flinty··on Insiders say Google was interested in buying Snap for at least $30B last year
It's interesting how Facebook has such a keen eye to spot the next pivot and move their giant ship inch by inch methodically in the right direction. They did it with newsfeed for the main site, main site to mobile transition(albeit with the html5 fiasco thrown in for a year), carving out messenger(and pivoting it to another screen to show ads) and now pivoting Instagram to subsume Snapchat.

Kinda how Netflix vs HBO is a question of - how fast can Netflix become HBO before HBO becomes Netflix. Instagram is definitely trying their best to have part of its identity be Snapchat. What is Snapchat trying to become rapidly before Instagram subsumes Snapchat? The walls are closing in fast(like it happened with Twitter) and if they don't figure out the answer soon they will suffer the same fate.

flinty··on Amazon's new refunds policy will 'crush' small businesses, outraged sellers say
There's likely a bunch of factors that go into it. Might even be a score that is updated based on your purchase, return history, length of having a prime membership, amount spent on amazon etc.

flinty··on Priceline now worth $100B
yep, marketing turns a commodity into something cherished and desired. Literally everything is a commodity unless marketing has put gloss on it
flinty··on Priceline now worth $100B
All about leverage points. Being the middleman is a great leverage point on the internet - fb, amazon, google.
flinty··on Uber CEO Kalanick likely to take leave
Its sad how very few if any news orgs will mention his recent loss of his mother and serious injuries to his father in a boat accident as a potential cause for taking a leave of absence.

http://web.stanford.edu/group/chineserailroad/cgi-bin/wordpr... Another notch in the history of Chinese/foreign labor doing great things to improve american lives :)

>Winter 1866-1867: One of the harshest winters in history, featuring 44 storms and averaging 18 feet of snow at the summit. Despite this, the Chinese workers continued work on the tunnels. The Tunnel 6 labor force by this time is almost completely made up of Chinese. Avalanches pose particular danger, as demonstrated at Strong’s Canyon (Tunnels 11 and 12) known as Camp 4, which included 2 gangs of Chinese and a gang of culvert men.[16]

Is this in response to the bloomberg article on how the new CFO over the past year has been cutting moonshots?
flinty··on Google Makes So Much Money, It Never Had to Worry About Financial Discipline
Yeah, you hit the nail on the head. Short(shorter than usualy for Google) term financial motives kill any far fetched ideas from ever having a chance. Wall Street demands up and to the right movement every 3 months. Companies like Microsoft, Facebook, Google, Apple try to have their own internal cadence of some goals in 3-5 years. Google had 10+ year projects but from the sounds of this article and what has been happening in the past year or so that leash is being shortened drastically. Sad day but I guess every company has to eventually grow up. Maybe another contender will emerge for long range innovation.

flinty··on Don't Give Up on the Guitar, Fender Is Begging You
This sounds conceptually similar to how teaching CS or teaching programming to some one later in life focusses on algorithms data structures and other "inside baseball" concepts rather than asking them what is something you would like the computer to do for you or a real life application they would like to see in the world and show them the simplest path to getting a MVP of the thing they are interested in. Once they have that they will be more curious to build something else using their first experience as a base. Maybe a few months or a year or so later they would explore deeper concepts like learning data structures, algorithms and other optimizations
flinty··on Google reverses its ‘digital death sentence’ for Pixel phone resellers
I have a similar situation. I had created an account just for a specific client to share files via google drive. Don't remember the password any more and can't access those files. No recourse.
flinty··on Google joins .NET Foundation as Samsung brings .NET support to Tizen
So if you were to build a time machine and go back to 2004 and told some one the following, which do you think they will believe:

Microsoft joins Linux foundation and has a seat on the board

Google joins .NET foundation

Trump is president of the United States

Empathizing, giving people the benefit of doubt and assuming good intentions.
flinty··on Why Remote Work Should Change Startup Culture
The author isn't in an engineering role. The tools listed in the article seem more centered around collaboration between a project/product manager and engineers versus between an engineering team. Hence no mention of git/source control
