floomk··on Bluesky now checks against this array of slurs when creating a username
I'm not American and I know plenty of Guidos. It's just a name, and banning people named that is incredibly discriminatory.

It's actually just a name. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guido

Your name is similar to a slur in my language. Please change it.

I have no idea why you would pay that. Just eject.
floomk··on Ask HN: React Native or Flutter for a new app in 2023?
Integration with the operating system look & feel & accessibility by using native UI elements instead of poorly trying to mimic it in a webview

Because you might want to give your users a somewhat decent experience.

> guessing youtube is constantly trying to kill this, just like ytdl, but for now amazing work keeping it up

their lawyers are, but the developers certainly aren't. the og youtube-dl hasn't released in 2 years and still works mostly fine.

Well, the US seemingly can't.

Why do these companies have the right to detain someone?
floomk··on Big Tech can transfer Europeans’ data to US in win for Facebook and Google

They won't. They have made it pretty clear that all your data are belong to us.

Hardly.

> Windows does a pretty good job of failing to be a user controlled operating system.

Then the OS has spoken. Having user space applications pretend to include security barriers that can be easily circumvented is not the way.

> Also that AV is far more apt to be guilty of injecting some bullshit into the process space.

Many AVs have a terrible track record, yes. Perhaps if Mozilla actually cared they should start their own and try to do better? At least it would run as a privileged process and have some chance at success.

Build servers are a thing, and using a mac as a build node is hilariously complicated and unstable when compared to linux. When my developers push to git the android app is built & tested & uploaded to the store automatically. We also have this working for iOS but it requires a mac in a closet that needs manual maintenance every month or so when apple breaks something again. The linux servers are generally hands-off. Also, android builds are about 10x faster because they run on a machine with 128gb ram and a big cpu which isn't even possible with a mac (and even if it was, I'm sure apple would charge an insane amount for it).

This seems like a job for the operating system or antivirus software. Not of a browser.

> No, an artist absolutely should have a reasonable expectation that their improv at a coffee shop won't be ripped off next week by a billion dollar publisher.

Nah. There's no way for that artist to know if some other artist did the exact same bit a week earlier. If they happened to have done so, tough luck! Doesn't matter that you came up with it independently on your own.

> Which would be possible in a situation where someone has the power to do so, but this isn't always the case. In industries where there are large negotiating power imbalances between creators and others they work with, you will typically find that creators have little to no negotiation power. There's a reason we have many legal protections in many parts of the law outside of contract law.

So don't share it with them if you don't want to take the risk and you also don't want to enter into an agreement.

> A spouse is the most formal of the examples I listed. And a spouse in many places is someone you've already entered into a formal legal agreement with. But to the contrary, I don't think it is reasonable to expect people bring NDAs to a first date.

So don't share it with them if you don't want to take the risk and you also don't want to enter into an agreement.

> The concept of privacy isn't predicated on monetary value.

Indeed, it's predicated on privacy. Don't share what you don't want to share.

> * An artist improvising in public

You have no reasonable expectation of privacy in public.

> * Someone sharing with another party in a situation with a large power imbalance (and so they refuse to sign an NDA with anyone)

Don't share it with them until they sign. If they sign and violate the NDA, you got your payday.

> * Someone sharing in a social situation where NDAs are not practical (romantic, familial, or personal relationships)

If you don't trust your spouse then get a prenup. The other categories aren't special.

That said, if your work is so easy to copy it probably wasn't (or shouldn't have been) valuable to begin with. Implementation matters more than ideas. So most of these concerns are silly to me.

Why would you send your data to the company that built its value by slurping up everyone's data without consent? It doesn't matter what they promise now, they have shown that they dont care about intellectual property, copyright or any of that. They literally cannot be trusted.

How long until apple blocks this? They are famous for protecting their walled garden and hostility towards cross platform development tools.
floomk··on New study reveals most classic video games are unavailable
NDAs are a thing. You don't need invasive copyright laws for any of this.
floomk··on New study reveals most classic video games are unavailable
That's fine, just don't share it. If you don't intend to use it commercially you do not deserve commercial protections.

You're confusing first party apps with third party apps. Also you're forgetting that this is a forum which is heavily biased to developers. I use Android because my phone isn't a fashion piece. Some of my users sadly use iOS. They want the software on the devices they purchased and own, but Apple is preventing us from delivering this to them unless we do exactly as Apple commands.

So in the end everyone loses, except Apple.
