flatfilefan··on Any one is interested in local private backup solution alternative to iCloud
Great idea! Especially for Linux users if one can thus avoid the need of having either Mac or Windows install to do backups.

Maybe you could have higher margin if you’d sell it together with the 4b hardware bundled with some media server installed and configured to transcode into iPhone format.

flatfilefan··on How to Not Be Sad
Sounds like the author had lost family feedback support on moving out to live at MIT dorm. So he felt alone and depressed. Then he learned to cope with living alone.
flatfilefan··on Ask HN: What’s a big trend we should all be following?
A lady tells her friend:

- My son adopted Meditation

- Anything is better than just sitting around and doing nothing.

It’s a short joke, but a recurve one :-)

flatfilefan··on Put your bash code in functions
“makepdf & makedoc & openapp” Suddenly the choice of & to send a job into background makes total sense!
flatfilefan··on If this is not the correct way to use a 64-Core Processor, I don't know what is
- What is your level of multi processing programming skills? - Unparalleled!
flatfilefan··on 52 Lessons on the Psychology of Human Nature
I liked the list. It’s easy to read.
flatfilefan··on Linux Mint Dumps Ubuntu Snap
Snap for me means Firefox suddenly says “I won’t open a new tab until you update me and I will drop all tabs on restart”. It also means cached content and configs in many new obscure places. It doesn’t mean any visible improvement so far. So hey, kudos Mint and hey, Ubuntu stop that already.
flatfilefan··on Running Awk in parallel to process 256M records
GNU Parallel + AWK = even less code to write.
flatfilefan··on SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in healthy blood donors during Covid-19 Milan outbreak
So the question is what has caused increased deaths if there actually was an unusual increase compared to previous years at all? Was it something else, like a multiresistent hospital infection in nursing homes?
flatfilefan··on Ask HN: What website, from your early days on the net, do you miss?
Geocities! And the olle Slashdot. Stuff that matters, news for nerds, or some such.
flatfilefan··on Esperanto, an International Language
Linguists are misguided. Instead of studying (diverging) languages or designing new ones they should work on convergence of existing ones. At leas in Europe there should be some Latin, Germanic and Uralic. Slavic belonging to Latin. And then Latin and Germanic uniting in English or such. That’ll be a real humanitarian cause.
flatfilefan··on Ask HN: How do I share a hard drive with my friend?
What about an Explorer-like GUI SFTP client?
flatfilefan··on Ask HN: What have you made that you use daily?
Do you copy them back to your phone and delete the originals to save space on the phone? It would make sense to scale them to the screen size of the phone and no larger.
flatfilefan··on New nuclear reactor designs promise safe, clean electricity
That statement about thousands of lives is not substantiated.

“The 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident caused the deaths, within a few days or weeks, of 30 workers and radiation injuries to hundreds of others. The accident caused the immediate evacuation of about 116 000 people and the permanent relocation of about 220 000 people. The accident caused social and psychological disruption, but apart from the 1800 thyroid cancers that have been reported in inidividuals exposed in childhood, there is no evidence of a major public health impact attributable to radiation exposure 14 years after the accident. No increase in overall cancer incidence or mortality has been observed that could be attributed to radiation exposure. The risk of leukaemia does not appear to be raised, even among the hundreds of thousands of recovery workers sent to clean up the environmental contamination. Neither is there any scientific evidence of other non-malignant disorders associated with radiation exposure“ from the Lancet https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6...

flatfilefan··on Relating natural language aptitude to differences in learning programming
With statistics you want to generalize. Find the simplest model that catches/explains most variation. Leaving that one outlier in would result in a worse model.
flatfilefan··on Linux vs. Windows (a bit lewd and offensive)
Since when locking yourself out of your own computer is considered “hacker”? Hasn’t she just logged in as root at the wrong place and overwritten her user profile files? Happened to me a few times, but I’m far from calling myself a hacker of any sort.
flatfilefan··on Bernie Sanders briefed that Russia is trying to help his presidential campaign
That’s all fine and well but would you care more about political circus in Washington or NATO troops 100km from your second largest city if you were Russian government? NATO extension to the East went on regardless of who was in power in the US. If anything the chaos makes it harder to negotiate. Remember what Obama said to Medvedev?
flatfilefan··on Ask HN: Should you use a fake landing page to validate your idea?
Maybe it’s unethical if you’re a dog.
flatfilefan··on Show HN: TBTC – Bitcoin on Ethereum
A TL;DR here would certainly help to drive the discussion. I have skimmed the white paper two clicks deep and there’s no abstract either. But the idea is interesting and the title is great ;-)
flatfilefan··on A moon landing in 2024? NASA says it'll happen
There’s a theory that all written artifacts are at most 1000 years old. Christian dates (in Roman) got M (1000) infront of all dates and Jewish an V (5000). So we got 2000 years and 6000 claimed history.

Having written the above it appeared to me this could be an ironic illustration of tribal knowledge vs technical documentation issue. Knowing when something happened and reading about it are two separate things.

flatfilefan··on Origins and insights into the historic Judean date palm
It took me quite some time to parse that title. I was wondering whether it’s about some self-dating subculture or something. Self-dating not in historical chronology sense.
flatfilefan··on F-35’s gun that can’t shoot straight adds to its roster of flaws
US doesn’t need to be involved directly for the blocking to become an option. Think about cases like India vs Pakistan vs China or Argentina vs UK or Marocco vs Algeria.
flatfilefan··on F-35’s gun that can’t shoot straight adds to its roster of flaws
“Another scenario theorised by analysts involves the US Government using the F-35’s enabling systems to “punish” a non-cooperative ally, potentially by withdrawing software upgrades or feeding information that would ground the entire fleet.“ https://defence.nridigital.com/global_defence_technology_mar...

There’s more. I just couldn’t find it quickly.

flatfilefan··on F-35’s gun that can’t shoot straight adds to its roster of flaws
Thanks! It would be interesting to know whether purchasing countries will get sole authority in flight package definition in contrast to the ALIS where it had to be signed off in US for every sortie afaik.
flatfilefan··on F-35’s gun that can’t shoot straight adds to its roster of flaws
Wow, that’s massive news. Could you share a link to your source please?
flatfilefan··on How I format SQL code
Great style guide in my opinion. It is actually rather helpful to have those SQLs formatted neatly. As an analyst you have to write quite a few of them. So copy pasting and reusing is most helpful and boosts productivity. To make sure that you don’t make errors a clean layout for eyeballing is necessary. The same for bug fixing, should you have one planted still.
flatfilefan··on Ask HN: Computer science jobs for people who don't like to code?

flatfilefan··on An Adult’s Guide to Social Skills, for Those Who Were Never Taught
Interesting enough it’s possible to explain to the people that you want to be left alone when e.g. you have your laptop lid open. If done politely but firmly they take it easy and respect your space. I only point it out because it seems once the ice is broken there’s no way to keep that distance but it isn’t so.
