flippinburgers··on Bad Manors: The McMansion as Harbinger
I would classify anything that tries to butt up against the edge of a lot to be the first sign of grotesqueness. I will never understand the American obsession with quantity over quality.
flippinburgers··on Health advisory on social media use in adolescence
So what addictions did you have (hours spent and detriment) before and after?

Regarding drugs I would be surprised if addicts are simply not evaluating their situation properly in order to "think their way out".

flippinburgers··on What I want from the internet
Are you saying that racism is only a problem in rich countries?
flippinburgers··on Geography of Kansas (2022)
Nothing wrong with Kansas.
flippinburgers··on Passkeys: The beginning of the end of the password
Unless there is proof that the hardware on the phone is isolated specifically for this task you cannot make the claim that google is unable to MITM.
flippinburgers··on How to reduce stress and overcome anxiety as a software developer
To expand on the personal preference this part can be either a blessing or a curse depending on whether or not you are in a position to be able to force decisions in the codebase. It grinds my gears having to work with nitpickers but I am currently trapped in that kind of setting at my current job. It sucks.
flippinburgers··on Japan's shrinking population faces point of no return
Sounds like a threat! Hahahhaa.
flippinburgers··on Geoffrey Hinton leaves Google and warns of danger ahead
Who is to say that any news stream will be remotely truthful anymore?

I think we are doomed. It is possible that only horrifically authoritarian societies that already control the narrative will survive this.

flippinburgers··on I got a job as a Waffle House server that pays $2.92 an hour
Frankly one of my most enjoyed jobs was working as a waiter once I got used to it. I was working at a high end restaurant where some wait staff were making $45K+ a year so not perhaps the same situation.

There was definitely a sense of satisfaction not just from serving but also taking a moment to rest after moving your body for a four hour shift. Believe it or not it was a bit of a workout.

flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
First of all there are definitely a countable number of cultures... secondly ... well rolf.
flippinburgers··on Is Gmail killing independent email?
This makes me sad the "old" internet has been dead for a while it seems. I also run my own email "server" but mostly only use it as an inbox so I don't know how things have evolved over time. At some point I signed up for some google feature that will send me a reliability report, zipped, xml from google. I don't remember the details and, yeah, I haven't ever tried to reach out to google but based on their products I imagine it is impossible to actually contact anyone.
flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
Certainly now that history can be rewritten literally in an instant by something like chatgpt means that we are indeed no longer going to know what happened in the past. Granted we haven't ever really known with much certainty, but now complete rewrites are a keypress away.
flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
I too am shocked by violence in shows that are apparently deemed ok for children to watch. Children being anyone under the age of 18.
flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
I have to disagree that hyper-focusing on race and carving out "safe spaces", that allow different racial groups to gather exclusively, and teaching kids that people with their same skin color did bad things that are still not fixed - implying that they should carry the sins of the father - is at all a better state of racial understanding.

I just don't see bridge building taking place in the current approaches.

flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
I don't follow why you are being downvoted because reparations in the form of money paid out will likely never quell the demand for more reparations.
flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
Whitelist/Blacklist. I find the word erasure issue very obnoxious.

One day we will realize all over again that hyper-focus on race only produces more division and more racism. But I'm lost as to whether or not those on the left doing it care. Maybe they want division and feel that minorities will come out on top and all white men will get their chance to "suffer". Not sure. I have been told as much in person by some who hold this philosophy.

flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
Am I the only one who finds the end of Return of the Jedi to be the most horrible edit among all of the edits? I mean... I just want the song from my childhood not the garbage found in the blurays...
flippinburgers··on Steven Spielberg: ‘No film should be revised’ based on modern sensitivity
The idea has always been that it is essentially binary with edge cases.
flippinburgers··on Ask HN: What's with the culture of suppression of dissenting views?
I would say it is B. With enough people in the mix, and given how the internet has only just bolstered what would have otherwise been fringe ideas, public forums will eventually shift into a state where there are enough users of subculture X with an axe to grid that will see your comment and downvote it religiously.
flippinburgers··on Google Authenticator now supports Google Account synchronization
There are alternatives like aegis. People should just turn their backs on google auth all together.
flippinburgers··on GitHub Copilot emits GPL code
It is ok to admit that you didn't understand how the GPL uses copyright law.
flippinburgers··on BuzzFeed News is shutting down
The only thing that comes to mind is that the journalists should probably learn to code.
flippinburgers··on SpaceX Starship rocket explodes minutes after launch from Texas
Having pride in ones country is a good thing.
flippinburgers··on Only one pair of distinct positive integers satisfy the equation m^n = n^m
Is this why ... 42?
flippinburgers··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
The suburbs suck because people don't have porches anymore. Even if they did people are highly suspicious of one another. It is a lose-lose situation all around.
flippinburgers··on Making friends as an adult is hard (2021)
I would argue that it is impossible. Mostly because you come to realize that "friendship" is often a lopsided arrangement where the other party is gorging themselves on whatever need they have.
flippinburgers··on Don't write clean code, write CRISP code
Good old Uncle Bab! Love it. I have a borderline weird hatred towards the concept of "clean architecture".
flippinburgers··on Do other founders also feel the need to work alone sometimes?
You are either incredibly lacking in self-awareness, you feel absurdly superior relative to your employees, or you are trolling. It is hard to tell which!
flippinburgers··on Valve Restricts Accounts of 2500 Users Who Marked a Negative Game Review Useful
Their interests align with my values. Being picky about the "why" of their interests especially when it is "they want to survive the crushing hand of Microsoft" is a rather rich criticism on your part.

Yeah companies want to survive economically. If they don't exist the products they make would be completely unavailable. It is a rather uninteresting angle to take.

flippinburgers··on American IQ scores have rapidly dropped, proving the 'Reverse Flynn effect'
I would argue that if you cannot first think logically then the supposed "critical thinking" you are doing is little more than you expressing things in a more or less persuasive way. In this case, persuasion is more hinged on charisma than anything material.

Logical thinking is the precursor to proper critical thinking.
