flipp3r··on Human rights activist risks prison over refusal to disclose password to police
Truecrypt and variations have something like this, I believe they call it Hidden volumes
flipp3r··on U.S. To Ban Laptops in All Cabins of Flights from Europe
> people who are so self centered that they would demand that Americans risk the very real threat of deadly terrorist attacks (...)

Europeans being self-centered? It's us not wanting to hand our computers to USA agencies, known to clone your harddrive and/or implant other crap on it. Agencies who can hold you indefinitely and are affiliated with other 3 letter agencies who do worse. ( See https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/05/photos-of-an-nsa... )

Do you think it would be fair to treat Americans going on vacation to any European country like this? Just let me clone your phone and laptop friend, it's for your own safety /s

flipp3r··on Facebook activated my dormant account and won’t let me deactivate it
Fairly sure someone is. I haven't been using FB for months and last week received a "messenger sign in code" SMS from FB. (I use LastPass btw with each site their own pw, I highly doubt they need your actual current password to login)
flipp3r··on CIRCLean – USB key sanitizer

flipp3r··on GitLeaks – Search engine for exposed secrets on GitHub
Their FAQ indicates they update the index every two months, but no information on what they do with the data in the meantime.

Ideally this scanner would be a feature of a Github or a Bitbucket or a Gitlab, etc, itself. They could've decided to contact them to add this as a feature, or decided to contact repository owners, but instead they decided to sell the data publicly. Real shame.

flipp3r··on GitLeaks – Search engine for exposed secrets on GitHub
I guess that's one way to get attention to your business.

Instead of informing the owners of repositories by creating an issue, you create a search engine to expose them, and then ask to be paid for usage of this index? The only reason someone would want those secrets is to abuse them. This is basically the only use case for the data. Why do this?

This is coming from "fallible.co" whose homepage says "Prevented 40 million+ users personal data leaks". So you are in the business of making sure people's information does not get leaked, and at the same time expose people's secrets?

flipp3r··on [dead]
I'm tired of racism and I hope it never becomes as bad where I live as it is in America. Github is a great example!

Oh wait, you think I meant discimination the article talks about? Yes, that's bad too... However discriminating like the article suggests, by hiring an exact ratio of colours, sexes, religions and other orientations instead of judging people by how well they could do the job, well, that's just as bad..

flipp3r··on Amazon Web Services’ secret weapon: Its custom-made hardware and network
Well my 2cts.. I'm sure they take it serious but AWS has been around for longer, and developers seem to really like it, cause you can spin up a small environment and just play around with it. Google Cloud Platform exists now but I feel it's a bit late to the race. Google App Engine existed before Google Cloud Platform and it was super nice to use in my experience, however at the same time totally locked in with Google. If you wanted to get out it required a lot of development effort, which is not per se the same on AWS. Besides that, there was the Google App Engine bait-and-switch which screwed so many people over.. People who were doing low budget products on Google App Engine and basically had to migrate to something else immediately. This left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm sure I'm not the only one, I've never recommended Google App Engine after this.

Last but not least Google has a super bad reputation when it comes to people's privacy, which many developers care a lot about.

flipp3r··on Generals.io – Capture enemy generals to defeat them
Played the game a bit, on my 4th game a guy game steaming through with his full army going through exactly the only route he could take, blindly, to my slightly lower army general.. Hmm, really makes you think.
flipp3r··on Crises that humanity now faces
5 out of the 13 "impossible crises humanity will face" is people getting power because they were or might become democratically elected. What are you talking about?
flipp3r··on Israeli firm can steal phone data in seconds
Actually Cellebrite themselves have been victim of some kind of hack last month and had a load of their internal documents leaked online. So no, if any, this firm is _not_ the right hands.
flipp3r··on Dalai Lama: Behind Our Anxiety, the Fear of Being Unneeded
Did you actually try this yourself? It presents a login page for me when I do this.
flipp3r··on Amazon flipped a default and made me thousands of dollars
Why should he be? Where in the document does it say Amazon has "S3" as a trademark? His service isn't called "Amazon S3stat"
flipp3r··on 30K Page Views for $0.21: A Serverless Story
There are even package managers which host all their data / indexes on Github ( https://github.com/CocoaPods/Specs/tree/master/Specs ). I personally also back up encrypted data on Github.
flipp3r··on RedHat is hiring to make Linux run better on laptops
As an owner of a Dell XPS Developer Edition, with Ubuntu installed, expect every Linux application you have not to work with its high resolution display. I'm happy enough to get my terminal, Chromium and my IDE working with it, but 99% of applications are just not made for it. Also, before you enter Linux check if applications you use daily ( like Skype ) work well on Linux. Just try it on a VM first. I was really surprised to see what Skype looks like on Linux, especially in combination with the high res screen. Not only that, a load of things just dont work out of the box that you'd expect from a Windows or Mac machine ( small things like unplugging my earphones while the laptop is in sleep mode, turning it on and having no sound, until I find earphones to plug in and out again. ) Do not recommend. What I would recommend is trying out Linux for a month or so, with a dual-boot setup.

flipp3r··on Users spend more minutes per day in Pokémon Go than Facebook
I use Android myself but I've heard from colleagues that if you use a US account you can download it here. For Android it's just downloading executable through any channel that isn't Google's play store.
flipp3r··on Users spend more minutes per day in Pokémon Go than Facebook
One of the reasons is probably that people are using Pokemon Go in countries where it hasn't been released yet. For example here in The Netherlands there's 1.3 million+ players, even though the game is not even available yet in the Android or iOS app stores in The Netherlands.
flipp3r··on Parameter or Argument?

flipp3r··on Zach Holman joins GitLab as advisor
Hey now, don't reveal GitLab's secret trick!
flipp3r··on Blisk – a browser for web developers
A chromium based browser which does everything that google chrome has built into its development console... what? Integrations with other systems, you mean like tonnes of chrome extensions already provide? ... What's the point of this browser? I'd like a browser that makes development easier but literally everything this browser claims so solve is already built into chrome.

flipp3r··on Why do people keep coming to this couple’s home looking for lost phones?
My guess is that there are probably tools used by criminals to trick anti-theft software into passing a false location. You can quite easily fake your geolocation.
flipp3r··on Swiss-Based Cloud VPS – For Developers Who Care
WOW that's expensive for no good reason. I can get a server like this for about 10% of the price at for example OVH. Apart from being based in Swiss which I'm sure you're not the only host, what does this have to offer that's worth the 1000% higher price?

flipp3r··on Hacking Head Tags for Speed and Profit
Been a while since i browsed HN, anyway.

It's good that you updated it, because I've had SO MANY issues with this with clients in the Dutch oil & gas industry, users working on IE and having their mode set to IE 7 to work with some rediculously ancient application. Adding the tag can save you a lot of time.
