fnordfnordfnord··on Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota and VW
You'd rather wait for Toyota of all people? Toyota is infamous for the bad quality of their software/firmware. Not that I'd expect much better from other established car makers.
fnordfnordfnord··on Signal is finally bringing its secure messaging to the masses
I don't see it. I'm using Version 1.9.9
fnordfnordfnord··on Signal is finally bringing its secure messaging to the masses
I just checked. If it has, I can't see how to do it.
fnordfnordfnord··on Signal is finally bringing its secure messaging to the masses
Isn't the desktop app a recent development? Or maybe I only recently discovered it.

Airlines don't care about our comfort. They would ship us in intermodal Connex boxes if they could.

So, no then.

>It takes 8 years of working experience before you are even allowed to take a Master Plumbing test... and we aren't stupid people. There is A lot know.

Never said plumbers were stupid. But we're talking about replacing an existing fixture with a functionally identical replacement. If you try to tell me that needs a licensed Master plumber, I'll know exactly what your motives are.

Effective regulation might be okay. Then maybe people like former Dr. Christopher Duntsch wouldn't be able to practice for years, killing and maiming dozens of patients.
fnordfnordfnord··on Undercover Cops Hired 118 Handymen, Then Arrested Them for Not Having Licenses
>The reason is because although it is not technically difficult to "unhook a toliet" as you say it is even easier (especially now with the advent of Home Depot and Amazon selling all manner of "plumbing contraptions") to inadverntly create a potential cross conection.

Please tell us how one can screw up hooking up a toilet so badly as to create a cross connection. It's not easy to confuse a 3" or better closet flange with a 3/8" compression fitting, and it would be pretty obvious to anyone who tried it.

fnordfnordfnord··on Undercover Cops Hired 118 Handymen, Then Arrested Them for Not Having Licenses
No. There's some sort of legal sophistry that helps them get away with it, and even if there weren't there's always the fall back of qualified immunity.
fnordfnordfnord··on Indiana man charged with theft for removing police tracking device from car
>All the police had to do was knock on his door and ask for it back. If he refused, that's grounds for theft.

No, it's not. For all the police knew, as you say, it could have fallen off on its own. Definitely not PC.

fnordfnordfnord··on Indiana man charged with theft for removing police tracking device from car
> even though the judiciary is meant to be a check on the power of the executive.

Yeah, that hasn't really been working out for us.

fnordfnordfnord··on Farm country feeds America, but try buying groceries there
Can confirm, live in a rural farming/ranching area. Drive past farms (vegetable, grass, ornamental, and commodity) every day. Local grocery store trucks produce in from all over the country. The local grocery stores (Wal Mart, HEB) are also higher priced than even their stores in the nearby suburban area. We drive weekly to Aldi for most of our groceries, or to the bigger, nicer HEB with better food. The local farmer's market is overpriced trash / antiques and junk. We do have a local friend that gives/sells/trades eggs with us though.

Back when I was faculty at a .edu, I installed this game in my student labs and it got a lot of action, despite the availability of much newer games.

If they don't have any money to spend on infrastructure, then what have they been using to pay dividends to investors?
fnordfnordfnord··on Secretive military spaceplane lands in Florida after record-long orbital flight
More of everything, especially guns.

fnordfnordfnord··on Massachusetts Sues Exxon over Climate Change, Accusing the Oil Giant of Fraud
>It's not a few bits of plastic.

That's what the oil contributed.

>It was the difference between whether my son who was born 10 weeks to early would both survive

Appreciated, but oil is simply not a necessary component for that to happen. It may be currently the most convenient but not necessary.

fnordfnordfnord··on 1.5M Packages a Day Bring Chaos to NYC Streets
People could use it too if they'd just fight every traffic ticket.
fnordfnordfnord··on Massachusetts Sues Exxon over Climate Change, Accusing the Oil Giant of Fraud
The jury is still out on that one, no? As far as I know, the Sacklers et al remain free to walk the earth, and rich as ever.
fnordfnordfnord··on Massachusetts Sues Exxon over Climate Change, Accusing the Oil Giant of Fraud
Yeah, a few bits of plastic, and some energy to power it. I got that.
fnordfnordfnord··on Ban Facial Recognition at Festivals
>Surveillance aside, since when has it been a human right to attend a festival in a country you are not allowed to reside in?

Forgetting about illegal immigrants for a moment, are you saying that visitors to some country shouldn't be allowed at festivals? What have you got against tourism?

There's no right to visit attractions, but there ought to be a right to privacy, and I'd personally prefer a few illegals get to unjustly enjoy themselves over the invasive panopticon required to prevent that.

fnordfnordfnord··on Massachusetts Sues Exxon over Climate Change, Accusing the Oil Giant of Fraud
It's not polite.
fnordfnordfnord··on Massachusetts Sues Exxon over Climate Change, Accusing the Oil Giant of Fraud
Oil saves more lives than it kills

Maybe. That alone does not mean we should continue to use oil when alternatives exist.

>and it makes lives better for all of us.

No, it does not. There are many impoverished communities on the planet who reap relatively little or no benefit from oil use and suffer disproportionate burdens from its production and use, example: Africans.

> You can't just take the negatives and ignore all the positives.

You can't just ignore the negatives, or the evolution of the circumstances.

> the ability to keep an incubator running let alone the materials for creating

Oil is useful for creating and running an incubator, or any number of modern inventions, but is definitely not necessary for all of those things.

fnordfnordfnord··on Exxon accurately predicted 2019's climate change and CO2 emission in 1982
>I’m just sceptical that someone in 1982 made accurate predictions of 2019. And all points in between? Without anyone noticing?

The Exxon scientists' predictions were proprietary company information at the time. Exxon didn't publish this information, they used it to their advantage.

fnordfnordfnord··on Exxon accurately predicted 2019's climate change and CO2 emission in 1982
And precisely!
fnordfnordfnord··on Traffic lights worldwide set to change after a Swedish engineer saw red
That is totally unreasonable, especially given the liberty at which companies and people use and misuse the word "engineer" today.
fnordfnordfnord··on Traffic lights worldwide set to change after a Swedish engineer saw red
>When Järlström brought the issue to the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying, the state board opened an investigation in 2015 and fined him $500 the following year for practicing engineering without a professional license.

What a bunch of pricks. Vogons couldn't have done any worse than the Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying.
