NB: my favorited comments are mostly a collection of the stupidest comments I've seen, so I can return to them and marvel later.

My favorited submissions are things I've actually found interesting.

floren··on The Test
So I guess I'm not exactly clear what you're saying here. A surface reading would be that you're equating somebody saying "It was stupid when Trump tried to rename Lake Ontario" with getting a swastika tattooed on themselves, but that's so stupid that you must mean something else.
floren··on Meta puts its AI assistant on a keychain
What is it with AI guys and having a "little buddy" on your screen? Half the vibe coded demos I see show some pixel-art character in the corner, everybody wants to put them in their smartglasses, etc.

Do you really need a fancy tamagotchi to be your friend all the time? Maybe you could name it Jarvis, that would be original.

floren··on I said no and Apple said yes
The idea of a distro being "designed" around a particular DE has always annoyed me too. I'd hear people saying they wanted to try KDE so they wiped Ubuntu and installed Kubuntu instead and it's like, buddy you could have just... installed KDE. I know some specialized distros are really all about shipping a nicely-configured setup for their specific DE, but your old standbys like Debian, Redhat, Arch, Slackware, these are all infinitely flexible.
floren··on I said no and Apple said yes
When you say "sideload" you mean... "install packages"?
floren··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
I think I'm going to call this "no true slopsman"
floren··on Space Force Uniform Is Inspired by Quasi-Satirical Film 'Starship Troopers'
Are we the baddies?
floren··on Doomscrolling ourselves to death
It's always surprising how many HN readers seem to read only non-fiction, sometimes only self-help style books about business and startups. Some are even proud of that.
floren··on Mushroom hunting with LLMs: what can go wrong?
It's also quite a thrill to spot a log absolutely covered in oyster or woodear mushrooms (two I feel very confident in identifying, and thankfully both were common on the 10k trail above Albuquerque)
floren··on Hollywood's Video Game Era Is Here. Will It Be Any Good?
But you could just watch Aliens.
floren··on The Vibe Tax
1. be the kind of guy who thinks more LOC = more betterer

2. ask an LLM to do the needful and never ever look at the results except to count LOC

> The closest such advance in recent years didn't happen and instead turned into the macbook neo. Apple could have released an OS for the iphone pro max model of phones that allow them to boot Mac OS when attached to a docking station. And sold a laptop formfactor docking station.

I find it more likely that Apple are working furiously the other way: to make Macbooks boot iOS.

Cuz you're a MAKER, just see the box of BOJACK-brand screws on top of the power supply in the action shot.
floren··on An Engineer's Old Cooking Trick Is Going Viral, Divides the Internet
You're supposed to read through the recipe before you start. Also, most modern recipe books and websites put prep/cook/total times at the very top, so if you have to marinate overnight it'll say "total: 13h" or something like that.
floren··on Intriguing stories in computer science
Many of the "stories" just go to generic Wikipedia pages: DNS, garbage collection, etc. They're interesting and important things but not "stories".
floren··on The federal keyword lists that canceled billions in research funding
Biologists I know were reporting that they'd changed their grant proposals to study e.g. ovarian cancer in "non-male" mice
floren··on Company Offering '100% Human-Written, Never AI' Medical Research Is 100% AI
It's got "Gold" in the name, it may very well be a Trump operation.
floren··on US hires over 2k video gamers as air traffic controllers
Sean "DEI Bike Lanes" Duffy?
floren··on Why Are There Statues of Beavers on Top of This Oxford Street Shop?
In English, the creature is a pig or a hog, and the meat is pork.

We also have major feral pig problems in parts of the US.

floren··on Stateless MCP has recaptured my interest
The LLM can't tell the difference between your messages and theirs, however many times you say "No mistakes"
floren··on Rio-vt and librio: Rio's terminal engine, now embeddable
Naming a terminal emulator "rio" seems like a cruel joke on Rob Pike :)
floren··on Why some people mow a lawn better than others
You can do things correctly, with thought and attention even if they seem unimportant, or you can be a feckless dipshit. This applies to most things in life.
floren··on There Will Come Soft Rains (1950) [pdf]
Boy, I hope somebody got fired for that blunder!
floren··on Alien World Chemistry Found Inside Meteorite That Struck New Jersey Home
Next time, try a clever joke.
floren··on I Inspected My Take-Home Interview Project. It Was a Whole Operation
Although the questions sometimes trigger useful hallucinations (we were able to instantly disqualify tons from our last hiring batch due to a hallucinated Go stdlib call, their code didn't even compile), the other thing is that you can ask the candidate to talk about their code during an interview. I've seen plenty that submitted good answers but couldn't answer even basic questions about the code they wrote ("what does a sync.Waitgroup do?")
floren··on It's a shame what's happened to radio
Yeah, for a long time I thought I disliked Rush because I only heard "Tom Sawyer" and "Closer to the Heart" on the radio. Turns out the best shit doesn't get airtime.

At least my hometown classic rock station would do a bunch of Zeppelin at 10pm, so I got exposed to their broader range.

floren··on Miss the old web? Join us haywood.computer
Or too little... aside from themes and music and a chatbox there's not much to it.
floren··on That post never existed. Stop listening to that thing
> Here's the example I throw out to people who have been in the Bay Area for a year or two. It's early in the year. You want to drive straight through the middle of Chinatown in SF. Why might that be a bad idea?

Well the answer is actually that it's always a bad idea to drive straight through the middle of Chinatown at any time of the year, because the streets are narrow and full of tourists.

floren··on PSA about abuse of cat(1) command. Don't abuse cats
Definitely not, I like IPv6.
floren··on PSA about abuse of cat(1) command. Don't abuse cats
if this wanton abuse of cat(1) doesn't stop, we're on track to run out of PIDs by 2031! Just because Unix makes it cheap and easy to fork doesn't mean you have to!

(who gives even a single shit, my god)

floren··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
Oh yeah solar is getting good but the guys who come to your door and say they'll give you a $0 electric bill just sign here are peddling something that's maximally profitable for them
