flying_sheep··on Facebook's role in Capitol protest larger than previously thought
This Democrats vs Republicans story can go down to some low-level stuff. Some of the people "won" in recent decades. They typically live in city, having higher income, enjoying good life and the new technologies. And they have the view points that the others have never had.

Let's say, people in cities are more willing to use EV car. People in small city / rural area are less motivated because of weaker infrastructure. This is unfair to ask the people in small city to make this change if they are not provided enough help :-/

I am afraid people in two sides are getting more divided and more extreme. Don't forget based on the vote count, it is still a 50:50 but not 90:10 fight.

flying_sheep··on Java Verbal Expressions
That really depends on how complicate the regular expression is. For me this debate sounds like arguing assembly vs C. We will need some sort of abstraction to develop a higher-level stuff in case we need it.
flying_sheep··on The Joy of Cryptography
I love this site a lot. The fun thing is that, the missing of TLS connection will allow people to tamper this site which teaches people how to prevent tampering :)
flying_sheep··on Dnjs: A pure subset of JavaScript that wants to replace configuration languages
I wouldn't use any turing-complete language as configuration :-/

Determinism is essential for a configuration language. I don't want to load configurations that may or may not crash your computer.

flying_sheep··on Clear explanation of Rust’s module system
I read the official document several times and still not feel understanding the module system. But I feel like an expert after reading this :) Thanks Shesh

flying_sheep··on Apple Hides Taiwan Flag in Hong Kong
I found some serious problem about Hacker News. This sharing was ranked #1 in news tab just two hours ago. But now it disappears in the list. This scares me because someone is censoring Hacker News.
flying_sheep··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
True. And this is getting worse because China is now rich. In old time, only brain-washed patriots believe those propaganda. But now CCP hires well-educated writers, Weibo opinion leaders to write seemingly objective articles that credit CCP exclusively with the economy growth. The middle classes in China has already believed in those propaganda faithfully because the messages match perfectly what they have experienced.

We need to be afraid of them. Because even if the Great Firewall disappears now, they will continue to defend CCP and their authoritarian system.

flying_sheep··on Information operations directed at Hong Kong
I was living in HK for 30 years. What I want to say is that we all need to prepare for a new form of propaganda, which is partially based on partial fact but with twisted explanation. They are getting more logical, therefore more persuasive to middle-classes. If we do not have freedom or human rights in our minds, it will be very hard to deny those propaganda.
flying_sheep··on Hong Kong protest: What is mainland China hearing?
I lived in Hong Kong for 30 years. What was happened in these 3 months did not come out of nowhere.

1997 - now: HK gov allows 150 people from China to immigrate to Hong Kong every day, even there are strong opinion to suspend immigration due to lack of housing and crazy population density problem. Even worse, HK gov does not pose ANY restrictions of the immigrant about their education, language, or criminal background. There was one case that one pro-Beijing arsonist killed 2 immigration Officers but still obtained residency in HK.

2012: HK gov tried to introduce a compulsory brain-washing subject to high school. 500 thousands (out of 7 millions) people protested.

2013: HK gov used crappy reason to turn down a well-known HK businessman to obtain free public broadcast license. So that HK has effectively only one company to run free TV channel. And the news of that channel is highly biased.

2019: HK gov tried to pass extradition law to China. Even after 1 million people protested, HK gov still continues legislation. After 2 millions people protested, the CEO of HK gov only said "the bill is dead" in TV but did not formally withdraw the bill in legislation council.

This is only a tiny list of what gov did in the past 22 years. What gov is going to do is to pass a construction that cost trillions of HK dollars (app. 120 billion USD). That will basically empty the treasury of HK, and the future of every HK people. That's why people are so frustrated and protest in that extend.

flying_sheep··on Show HN: Catj – A new way to display JSON files

jq can also do the same thing, with more flexibility. And it is possible to combine with bash alias to make it indistinguishable from catj

flying_sheep··on Forget monoliths vs. microservices: cognitive load is what matters
I think it is more than communication skills. Communication is effective when something is "speakable". This implies both parties has good abstraction over the same thing. But when the system is overly complex (no matter monoliths or micro-services), it is impossible to build a good abstraction.

Just considering a n parameters boolean function. You can build a simple formula around it and communicate well if there is simple pattern. For example, f(x1, x2, ...) = x1

When there is some exception? Fine, we can still talk about general pattern, while communicate particularly about the exception.

But when the mapping gets more random, at some point no one can describe it without going through each value one by one. The complexity will become O(2^n). You will spend whole day to communicate only tiny part of the function

flying_sheep··on Micro Frontends
Such monad interfaces are best enforced by language / compiler, however it is non-tractable to do that. Even in Haskell they just move the monoid check to programmer (especially associativity). What is worse, if the law is violated in some tiny subset of the data, that can lead to non-trivial bug. That is why it is difficult to apply in real world, which is usually very complicated :-(
flying_sheep··on ‘No to China extradition’ – Hong Kong protest against controversial new law
To be exact, China has police (serving Communist Party), has court (highly bias toward plaintiffs who have power), and has justice (the Communist version of justice).

flying_sheep··on Linus Torvalds on Why ARM Won't Win the Server Space
However this does not apply to consumer product, e.g. iOS. When building iOS app for simulator, it is running x86_64 natively in the macOS. When building iOS app for device, it is compiled into ARMv64. Cross-compilation happens every day of iOS development. And the process is 99.9% problem-free. The 0.1% problem comes from missing physical feature (e.g. touch screen / gyroscope) rather than instruction set / system issue.
flying_sheep··on Rust has a static “garbage collector”
It feels like the title abuses the word "garbage collector", which implies automatic and dynamic. That sounds like "Bike is a human-powered motorcycle".

However the article is well-written and very informative. Just need to skip the title :-)

flying_sheep··on Apple releases software fix for MacBook Pro slowdown
Oh my god. That number is unimaginable. Even if my full power desktop i7 can't reach this number. Chips will die very quickly in this temperature. I think Apple is having a real trouble.
flying_sheep··on Apple releases software fix for MacBook Pro slowdown
I doubt if this patch will decrease the lifespan of MacBook. Because for silicon chips, 10 degree Celsius rise in operating temperature will roughly decrease life span by half. If Apple relax the temperature constraint by 20 degree Celsius (e.g. from 50 degree to 70 degree), it is expected that the lifespan of some component will decrease by 75%.
flying_sheep··on The Data Transfer Project
The intention of this project is great. But I doubt if it can even work well. The whole project depends on the fact that everything to synchronize can be standardized. But this is almost impossible.

Let's say "Birth of Date". Some contact providers support BOD without year. But some support only the whole date. If the companies do no even agree on this tiny little item, how can they agree on larger deviations? Like max number of phone numbers in a contact profile? The size/format of profile image? Address format? and so on

flying_sheep··on Ask HN: Developers, how do you keep SSH and web URLs organized at work?
I made a script to feed URLS to fzf so that I can select and open the url with partial keywords.

For example, you can enter 'prod region1 bestservice' to interactive open the URL.

Here is the script:

    #!/usr/bin/env fish

    function +fzf_open_url
        [ -z "$FZF_OPEN_URL_LIST" ]; and echo "Please configure \$FZF_OPEN_URL_LIST first." >&2; and return

        set -l result ( \
            cat $FZF_OPEN_URL_LIST \
                | sort \
                | uniq \
                | grep -ve '^$' \
                | fzf --bind "enter:execute-silent:open {}" \
        )
    end

flying_sheep··on The impossible dream of USB-C
To solve the problems what the author is facing, we need to invent another port and cable standard -- which is far worse than keeping USB-C-like port and only buying a new cable.
flying_sheep··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
I automated my resume upload system because Dropbox does not allow static website hosting anymore. Whenever I run an command, it will create an empty folder in AWS. The folder name contains company name and some secret code (to prevent brute-force listing). Therefore I can keep copies for all the resumes I sent.

It must be emphasised that job seeking is not part of work LOL.

flying_sheep··on Ask HN: Where do I get started on ASICs, FPGA, RTL, Verilog et. al?
First of all you must understand logic gates, flip-flops (D-FF, T-FF and so on) and multiplexers. All of them are built on logic gates. To verify that you really understand the concept, try to implement a digital clock. (This one: https://sapling-inc.com/wp-content/gallery/digital-clocks-fo...)

Logic gates are essential of learning digital circuits. After you understand logic gates, you can use it to build many things that are really related to the application. There are many tools to verify the logic gates works as designed.

Then based on the project requirement ($$, time, performance, ...), you can choose to use FPGA or ASIC to implement logic gates. FPGA use array of logic gates while ASIC uses CMOS to implement the logic gates. FPGA is easier to learn and much cheaper. You can buy some development board which costs only several hundred dollars. While ASIC needs much domain knowledge and people involved. ASIC needs you to understand the electronics in order to build something that is useful. You need to understand how the CMOS are implemented (= how semiconductor becomes conductive), how the resistance and capacitance affect the performance, the number of wafer layout which affects the cable layout and more. And don't forget manufacturing can introduce defeats which cause the IC to malfunction in unexpected ways. Each step in ASIC needs a specialist for them

flying_sheep··on Ask HN: Why does GitHub have a black bar?
I thought it was browser rendering error but I was wrong.

I thought it was CSS error but I was wrong.

I thought it was about Trump's act but I was wrong.

How can it be the new design? The title bar should never be the focus of the layout but now it is. It catches our attention before the content which is more important.
