flreln··on Ask HN: What important developments happened in AI/LLMs in 2025?
a friend pointed out these three:

- google has taken the crown in image, video and llms multiple time, openai no longer the greatest and the only

- sonnet 4.5 and opus 4.5 releases for coding

- vibe coding truly happened only in 2025

flreln··on Ask HN: Tips for Writing?
The most insightful book I’ve discovered on writing nonfiction is Ayn Rand’s lectures. She covers all steps of the writing process and outlines everything you need to know to write well.

The second best advice is by PG in Writing, Briefly.

OP here: happy to answer any questions about my setup. Just to clarify - the core idea is not shortcuts but how you can use them to integrate changes in your life like reflecting on how you feel or how well you understand your learning material.

flreln··on How I remember what I learn
I have one deck only because of mixed practice (ref: https://youtu.be/cwaWHeyK_aM). As for import, it sucks. Currently I just copy & paste them on my iPad.

I suspect the method of loci works because our minds seem to remember routes through spaces better than lists. If you’re curious about spatial cognition, watch this intro to the subject from Barbara Tversky: https://youtu.be/gmc4wEL2aPQ.

I'm glad you liked it! You should definitely check out Michael Nielsen's work: http://augmentingcognition.com/ltm.html.
flreln··on How I remember what I learn
No, it doesn't. The point is to remember what you want to remember, not to memorize the whole library.
flreln··on How I remember what I learn
If you're exploring and tinkering, it's OK to go broad and skim trough things quickly. But if you aim for understanding, depth is required. Don’t see a contradiction here with the "life I short part"; it's more about curiosity (exploring) than studying (exploiting).
flreln··on How I remember what I learn
No particular reason; I have a shift+[ shortcut in Drafts that makes the switch between recent files almost instant. I’ve done both and ended up sticking to a separate file with questions.
flreln··on How I remember what I learn
Thanks for your comment! I agree with you on the benefits of forgetting and that learning how to code is way more about practice than theory. I should have added that my primary use of the process is to understand concepts well rather than memorize how to write JSX.

That’s a tough one. I’m not sure I know enough to suggest any systemic changes, but here are a few thoughts: - Apply more mixed practice. This is hard because the books we used to study from are based on the blocked practice idea. - Promote more problem-based learning; not answering “what’s democracy?” on a test but role-playing setting up a new country on the moon. - Rethink testing. This is the toughest one. We’re so conditioned to think of testing as something bad that it’d take enormous changes in the curricula and student’s minds to fix that.
flreln··on How to take meeting notes
Thanks for the tip, fixed.
flreln··on How to take meeting notes
I disagree. Our perception system tracks dozens of parameters during f2f meetings that are simply impossible online because it's a different medium. It's way, way harder to build rapport with someone online.
flreln··on How to take meeting notes
Have you managed to do that and still pay attention to what the person is saying? Especially in a one-on-one.
flreln··on How to take meeting notes
You're right that most formal meetings are a waste of time. My process is for long personal conversations with people I know and respect, where we discuss ideas and things we’re curious about.
