answers I was getting from the model in the middle of the whole process. Or the result of handoffs, or internal compactions.

What's the value of getting all my prompts if the rest of the equation is unknowable? Unless you mean the value is in the full agent log, but even then, frontier models and harnesses would still be hiding a major part of the equation from us.

folkrav··on Accretive Editing
For what it's worth, it's legitimately the first time I see this word online used in this context, despite browsing this site and a handful of other sources on tech news pretty much every single day.
folkrav··on The zero-cost fallacy: open-source software in the agentic era
My latest feature was an overarching change across 4 different stacks, about a full work day of going back and forth iterating on different designs, generating workarounds for stack/language specific quirks and the business' usage patterns. Multiple fresh agent sessions, review passes, exploratory work with subagents, etc. "The prompt(s) that generated the change" in that context is multiple hours of discussion, Q&A, refactoring and feedback. Is that really the value, pages and pages of reactive prompting?
folkrav··on Resetting Xbox
To me that was kind of the point of the story - people that entirely forgot why they ever did any of the things they did, their kid included, slowly realizing it was their damn fault all along.
folkrav··on Resetting Xbox
Some spots were a bit hard with Split Fiction too. There is a third-person shooter styled section my wife got pretty frustrated with at one point. But the overall game was good enough that she got over it.
folkrav··on Resetting Xbox
Split Fiction is fantastic. My wife, about 0% gamer when rounded down, is still talking about it months later. I had a blast too - the game manages to be extremely fun and a decent challenge for both gamers and non-gamers alike. We'll be replaying it, but swapping characters next time.

When we played it, we had just finished It Takes Two, which was also great, but Split Fiction immediately dethroned it. I can't wait to see what Hazelight comes up with next.

folkrav··on It's not about physical vs. digital games, it's about ownership
Changing the verbiage would be better in that it would be honest, but I still find it absolutely despicable that the very concept of owning a game basically disappeared.

Tons of games people play do NOT have notable online features outside leaderboards, cosmetics or other inconsequential mechanics.
