fogzen··on Ask HN: What dev tools do you rely on that nobody talks about?
Efficiency is doing more with less. I'm not sure more tools is the path to productivity.

I'm not sure it counts as a dev tool, but I use Nushell and I'm always surprised at how few devs know about it.

fogzen··on Ask HN: What is your dev set up like?
- No IDEs (unfortunately they're all buggy performance hogs with input lag)

- Helix editor (no LSP, no plugins)

- Workmux for Git worktree and tmux automation

- Nushell and iTerm

- Claude Code for code generation

fogzen··on Tailscale's new macOS home
I don't see what this has to do with the notch. There's limited space in the menu bar. The overflow is hidden with or without the notch.

It is a bit weird that Apple hasn't provided a simple UI indicator that some icons are hidden. All that's needed is a dot with a tooltip that opens the settings to configure the menu icons.

fogzen··on Reinventing the pull request
I don’t want to reinvent the pull request. I want to commit to main like an adult.
fogzen··on Conductor raises $22M Series A
What's the pitch?
fogzen··on Anatomy of the .claude/ folder
I don't. I have Claude do all my PR reviews, running in a daily loop in the morning. The truth is an LLM is better at code review than the average programmer.

I'm a senior engineer who has been shipping code since before GitHub and PR reviews was a thing. Thankfully LLMs have freed me from being asked to read other people's shit code for hours every day.

fogzen··on Ask HN: At what point you decided to pursue your startup fulltime?
Thanks for sharing your story.
fogzen··on Miscellanea: The War in Iran
> While i wouldn't bet money on it, it seems at least possible that something similar could happen to the USA.

Fixed that for you.

fogzen··on Miscellanea: The War in Iran
Yeah who could have guessed electing a narcissistic moron surrounded by incompetent clowns would result in dumb moves?
fogzen··on Miscellanea: The War in Iran
Delusional. The GCC has only 40,000 troops.
fogzen··on Tell HN: Your AI startup is a Next.js page, OpenAI_API_KEY, & Stripe invoice
So what? Milk the VCs dry while you can. It's probably easier to raise $500k for your AI vaporware than it is to get a decent job.
fogzen··on Push events into a running session with channels
Tailscale + tmux + Moshi. You're welcome.
fogzen··on Oil and gas prices jump after Iran and Israel attack gasfields
I forgot only Republicans are allowed to do that.
fogzen··on How to defer US taxes
You can’t legally reclassify all your expenses as reinvestment. The IRS will determine what is actually an expenditure, and there are rules around it.
fogzen··on Oil and gas prices jump after Iran and Israel attack gasfields
Good. I hope gas becomes so unaffordable the US economy collapses. Maybe they'll lose some weight and it'll improve the healthcare situation.
fogzen··on Austin’s surge of new housing construction drove down rents
It's possible to build more housing and have rent control. Rent control is the only thing allowing working class families to live a dignified life in the USA's most desirable cities. Land value tax and social housing are simply not politically feasible – rent control is.
fogzen··on Rob Pike’s Rules of Programming (1989)
Rule 5 should be rule 1.
fogzen··on “Design me a highly resilient database”
What answer are you looking for?
fogzen··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (March 2026)
Sounds interesting. I'd like to know more. Can you share a paper or the space emulator?
fogzen··on Ask HN: Would you use a job board where every listing is verified?
I want a job board that can filter companies like ATS filters candidates. I want to know salary, benefits, equity comp, tech stack, and workflow practices like CI, test suite time, test coverage, meetings per week, etc.
fogzen··on Filesystems Are Having a Moment
Does this really have to do with file systems? Replacing RAG/context stuffing with tool calls for data access seems like the actual change. Whether the tool call is backed by a file system or DB or whatever shouldn’t matter, right?
fogzen··on Ask HN: How are you all staying sane?
Stop consuming news media. It's actually that simple.
fogzen··on Don't become an engineering manager
Yeah. There's always such a lack of realpolitik in these discussions. They turn into endless bike shedding about what a manager is supposed to do according to some ideology of management, rather than the reality of the decisions managers are actually in control of and their actual tangible outputs.
fogzen··on The Pentagon threatens Anthropic
I can't help but compare what happened with nuclear physics to what will happen with ASI/AGI. We could have used nuclear energy to provide abundant, clean energy. Instead we used it for warfare to kill people. All the of the brightest minds and frontier technology was directed towards killing people.

We could use AI for medical advances and to create a communist utopia without serfdom. But it's already looking like we're getting killer robots and more oppression.

Hope I'm thinking about this wrong. I fear very soon the government will begin nationalizing AI resources and forcing AI researchers to direct their efforts towards weapons systems. Similar to what happened in physics. "We have to be first to have autonomous robot armies" basically.

fogzen··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
Curious… why not just use a workflow engine like n8n? Seems most people are just creating workflows but without any deterministic execution.
fogzen··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
Why use OpenClaw vs n8n with LLM to describe the workflow? In other words, if I can setup a Zapier/n8n workflow with natural language, why would I want to use OpenClaw?

Nondeterministic execution doesn’t sound great for stringing together tool calls.

fogzen··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
It’s basically cron + LLMs + memory connected to their discord or WhatsApp to control remotely. A persistent personal agent that just does stuff for you. People have been running on their own machines letting the LLM access their shell, browser, whatever.
fogzen··on Claws are now a new layer on top of LLM agents
What I don’t get: If it’s just a workflow engine why even use LLM for anything but a natural language interface to workflows? In other words, if I can setup a Zapier/n8n workflow with natural language, why would I want to use OpenClaw?

Nondeterministic execution doesn’t sound great for stringing together tool calls.

fogzen··on AI made coding more enjoyable
Not going to last long though, at least not professionally. AI will do the spec and architecture too. The LLM will do the entire pipeline between customer or market research to deployment. This is already possible with bug fixes pretty much. And many features too depending on the business.
fogzen··on Twitter(X) Is Down
Because many people (including high profile CEOs and VCs) are social media and X addicts. They spend literally all waking hours interacting with it.
