I've been around for the whole lifetime as well and what I remember was technical people gushing all over google for every little thing. I don't remember when the motto came out but I remember that being the point where I knew I didn't like google anymore: to me that sort of thing is just blatant manipulation, which is intelligence-insulting.
flyinRyan··on Why I’m not paying the Troll Toll
Personally, I think it will cost you more to settle in the long run because settling makes patent trolling profitable, which means more companies will do it and you'll get hit more often.

>and seriously, Google got the circles UI spot on, I'm very impressed

I should hope they got circles right as it was the most obvious thing in social networking ever. 30 seconds into my very first usage of facebook and I already realized it was missing what google calls "circles".

>You probably need open source/Wikipedia style alternatives to prevent abuse.

Wikipedia is a bad example, as there is plenty of abuse there [1].

Many more, but it's hard to find them since putting "wikipedia" in your search now causes google to look up those words on wikipedia itself first...

>Moves like this make it clear that they're becoming ever more concerned with the corporate agenda (pushing G+ in this case) than the hacker spirit.

The frustrating thing for some of us was that this is how it has always been and trying to point it out to people just got you shouted down. Google has always been about making money, what else? Watching otherwise intelligent hackers get so genuinely bamboozled by a simple motto has been surprising, to say the least.

We don't need to follow the link. This comment said the research was "entirely fraudulent". Amusing that his actual argument said something rather different.
flyinRyan··on Germans Loved Obama. Now We Don’t Trust Him
Do you somehow not realize that most of these policies (e.g. NSA) were expanded by Obama? Are you really so enraptured by a deep film voice? Name 5 positive things Obama did that "continue in the right direction".
flyinRyan··on Startup Investing Trends
Well, most startups appear to pay crap rates with dubious company ownership schemes. What more value could they get out of outsourcing when they're likely already paying far below minimum wage?
flyinRyan··on Startup Investing Trends
Good list. For 2f, though, is this would-be employers or head hunters? Agencies tend to want word format... because they change your resume to suit the job they're pimping you out for. Can't imagine why an actual company would need word if they can get a PDF.
flyinRyan··on Startup Investing Trends
Good. Software development is horribly underpaid in most places (even the places most on here would say are well paid, IMO) so it's only right that companies should be competing against a person's opportunity to make their own company.
flyinRyan··on Google's Quantum Computer Proven To Be Real Thing (Almost)
Yea, the search engine is about the only thing. Which is why I said "nearly everything" and not "everything".
flyinRyan··on Stop selling your Software for Peanuts
Much of that bleating is just posturing. They know they could get plenty of talent if they paid for it, but they'd rather outsource. For outsourcing you usually have to show that you can't find talent in-country so companies do all kinds of tricks to make sure they can't fill the positions and can outsource the job.
flyinRyan··on Stop selling your Software for Peanuts
That's a nice proposal but the reality is, those who get the app for free will be more likely to request support than those who pay for it.
flyinRyan··on Stop selling your Software for Peanuts
How do you know your monthly orders would have continued consistently this year? Were you adding features as fast as previously? How big is the market for what you're doing? Maybe you are now closer to what your particular market can bear and you'd have made even less at $19.99.

This group lived outside of governance for 2 millennia and don't seem to have what you call "human nature". The fact is, our nature is partially "human nature" and partially a product of our environment. No one knows how much those two things contribute so you can't say "X is human nature". We don't really know and it's not easy to test. But capitalism doesn't exist everywhere and doesn't spontaneously pop up everywhere. What is true, however, is that capitalism seems to rely on continuous growth so they eventually encroach on non-capitalists and "convert" them.

Well, presumably the alternative is to die...
flyinRyan··on Google's Quantum Computer Proven To Be Real Thing (Almost)
So it's like nearly everything Google is famous for then?
flyinRyan··on The Strange Case of Barrett Brown
Everyone laughs when you compare living in the US with living in China and yet... With stories like this of the US going after journalists and even bullying their families to make a point, I wonder how far are we really.
flyinRyan··on The Strange Case of Barrett Brown
Do you really believe that encrypting any data would have changed something? The government is making it up as they go along. I mean, his mother getting charged is a clear mafia-style message send.
flyinRyan··on The Strange Case of Barrett Brown
It's pretty clear at this point that any appearance of "rule of law" in the US is just an illusion. One instance of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, pissing off the wrong person and that illusion will be blown away for you and possibly your family.
flyinRyan··on The Strange Case of Barrett Brown
This is no different than a mafia good smashing out your teeth with a baseball bat because your nose hurt his fist. What's going on in this case is totally clear and the government doesn't care that it's illegal. By using all these nonsense "laws" to do what they would do regardless, they're just throwing salt in the wound.
flyinRyan··on The Strange Case of Barrett Brown
You might not have noticed, but the US government doesn't really follow the laws they make. Those are for citizens.
flyinRyan··on The Strange Case of Barrett Brown
This doesn't explain situations like Brown's mother being charged. That's clearly just being vindictive and showing other would-be journalists how far the state will go if you out them.
flyinRyan··on Memories of Stasi color Germans’ view of U.S. surveillance programs
Good lord, could this actually happen?
flyinRyan··on Memories of Stasi color Germans’ view of U.S. surveillance programs
Wow, this would be worth a Tory vote!
flyinRyan··on Memories of Stasi color Germans’ view of U.S. surveillance programs
It's pretty much the poor countries that want to join. The rich countries like Switzerland are out and want to stay out.
flyinRyan··on Memories of Stasi color Germans’ view of U.S. surveillance programs
Well it looks like the EU is dead wrong in this case and wants to force Germany to spy on its own citizens.
flyinRyan··on New leak shows NSA harvests To, From, and Bcc lines of e-mail data
The person in this thread that is closest to a Fox News cast member would be the local HN government apologist. Namely, yourself.
flyinRyan··on The NSA Can't Tell the Difference Between an American and a Foreigner
>at least with capitalism and representative democracy we're able to acknowledge that and try to rein in that aspect of human nature.

Citation needed. You'd need to find a group who lived completely outside of capitalism their entire lives and yet still exhibit these bad behaviors. And as it happens, lots of such examples exist. They don't bolster your assertion though.

flyinRyan··on The NSA Can't Tell the Difference Between an American and a Foreigner
If enough people started doing that, the US government will just use those handy little militia laws Clinton put in place after the OK City bombing to lock you all up.
