fncivivue7··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
You're arguing that he shouldn't, only you have no leverage to do so.
fncivivue7··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
"eratic Elon twitter" - ignoring the news, what exactly is erattic about twitter right now? Doesn't it basically work exactly the same?
fncivivue7··on Promotion of alternative social platforms policy
Meh, private company. He can do whatever he wants. Don't like it? Leave.
fncivivue7··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
> I don't want to be that person that's not reachable but more and more, I'm thinking about closing Slack and opening it 2-3x a day.

What's wrong with this?

Also, learn to mute channels we have thousands too, I'm in about 20-50 at a given time between pruning. Out of those I only keep important, low noise channels unmuted.

fncivivue7··on A thin gold layer could be the secret to glasses that don't fog
> Even a crappy mask can still give others some protection from your coughs & sneezes.

The evidence is incredibly clear on this. It doesn't. No mask wearing has resulted in less COVID transmission on any population around the world.

N95 masks are the only things that work - but they don't fog your glasses.

fncivivue7··on A thin gold layer could be the secret to glasses that don't fog
So why do we need gold lenses?

I feel like a lot of the kneejerk responses here are failing to read the context of my comment here correctly.

fncivivue7··on SvelteKit 1.0
We had to support ie.
fncivivue7··on Ask HN: If I get locked out of everything, please try to help me
We're talking about hackers getting access to users accounts, that's not a Google problem, that's an everyone problem.
fncivivue7··on Facebook tracking is illegal in Europe
Completely? Of course not. On the grounds mentioned above? Yes, of course.

Stating comparisons isn't hyperbole just because you don't like the comparison. Neither is it a conspiracy theory. Five eyes shitfuckery is extremely well documented.

fncivivue7··on The various scripts I use to back up my home computers using SSH and rsync
Sounds like you want Borg

https://borgbackup.readthedocs.io/en/stable/

My two 80% full 1tb laptops and 1tb desktop backup to around 300-400G after dedupe and compression. Currently have around 12tb of backups stored in that 300G.

Incremental backups run in about 5 mins even against the spinning disk's they're stored on.

fncivivue7··on Facebook tracking is illegal in Europe
Hyperbole requires intent and exaggeration, can you point out either? I'm not seeing it.

It's also 100% on topic. You not liking the discussion doesn't change that.

fncivivue7··on It’s not Tourette’s but a new type of mass sociogenic illness
I've been starting to think the bible and other religions have their place due to this. Plot people on a bell curve, that's a lot of people that can't grasp basic nuance and critical reasoning.
fncivivue7··on PFC bans are going to change waterproof garments
And thank fuck for that. DWR is disgusting, horrible stuff.

Stop using DWR. Buy frogtoggs or Columbia outdry and leave this stuff behind.

Outdry is lighter stronger, doesn't wear off after three outings, and the material breathes better than a wetted out goretex jacket ever will.

Unless you're in snow, goretex is next to useless.

fncivivue7··on Placing #1 in Advent of Code with GPT-3
Motivation.
fncivivue7··on It’s Time for ‘Maximum Viable Product’
It's not the only cause but empire building[1] is a very real phenomenon. Maximum viable features is a very interesting concept but it's just that, a concept, nobody says you have to stick to it, it can just be a tool in your toolbox to limit scope creep. One thing I don't have too many of is tools to limit scope.

> the punchline is that they're all using a different 20%.

You could try creating different products.

fncivivue7··on 'Bin chickens' learned to wash poisonous cane toads
The most interesting thing about bin chickens to me is how they got their name.

They never used to bother Sydney very much until one bird, yes one, was brought into the city on a boat. It managed to get back to it's home land, the next year, hundreds of them migrated into the city and raided the abundant food available in the cities bins.

These aren't stupid birds, they're intelligent and communicate with their peers about food availability.

fncivivue7··on A Dad Took Photos of His Kid for the Doctor. Google Flagged Him as a Criminal
I dunno, cloud or no cloud there is an expectation of privacy. What they've done amounts to a warrantless fishing expedition and it should concern everyone.

The problem is, the alternative is this stuff runs rampant on their service, not something I'd want either.

So I understand their position, but their approach here is lacking.

fncivivue7··on Choosing Nim out of a crowded market for systems programming languages
Found this myself. Learning curve is steep. Still not there yet but once you get into it I can really see how more productive I am vs other languages.

Other languages just require a lot more trial and error to get them to do what you want. Rust, if it compiles, generally does what you expected.

It's not just type safety and the borrow checking either, it's the idioms, std lib, and other language design choices that lead on to improved devex in the wider ecosystem as a result.

I understand you can get the same features out of modern C++ now days but it's not just the features, it's everything that comes with it.

fncivivue7··on A Dad Took Photos of His Kid for the Doctor. Google Flagged Him as a Criminal
That's spin. The real reason is discussed near the end of the article.

They don't want to get into the business of deciding what is and isn't sexual imagery. Instead, it's easier to just ban people and forget about it.

It's the same type of behaviour and attitude that lead to damoore being fired. No room for ambiguity or nuance at Google. Everything can be decided by an algorithm.

fncivivue7··on A Dad Took Photos of His Kid for the Doctor. Google Flagged Him as a Criminal
This is why I pay extra for domains on gandi and avoid google owned TLDs. I also won't touch namecheap anymore for the same concerns just too much downside risk even if the chance is small.

It wouldn't take much for Google to turn this around, that's the really screwed up part. All the would have to do to regain trust is come out and admit their system did something wrong and provide recourse for resolution in these cases. Instead they just double down and hope people forget.

fncivivue7··on Cloudflare servers don't own IPs anymore so how do they connect to the internet?
Why are you assuming amplification attacks aren't a thing?

I think you're probably right about the spoofing but it comes off a little dismissive when the possibility of a site that queries other sites, could be tricked into doing something it shouldn't, is always going to be in the realm of a possibility.

fncivivue7··on Ask HN: Is it just me?
Pretty normal.

I joined a larger (tech) company a few years ago, best thing I've ever done. Instead of jumping companies I just jump teams.

Need to be productive to get the team switches but that's not too hard.

fncivivue7··on WikiLeaks is struggling to stay online as millions of documents disappear
Where have you been the last decade? Journos haven't been impartial since the sixties.
