fogzen··on OpenAI should build Slack
That has nothing to do with federation. A Gmail user can talk to an Outlook user. A Slack user cannot talk to a Teams user.

Email is only federated because it was used before it was commercialized. If companies could monopolize email they would. The solution here is government regulation requiring interconnection, like we got with phones and text messaging.

fogzen··on I'm not worried about AI job loss
Yes, doomerism is a symptom of severe doomscrolling addiction. All the people who talk like this spend all day on X. They sound like delusional drug addicts TBH.
fogzen··on I'm not worried about AI job loss
You don’t spend all your time doomscrolling X? :) Glad to know there’s others out there.
fogzen··on I'm not worried about AI job loss
I’ve noticed most of the people involved with AI doomerism are social media (X) addicts. Same with a lot of CEOs and VCs. To be honest they don’t sound mentally healthy and somewhat delusional.
fogzen··on Ask HN: Better hardware means OpenAI, Anthropic, etc. are doomed in the future?
They won't survive. AI-as-a-service for frontier models will be relegated to military and research – if that. We're already at diminishing returns on model improvements. Latest improvements are on surrounding architecture, harnesses, agent systems, etc. Consumer hardware will be running the equivalent of ChatGPT 5.2 and IMO most interaction with personal computing devices will be done via natural language LLM personal assistants.

Maybe it takes a bit longer than 5 years but that's where we're going. Already the only reason you're not interacting via personal assistant for everything isn't really LLM capability but the lack of tooling.

fogzen··on Skip the Tips: A game to select "No Tip" but dark patterns try to stop you
It should be illegal to solicit tips when asking for payment.
fogzen··on How to make a living as an artist
Help me understand… he makes a full time living getting people to pay him to paint murals of honeybears? What is he selling, exactly?

His store is literally just the same image of a generic honeybear… is he selling $10k plus a month of that same honeybear print?

fogzen··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (February 2026)
I'd love something like that, with the added ability to basically split the margin bucket into multiple buckets (one for me, one for the wife).

The main issue I've had with budgeting apps continues to be pulling in up-to-date transaction data, which is necessary to know how much I can spend right now. There always seems to be problems with the data syncing. Apple Card is the worst, as you can only pull transactions via wallet on device.

I wish we could just use a single bank account at the Fed. The banking network is absolutely shit and there's basically a 1% tax on everything that goes to the rich for no good reason.

Budgeting was soooo much easier with cash – it's maddening all the data is there for real-time personal finance but it can't be accessed.

fogzen··on The AI boom is causing shortages everywhere else
It's incredibly sad and depressing. We could be building green energy, parks, public transit, education, healthcare.
fogzen··on Ask HN: Has your whole engineering team gone big into AI coding? How's it going?
100% of the team (14 engineers) is using Claude Code for everything. Anecdotally it feels like velocity is 10%-20% faster. Objectively I have no idea if velocity is faster – because management is inept and does not actually track this. The most noticeable thing is test coverage has greatly improved. Every PR ships with lots of tests, whereas before we used AI we had little to no test coverage since it was just too time consuming.
fogzen··on Flock CEO calls Deflock a “terrorist organization” (2025) [video]
"Terrorism" has become everything the critics of The Patriot Act and post-9/11 rhetoric warned about.
fogzen··on Claude is a space to think
Get back to us when you’re profitable.
fogzen··on FBI couldn't get into WaPo reporter's iPhone because Lockdown Mode enabled
Even with that option set to "Immediately" you can still use Touch ID after locking.
fogzen··on Claude is a space to think
“Ideally” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here.
fogzen··on AI is killing B2B SaaS
Having worked in enterprise B2B SaaS for a long time, almost every feature I built could have been a simple spreadsheet or some emails. So I'm highly skeptical AI is going to change anything.

Enterprise sales basically works like this: A non-technical sales team aggressively promises everything to win a deal to a non-technical procurement or exec team. When the deal is won, the SaaS sales team tells engineers "go build this" regardless of how stupid it is. And the customer tells their employees "you now have to use this SaaS" regardless of whether it makes sense.

fogzen··on FBI couldn't get into WaPo reporter's iPhone because Lockdown Mode enabled
In case anyone is wondering: In newer versions of MacOS, the user must log out to require a password. Locking screen no longer requires password if Touch ID is enabled.
fogzen··on Y Combinator will let founders receive funds in stablecoins
“Stablecoins is one of the key pillars for us,” Dalal said, referring to one of the areas where Y Combinator would like to see more startup ideas. “So we just want to live and breathe that as well.”

I asked ChatGPT for an honest translation:

“We’re actively trying to manufacture demand and legitimacy for stablecoins by forcing them into the startup supply chain.”

fogzen··on Ask HN: Have you been fired because of AI?
No, but every day I have to listen to my insufferable manager tell us we have to use whatever AI tool is trending on X.

If I could quote this stupid industry I would.

fogzen··on Surely the crash of the US economy has to be soon
Gold has crashed with previous economic crashes. In 2008 it fell 30%, silver fell by 50%.
fogzen··on Code is cheap. Show me the talk
Artisanal clothing is functionally equivalent to mass-produced clothing, but more expensive.

Much of contemporary software is functionally equivalent but more expensive to run and produce than previous generations. Chat, project management, document editing, online stores… all seem to have gotten more expensive to produce and run with little to no gain in functionality.

Complexity in software production and tooling keeps increasing yet functionally software is more or less the same as 20 years ago (obv. excluding advancements depending on hardware like video, 3D rendering, LLMs, etc.

fogzen··on OpenClaw – Moltbot Renamed Again
Can you describe the architecture a bit? You setup a server that runs the app, the app's interface is Slack, and that calls out to ChatGPT or something using locally built tool calls?

Was thinking of setting up something like this and was kind of surprised nothing simple seems to exist already. Actually incredibly surprising this isn't something offered by OpenAI.

fogzen··on Moltbook is the most interesting place on the internet right now
Is there a similar tool which just requires confirmation/permission from me to execute every action?

I'm imagining I get a notification asking me to proceed/confirm with whatever next action, like Claude Code?

Basically I want to just automate my job. I go about my day and get notifications confirming responses to Slack messages, opening PRs, etc.

fogzen··on Amazon cuts 16k jobs
Because in the world people currently live in, a small class of people own the means of production and the land you stand on, and everyone else has to have a job to access all of the necessities to live. Eliminating jobs means, quite literally, eliminating people's livelihood.

And that same class of people who own everything would rather kill everyone else and also destroy the planet than give up their position or allow any of the socioeconomic changes necessary to change the distribution of wealth.

fogzen··on Dole Kemp 96 Web Site
It goes further back than 50 years for sure. Was small-government rhetoric embraced by the whole party that far back though? Seems to me it wasn't embraced by the whole party until after Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. I think it really got going after the New Deal as Republicans started framing their opposition to helping the working class in terms of small government and states rights.
fogzen··on Dole Kemp 96 Web Site
Are you from the US? It’s been a centerpiece of Republican propaganda for 50 years. It’s a total lie though.
fogzen··on Management as AI superpower: Thriving in a world of agentic AI
The linked tweets seem like exaggerations or hyperbole. "I shipped 22 PRs yesterday, and 27 the day before" – huh? Are these PRs just one-liner copy changes or something? Even if you're not coding, you have to at least be verifying the changes right? At 15min to run CI and deploy, that's 5.5 hours spent just for changes to go into production. Spending just 15minutes to review and verify and 15minutes to merge and deploy 22 changes is 11 hours, no breaks, no meals. Smells like bullshit to me.

fogzen··on Things I've learned in my 10 years as an engineering manager
Because every time I've done something of my own initiative, one of three things happens:

1/ I'm punished or reprimanded for doing something that my time wasn't explicitly scheduled for. This comes from managers.

2/ Nobody cares and I'm now further behind on the things I committed to.

3/ People care, are happy I took the initiative, but I'm not materially rewarded in any way. At worst, I'm given more work.

In all cases I am no better off. I just don't do it anymore. Employers don't want employee autonomy, so they don't get employee autonomy. Employers only want to give paychecks not profits, so they get employees who only want paychecks.

fogzen··on How I estimate work
I think because capitalist employment is inherently adversarial. If employers (and managers) reveal the time budget, employees may take advantage and reduce output to expand to fill the deadline. Tight schedules squeeze employees, so hiding the real time constraint allows management to exert pressure by adjusting the deadline. Employees that realize the bluff and ignore fake schedule pressure can be identified, marginalized, and eliminated.

Avoiding this degrading game is half the reason I preferred contracting.
