fleischhauf··on Mandatory helmet laws make cyclists less safe
how is this wrong? A helmet protects your head and thus your brain. It makes sense wear helmets in situations where your head is more prone to be damaged (e.g. construction work, or in this case biking).
fleischhauf··on Gamification affects software developers: Cautionary evidence from GitHub
yes
fleischhauf··on Ask HN: Nuclear plants in war zones: A valid reason not to build more
just make it look like an accident and you are not responsible for starting a nuclear war. counting the number of people accidentally falling out of windows these days certain organizations seem to have more of them..
fleischhauf··on Ask HN: Is it possible to have a structured work day in software dev?
its still possible to do meetings (timewise) between europe and asia at for both acceptable hours though, societal pressure aside
fleischhauf··on Free Markets Don’t Buy Peace
germany didnt have great experience this looking at the the invasion of ukraine and russian gas being exported to germany
fleischhauf··on Show HN: Inflation-adjusted stock charts – Total Real Returns
aren't they all subject to inflation?
fleischhauf··on Absurd Trolley Problems
I just assumed it would be replaced with some better trolley. After all which barbaric people would just not have any public transport at all?
fleischhauf··on New links found between musical training and cognitive ability
aren't we already post scarcity? it's more of an distribution issue at this point I think
fleischhauf··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
while this might be true for most of Twitter, my experience is very different. I've been following researchers mostly and aside from very recently published work there are very interesting conversations or thought threads.so i guess it heavily depends on your Twitter bubble
fleischhauf··on Nvidia Research Turns 2D Photos into 3D Scenes
I have the impression, that now some of them seem to really end up in some practical applications. Funnily enough someone just today showed me a feature of his phone where you can select some undesired objects in youe photo and it would just replace them with a fitting background indistinguishable from the original photo.
fleischhauf··on Will the climate crisis force America to reconsider nuclear power?
I still havent heard of a solution to nuclear waste. In my opinion nuclear could be the transition technology though. Also nuclear is not cheap at all from what ive read..
fleischhauf··on UK to put nuclear power at heart of net zero emissions strategy
Not the radioactive waste and meltdown chance though
fleischhauf··on How Doctors die. It’s not like the rest of us (2016)
I like the fact that we are made of atoms. Even if we die they will remain, even if it is only energy. So, for me its very comforting to think that sure i will stop exisiting as this configuration of tiny particles, however its not the end, its just a reconfiguration and i will become one with the universe, a tiny part of everything.
fleischhauf··on The Human Brain in Numbers: A Linearly Scaled-Up Primate Brain (2009)
For that to happen you'd also need the people with bigger brains(smarter?) to procreate more often than others. Not sure if thats going to happen..
fleischhauf··on Can programming be liberated from the von Neumann style? (1978)
While i agree that it is more difficult to distribute computational load between cpu and gpu than it aught to be, Gpu is not necessary faster for all workloads than cpu, it is very specific. Most of computations can probably be executex faster on cpu.
fleischhauf··on Survey shows people no longer believe working hard will lead to a better life
Looking forward to the next opportunity by exploiting robots
fleischhauf··on ‘Positive deviants’: Why rebellious workers spark great ideas
So you work in some scrum framework with tasks and sprints? I wonder how feasible that is in frameworks like that
fleischhauf··on Google 2.4% Rate Shows How $60B Is Lost to Tax Loopholes (2010)
This is from 2010 is there any information on if its still that bad and how its currently done?
fleischhauf··on The cost of cloud, a trillion dollar paradox
You lost the wager unfortunately
fleischhauf··on Money and Investing (1996)
yeah, you are probably right. That would make a lot more sense.
fleischhauf··on Money and Investing (1996)
Confusingly i dont think its that simple. If you equate wealth to work, then with increased automatization, you can grow wealth without stealing it from someone else. Not saying that you can't increase wealth through exploitation though.
fleischhauf··on To the brain, reading computer code is not the same as reading language
While that might be true, did you try to sing and write like the second paragraph suggests?
fleischhauf··on Progress Over Perfection
I feel the same way every time i read all those productivity tips like time boxing. No one seems to like to reflect on things
fleischhauf··on It's 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better (2016)
I wouldnt call a global pandemic easy..
fleischhauf··on Doubts over a ‘possible sign of life’ on Venus
If you read the paper they are very very careful with their claims. Also please prove us wrong is the default position in science, thats what peer review is all about. I dont see a problem with that.
fleischhauf··on Poll: 62% of Americans Say They Have Political Views They’re Afraid to Share
I agree. How crazy is it to think its ok for donations to one of the established parties should have repercussions on your emplyment? Dont people see that the other side could want the same thing then.
fleischhauf··on Forearm artery reveals human evolution continues?
Replacement makes sense, your friend with extra artery will survive in case of a critical surgery and might have another kid while you'd die with no extra kid. Does not need to happen to you but on average. Your friend with better bloodflow might also have a stronger erection and therefore on average more kids (pulling this out of my ass obviously). You dont need to have any obvious disadvantages, on average it might still work better..
fleischhauf··on Forearm artery reveals human evolution continues?
So this means evolution actually reacted on progress on medicine and we are evolving our own spare parts for surgical procedures. While this makes sense im still amazed!
fleischhauf··on Sudan Ends 30 Years of Islamic Law by Separating Religion, State
Finally some good news in world politics
fleischhauf··on China again boosts R&D spending by more than 10%
This is a very interesting question and one would hope that non repressive societies are more creative and have a higher scientific output. Im not 100 % sure thats the case, however.
