flavmartins··on How I Learned More at one TEDx Conference than a Quarter in College
Maybe you're taking the wrong classes in college?

I love TEDx events, but they are more of an enlightening experience and source of inspiration than developing specific skills at something.

I don't think that TEDx will teach me MS Project effectively enough to be a great project manager.

TEDx won't teach me the programming principles to be a better programmers.

TEDx WILL inspire me more than my practical class in college will, it will give me lifehacks to make certain aspects of life better, but it won't be the ultimate solution.

There is no one single thing to do it all. Balance is needed. College, TEDx (or other outside sources of inspiration), and personal hard work and time.

flavmartins··on Do more popular people shy away from controversial Facebook discussions?
Most Facebook controversial posts aren't invitations for discussions, but biased rants.

Discussions almost never really take place. Most people don't know how to be objective.

You can make all of the arguments you want with every piece of evidence supporting it, yet most people are so entrenched in their way of thinking that they still refuse to really look at issues objectively. Even when slammed in the face with the truth, they'll generally find some weak straw man argument to still retreat to in order to maintain their biased point of view.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: I made $5000 from company options, how can I put them to good use?
Save it.

You said it yourself..."I have no experience in organizing anything". If you use it towards pretty much anything, it most likely won't give you a return on your money.

Investing in startups is something you do when you've already done all of your traditional investing and can afford to take in the HIGH risk that comes with startups.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: Why Won't Microsoft Port 'Project' to OS X?
This is the greatest mystery to me. The only thing I can think of is that the share of business people on strictly OS X systems are too few to make porting project worthwhile.

Right now, I have to use Parallels to Boot a Windows VM to run Project. OS X does have Project alternatives but I find them either too expensive and not as complete as Project or somewhat backwards to use their file types to share with Windows users using Project. Maybe I'm wrong, but right now I haven't found anything exactly like or better than Project.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: What's your Twitter handle?
http://twitter.com/flavmartins

I pretty much follow everyone with a real account back. I don't surf the general timeline but follow hashtags and keywords for conversations taking place online.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: cheap reliable host for Wordpress blog
Webfaction! You can't go wrong. It's screaming fast with it's fine tuned nginx servers, 512MB so it's more than most shared hosting environments will give you for applications.

I'm a big Wordpress blogger and run http://winthecustomer.com. I've been offered several free VPS accounts from various hosting companies in exchange for a plug for their services but after testing them out, I end up sticking with my PAID shared hosting account with Webfaction.

I've been a HUGE fan for 4+ years now. $7 mo. is the best $7 of hosting you can buy and better than others that cost $20+ per month.

NOTE: Webfaction doesn't gimmick you with "unlimited" crap with their hosting accounts. When others offer "unlimited" they really should included about a million * next to that. I used to work in Web hosting and know for a fact that after several gigs of space or bandwidth usage, they'll kick you out and force you to upgrade or find another host.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: What are the top 3 apps you use daily by amount of times opened?
Mobile apps?

If I don't count mail, messages, or phone, then I would say: Tweetbot is #1 by far. Next would probably be Facebook and either Music or Feedly.

flavmartins··on Poll: How many Bitcoin do you own?
Just started mining this week. It took 6 months for the dedicated machine to arrive.
flavmartins··on Ask HN: I'm done with Gmail (a.k.a. NSA-Mail). What's the best alternative?
mailpile looks NICE! I'll have to keep checking on it.
flavmartins··on Can't remember iPhone stock photo site submitted to HN (don't upvote)
I upvoted just because I think the site is SO cool.
flavmartins··on Ask HN: Porn withdrawal?
Find a support group: http://addictionrecovery.lds.org/?lang=eng

I've counseled many people through this and have found that getting support is a huge step in making progress in overcoming your addition.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: What iOS HN reader is good these days?
Right now I'm using http://ihackernews.com/ and setting a bookmark for it on my iDevices.

The bookmark icon is very clean and I get all of the functionality of HackerNews.

I've tried a bunch of free apps (not going to pay to read free HN) but was disappointed with all of them. Either they don't look very good or the ones that do, don't refresh to show previous posts so all you get are the first page of highest ranked or first pages of newest posts.

flavmartins··on EVERY ONE I need your honest opinion
A few items:

1) Lose the iPhone 3g picture. You need to be up to date on that. It should be an iPhone 5 or newer Android smartphone.

2) Lots of little grammar issues:

- "Providing Realtime Advertising Data by Analyzing Pictures, in a blink of an eye"

You're switching between capitalizing the headline and then not at the end -- should be either:

Providing Realtime Advertising Data by Analyzing Pictures, In the Blink of an Eye

Or

Providing real-time advertising data by analyzing pictures in the blink of an eye.

-"Many companies pay alot of money" vs. "Many companies pay a lot of money". Although, I would change this to say something like, budgets for mobile advertisement are expected to grow X% over the next 2 years. Or something like that. The current statement comes off as "I've heard that some people spend a lot of money, so we're planning on selling things to them." It sounds like a rookie.

-"Many companies loose alot of valuable customers" vs. "Many companies lose a lot of valuable customers". Even here I would stick to X% of customers are lost because...

-And thats where PictAlyze. Should be "that's where PictAlyze"

3) Site organization could use some work. It would look much better if you stuck with 2 columns and rotated between a picture and a section of text opposite the picture on the column next to the image.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: Is there evidence that artificial sweetener is bad for you?

flavmartins··on Ask HN: Does a Skype work for you on mac?
yes. just used it today. mountain lion. latest version. try reinstalling.
flavmartins··on If I want to beat Google from now on, what should I do now?
Give up right now. You won't be able to do it.
flavmartins··on I only have a HackerNews cred of (10), does it make a difference to have more?
What sort of flagging abilities do you have?
flavmartins··on I only have a HackerNews cred of (10), does it make a difference to have more?
Super interesting. I wonder if we could get a 500-er to confirm this?
flavmartins··on Ask HN: Which SSL?
Use current customer reviews to make your decision. SSL Shopper reveals who the best SSL providers are.

http://www.sslshopper.com/certificate-authority-reviews.html

flavmartins··on What Is The Best Hosting Service?
Webfaction. $5 shared hosting on Nginx servers, very nice, clean system. SSH access to mess around and have fun.

I run a rock solid suite of Wordpress sites and have nothing but GREAT things to say about the experience.

flavmartins··on Why would Techcrunch write about Vevo in Polish?
I wondered the same thing. Hack?
flavmartins··on Groopic.com Expiring - Anyone Want It?
Yes. I'd like it.
flavmartins··on Poll: Do you use your real identity on HN?
I use my online profile name for HN, you can always find and contact me on Twitter: @flavmartins.

If I have something to say, I say it and stand behind it.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: What's the best company to buy SSL certificates from?
DigiCert.com is the CA that will give you the trust and assurance with the high verification standards that you would get with the Verisigns (Symantec) of the world but with the start-up like cool customer service and affordable price that customers today deserve.

The cheapest SSL options there ($20 and under) offer NO verification of the applicant of the certificate. Thus, you could be a scammer for all they care, as long as you control your site (even a phishing site) they've give you the "domain validated" certificate.

Stick with either EV (green bar, extra assurance) or a high-assurance only shop like DigiCert, Symantec, Entrust, or GlobalSign. It'll also show your users you care about trust and identity assurance online.

flavmartins··on Google I/O Event Easter Egg
I get a Matrix-style 1/0 screen.

flavmartins··on What do you think about an email client with an interface like pinterest?
+1
flavmartins··on The blog is running EXTREMELY slow. Can you find out why?
This is Wordpress, install the BlackBox Debug Bar plugin and then load the site.

A black bar will appear that will track queries and DNS requests being made on the site.

I once had a custom hook that I had copied from a site online to do some random function and for some reason it was SUPER ineffective and caused a 10 second delay when loading a new page.

Try it, you should be able to find what's going on.

flavmartins··on Ask HN: Have you ever been fired for making a version control "mistake?"
No. But you should.

Part of successful development teams is to build within the newest and least experienced members an insane FEAR of failing so that it drives them to build better things rather than be casual about what they do and release garbage. Too many young developers today are growing up with the mentality that they can be casual about their work. That mistakes don't matter. That getting it right isn't the most important thing. That's because they have massive support systems built around them with people who actually answer for when things go wrong, when these young naive developers release crap, break things, and these same people also FIX the crap and garbage that gets released, all because of naive programming.

So, please tell EVERY developer that a version control mistake is grounds for termination and you'll make sure that they REALLY dedicate time and attention to their work.

flavmartins··on What will Facebook be to us to in 10 years?
I'll throw out the radical idea that it won't be anywhere near what it is today. Probably still used casually but no longer the center of everything taking place online.

I've had a FB account since 2006, am up with the tech trends, very social online, but am feeling HEAVY Facebook fatigue. I go back and forth on just ending it for good, but my usage has gone down and will continue to drop.
