fogzen··on You don't need Scrum, you just need to do Kanban right (2022)
As someone who runs a software agency, kanban sounds like nonsense.

If you don’t know exactly what you’re doing, for whom, by when, you fail to meet expectations by delivering the wrong thing by the wrong time.

There is design & estimation, planning, development, and evaluation phases. End of story. It doesn’t matter what you call those phases. If you don’t do design and estimation, you have no idea what you’re building or any metric for success. If you don’t do planning you have no schedule for delivering it.

“I’ll do this feature as defined by a two sentence ticket whenever I complete it” is incompetent and reckless. It’s idiotic. I’ve seen many companies operate this way, and they are constantly delivering the wrong thing by the wrong time (particularly VC-backed startups).

fogzen··on The businessman and the fisherman (1963)
Love what you do and you’ll never work a day in your life.

Let’s be honest: fishing in the USA is a tough full time job, even if you love it. You can’t relax by the ocean catching a few fish to pay rent and support your family.

fogzen··on Ask HN: Books that helped you become a better person?
Second this. It pairs really well with “How to win friends and influence people”. These two books leveled up my interpersonal communication 1000x
fogzen··on Htmx Is the Future
Thanks! I feel like these discussions would be so much more fruitful if they were centered around dissecting real products.
fogzen··on Bluesky's AT Protocol - Federation Architecture Overview
Imagine if every time there was an article about ice cream people had to comment that they don’t like ice cream.
fogzen··on Htmx Is the Future
You touch on something that bugs me about these discussions: Lack of proof. Show me the web app with killer UX developed with htmx. Show me the product of the tools and processes being advocated.
fogzen··on Htmx Is the Future
Server-side apps cannot provide optimistic UI. No matter how you feel about it, they are limited in this capability compared to client-side apps. The user doesn’t care about the technology. For example, imagine a todo app that shows a new todo immediately. Or form validations that happen as soon as data is entered. That’s a superior experience to waiting on the server to continue interaction. Whether that’s harder to engineer is irrelevant to the user. We should be striving for the best possible user experience, not what we as engineers personally find easy or comfortable.

HTMX is cool. HTMX may fit your needs. But it’s not enough for providing the best possible user experience.

fogzen··on America’s first high-volume ‘PFAS Annihilator’ is up and running in W. Michigan
You can use shellac-finished wooden plates and bowls. Biodegradable, natural, doesn’t break, lightweight, carbon-neutral material.
fogzen··on Ask HN: Would you pay for a verified-only social network?
Yes, but no. Yes I will pay to verify my identity. But no, I want to control my identity: My own domain. My email is “verified” (I own the DNS) but I can move to another provider while keeping my email. Public key identities work the same way (like what Bluesky does).

Free + ads is a great business model. It works. There’s a reason all major consumer platforms work that way. The world, in general, is not ideologically hungup about ads like HN is. Also notice that most of HN‘s rhetoric doesn’t match their actions, most are using popular social media anyway.

fogzen··on Highly opinionated SQL schema design that's easy to start with and scales well
I personally think it’s safer to enforce data constraints in application code, because “bad” data won’t break it. Putting the constraints in the database means your application is coupled to whatever database you use. Worse, because databases only offer a small set of constraints, it’s often the case that constraints are split between the database and application code. You have “validations” in both the application code and database definitions, and data must be checked/transformed anyway whenever it is marshaled to and from the database. Constraints in the database are effectively implicit, living in a set of migrations or often not part of any source control.

EAV indexing is much easier, because EAV is naturally represented as a tree. The whole database is the index. You only have four universal indexes that cover every query: EAV, AEV, AVE, and VAE. The mutual likes example above is covered by these indexes. And you never had to worry about it!

See Datomic for real world example of an EAV architecture.

fogzen··on Engineers develop water filtration that removes “forever chemicals”
Relatively ineffective according to what? The study linked in another comment shows a simple Brita carbon faucet filter being very effective.
fogzen··on Ask HN: How do you do laundry?
Same advice applies. Most people have an unnecessary amount of clothing which makes laundry a big job.

You need one set of sheets. But you only need to wash once every 2-4 weeks if you shower before bed. If you do gym and sport, you only need one pair of shorts and jersey. With daily sport, that’s only two outfits to hand wash per day - a quick job.

If you have multiple kids, sure, you might want a washing machine. With minimal clothing you should only need to do one load. Folding can be avoided by hanging clothes.

Alternatively, you could take the opposite route. Have 15-30 outfits and multiple sets of sheets, and only do a big laundry session once per month ;)

fogzen··on Encrypted DMs and other DM upgrades rolling out this week
It works more or less like it did before. The media is mostly histrionics, as usual.
fogzen··on Ask HN: How do you effectively manage technical debt in fast-paced environments?
Don’t create it. Use battle-tested approaches and frameworks that scale. Do quality work, at a sustainable pace.
fogzen··on Ask HN: How do you do laundry?
Reduce the laundry you need to do. I only own three outfits. Hand washing a single outfit every day takes less than 10 minutes. Costs nothing. Hang dry. No folding.
fogzen··on Ask HN: Are there any good guides on how to start a startup?
Sell something first. Don’t register a business or get a separate bank account before demonstrating sales. I say that from experience. Nothing feels worse than paying taxes and fees for losing money :)
fogzen··on Highly opinionated SQL schema design that's easy to start with and scales well
SELECT count(likes_a) FROM facts as likes_a, facts as likes_b WHERE likes_a.attribute = ‘like’ AND likes_b.attribute = ‘like’ AND likes_a.value = likes_b.value AND likes_a.entity_id != likes_b.entity_id AND likes_b.entity_id = 123
fogzen··on Highly opinionated SQL schema design that's easy to start with and scales well
Why normalize? Go even further and use a universal relation / Entity-Attribute-Value pattern. One table with columns entity_id, type = assert|retract, key, value

Essentially, use SQL as an immutable key-value store and use views for queries.

fogzen··on Modern Transactional Stack
VC discovers transaction logs. Someone tell A16Z about Datomic.
fogzen··on Ask HN: Any Domain Registrars That Aren't Crap?
Porkbun! Low prices, monthly deals, great support, a funny newsletter, and free parking and domain sale pages.

Get on the bun!

fogzen··on Ask HN: HTML actions that replace JavaScript/CSS?
The datalist element, which can be used for browser native autocomplete of input options https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/da...
fogzen··on Mini-States and Micro-Sovereignty: Democracies in East Central Europe, 1918–1923
Interesting. Scale is an often overlooked aspect of politics. On this point, I highly recommend “The Breakdown of Nations” by Leopold Kohr, which is an entire treatise on the (negative) effects of size on nations.
fogzen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
“In the case of a taxpayer’s specified research or experimental expenditures for any taxable year” …

Seems pretty obvious to me that the section only applies to what is claimed as R&E. Software development doesn’t have to be claimed as R&E, but if it is, now it unambiguously qualifies.

fogzen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
I don’t think the law says all software development has to be part of a mandatory R&E credit.

It says “For the purposes of this section…”, so it doesn’t apply if you’re not claiming R&E credit.

fogzen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
Yup. Exactly. And from that perspective this is actually a good thing, because now you don’t have to worry about whether software development qualifies as R&E.
fogzen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
It means before you may have had to justify whether software development qualified as R&E, now you don’t. It unambiguously qualifies, if you’re claiming it as R&E. And unlike before, R&E must now be amortized.

But AFAIK you don’t need to claim it as R&E. That everyone has to claim all software development as “research and experimental expenditure” seems completely unfounded and a misunderstanding.

fogzen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
Is it? "In the case of a taxpayer’s specified research or experimental expenditures for any taxable year—" is pretty clear. That means what someone wants to claim as research and experimental expenditures. "For the purposes of this section" also seems pretty clear. If you want to claim software development as R&E, it unambiguously qualifies. And now all R&E must be amortized.

I am not a tax expert, but it doesn't seem like there's any reason you have to claim software development as R&E.

fogzen··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
What about software agencies/consultancies? Their salaries would not be capex right? They don’t own the software, they just develop it to spec and sell the development. Their client would be the one to claim R&E right?

fogzen··on Yeah, about that active comeback...
Inflation adjusted return would be around $80,000, worse if you scope inflation to real estate and healthcare.
