fn42··on Show HN: I built a tool to manage and compare credit card rewards
Interesting idea, thanks for sharing.

Some feedback from using:

- It said to use amex blue cash for 3% back at costco, but costco only accepts visa

- It said to use amex blue cash for 3% back at harbor freight but this card only gets 1% at this store, the BofA customized cash rewards (added to my wallet) is the only card I have found that gives 3% back on home improvement stores

- It said to use amex blue cash for 3% back at BJ's, even though the BJ's rewards card is in my wallet which gives 5% back at this store

fn42··on Car thieves using tech disguised inside old Nokia phones and Bluetooth speakers
I remember figuring this out when I needed to buy a new key for my Audi and the dealer wanted $200 to program it. https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a8-s8-d2-platform-discussio... the software's available online, all you need to do is get access to the OBD port and you can make your car trust a new key!
fn42··on Automating heating with Home Assistant
I’m not sure if you are using the qualifier “good” to exclude the nest, but it can work on a two wire system (it can siphon enough power to work without making the relay close)
fn42··on How Do Insurance Companies Make Money
This has had a lot of names ;) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot_effect
fn42··on The Bloomberg Terminal, Explained
I was at a financial startup ~ 2012 and remember getting a couple of these to play with. They came in the form of 1U servers (HP I think) running RHEL5 that each needed a public IP that was open to bloomberg. I think the client app was windows only at that time, I wonder how much has changed
fn42··on Trump’s F.C.C. Pick Quickly Targets Net Neutrality Rules
The crux of it is that competition is necessary though. Do cable companies in the US have any competition? I'd argue they do not
fn42··on Debugging mechanism in Intel CPUs allows seizing control via USB port
It sounds like this is more or less equal to android's "ADB"?

> “There are several ways someone could do this. An attacker could change the BIOS configuration (for example, with a use of a Flash programmator) when they have physical access to the equipment during manufacturing, storage or usage.

It has to be specifically enabled (with physical access)

fn42··on Build your own hackable automated cat feeder for $20
I'm surprised to see this is the only comment mentioning leaving a bowl of food out 24/7. This is how it's done at every shelter I have volunteered at (and how I do it at home) - the cats should always have access to water and some form of food. The wet (canned) food is what you have to be more careful with because the cats will compete for it.
fn42··on A New Wireless Hack Can Unlock 100M Volkswagens
It's public if you poke around enough, I wrote up a little blog post: https://medium.com/@chairface/how-to-steal-an-audi-71d53cb5d...

you'll just need the contents of the 95040 eeprom on your ECU - you can dump it from the OBD2 port with various tools

fn42··on Apple unencrypts more of iOS 10 in Beta 2
I think it means Apple considers their secure enclave "secure"
fn42··on Google Calendar now uses machine learning to help you accomplish your goals
Maybe Google now uses machine learning to think up these products
fn42··on “Super Engine” may fundamentally change the way internal combustion engines work
actually it's the opposite, you could run a diesel car on gasoline if you wanted (not wise as diesel fuel is actually used as a lubricant in high pressure fuel pumps)
fn42··on A $2 photo from a California junk shop is the ‘holy grail of Western Americana’
"Hard drive from junk shop found to be from an old facebook server"

I do wonder how digital archiving will work in the future. Hopefully something better than "the archive.org volunteers decided to archive it"

fn42··on Ohm (YC S15) is a smarter, lighter car battery that works with your existing car
Not exactly -30 but I know this guy had some success with off the shelf caps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUXM1XuLUIs

There's a few other vids on this topic if you search through the channel

fn42··on Toyota's killer firmware: Bad design and its consequences (2013)
I'm not really qualified here (and if someone is please post) but I've been poking around with the ECU on my 2001 audi and it doesn't seem to have ECC memory either. A section of the AM29F800BB eeprom is used as random-access memory. It seems to stick a couple CRC bits in every line so maybe this is how they're doing it?
fn42··on BBC is down
Wow, main page 500s and pretty much everything else just fails to load. I wonder what bit the dust, you'd think a full-site failure like this would require a chain of bad things to happen!
fn42··on [dead]
It sounds more likely that the delete key was stuck
fn42··on FTDI driver kills fake FTDI FT232s
Thanks for the heads up, this will probably affect us car nerds too (I'm sure my cheapo KWP2000 cable has a fake FT232)
fn42··on Show HN: Breach – A modular browser built on Chromium and Node.js
I like this a lot, the module handling is excellent + certainly brings another level to browser extensions

dunno if anyone else had this problem but I had to manually set $CHROME_DEVEL_SANDBOX on arch

CHROME_DEVEL_SANDBOX=`locate chrome-sandbox` ./breach

fn42··on Can You Buy A License to Speed?
Yep, I thought this was general knowledge. Here in the northeast we have "PBA Cards" which can be given out by police to friends/family/donators that you are supposed to hand the officer with your license if you're pulled over.

Although to be honest I've found that just being nice (& maybe driving a real clean volvo) has gotten me out of a speeding ticket every time I've been pulled over
