flamtap··on Show HN: Egg Gradients – Gradient color inspirations
That's exactly what I was talking about. Nice work!
flamtap··on Elephant 'smoking' footage baffles experts
I wonder if perhaps the elephant simply finds the outburst of smoke entertaining?
flamtap··on Show HN: Egg Gradients – Gradient color inspirations
I'd love if I could filter this by target color(s), and see a subset that approximate that selection. Being able to select "red to orange" or "blue to green" would be great! Even some approximation of hex codes would be cool too.
flamtap··on Firefox 59 released
I've had trouble accessing the Google Analytics dashboard(s) in FF as well. Nothing gets rendered except the background gradient.

In the interest of not using Chrome though, when I run into such issues I use Brave as it's Chromium-based and thus allows me to side-step those problems.

flamtap··on Vim Clutch – A hardware pedal for improved text editing (2012)
I have been using an Anker vertical mouse for about a year now. It's far from feature rich, but the build quality is impressive for a $20 mouse, and it's very comfortable. AAA battery life is good-great (it's not rechargable). I have medium-large hands for a male, and it sits in my hand great. As you get used to it, you do have to be careful you don't send it sailing across your desk when you go to reach for it!

flamtap··on Show HN: My embarrassing personal website from the 90s
I cannot express my disappointment in the "The Ultimate Quiz" being unavailable.

flamtap··on Slack client for the terminal
Slack gets pretty resource-intensive when the user is part of multiple workspaces. I know one of my co-workers is part of three or four, whereas I'm only part of the main company workspace. Co-worker's Slack memory usage is around triple that of my own.
flamtap··on Why It’s So Hard to Actually Work in Shared Offices
>So we can talk shit about the management and people we don't like!

Heh, at my last job we always went out to a pub for some burgers and beer on Fridays. 75% of the conversation revolved around exactly this. I found it an important way to decompress and let off steam.

flamtap··on Appropriate Uses for SQLite
Oh, I hope there is a Windows-compatible way to use this (i.e.: in a .NET dev environment), if not now, then in the future.
flamtap··on Waze Carpool
This instantly strikes me as more social than Uber/Lyft because you're not "hiring" anyone.

Hell, I bet users will even sit in the front seat together.

flamtap··on Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017)
I must admit, HN is the last place I expected to find a link to a Trailer Park Boys clip.
flamtap··on Teslasuit – full body haptic VR suit
I know I definitely want to try this. I don't think I would ever buy one to have in my home, but it really would be cool to and fun to try.
flamtap··on Microsoft Adds an OpenSSH Client to Windows 10
Please say powershell... Please say powershell...
flamtap··on TSA Plans to Use Face Recognition to Track Americans Through Airports
I didn't get the sense that they were implying that it was acceptable at all. My understanding of that comment was that they were pointing out that the problem is international, and doesn't only exist in America.
flamtap··on Comcast and other internet services seem a bit broken nationwide this morning
Sure seems that way. Just ask any Azure customer using the North and South central data centers.
flamtap··on All Azure North Central Databases Down
nuget.org has been failing for me. Can't get any packages to download.

All our North Central App Services and Azure SQL instances alike are down.

EDIT: https://status.nuget.org/ is showing that their services are unreachable. Azure portal is unresponsive as well.

EDIT2: Looks like the problem began at 2:41 eastern, and according to https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/status/ it's a problem with North Central.

EDIT3: Issue confirmed by MSFT https://twitter.com/AzureSupport/status/927629300370571264

flamtap··on Saying Goodbye to Firebug
Great for cheating at Facebook messenger games. Just send whatever score you like!
flamtap··on Thank You GitHub
> Pull request is an anti-pattern anyway.

Would you consider elaborating on this? I'm curious to hear what some negatives of the PR model might be, as I've recently taken a personal interest in dev workflows.

flamtap··on iMac Pro
Yeah, as much as I like tinkering on my own machine, if someone has a machine go down at work, or gets approved for an upgrade, etc., tech support gets a call and they come drop a new box on our desk. Not enough time in the day for us to make it more complicated than that.
flamtap··on iMac Pro
When nVidia's model numbers rolled over, I had a true moment of panic. Didn't know what to do with myself anymore.
flamtap··on Why SQL is beating NoSQL, and what this means for the future of data
Nothing helps you learn new tech quite like fighting to the death with it!
flamtap··on Malware identified in CCleaner 5.33
If being some sort of sysadmin craftsman gets you up in the morning, all the power to you. But for many others, "good enough" really is good enough.
flamtap··on Laverna – A Markdown note-taking app focused on privacy
Creating notes is not the problem people are trying to solve. They're trying to make managing them easier.
flamtap··on How a VC-funded company is undermining the open-source community
It's true; "fool me once" and all that. But it really doesn't make the world a better place to live if it's easier to get fired by accident.
flamtap··on Show HN: Version Control for Microsoft Word
Agreed on all points. This has law firms written all over it.
flamtap··on Happiness report: Norway is the happiest place on earth
What is your point?
flamtap··on What are some things you wish you knew when you started programming?
I am learning that sometimes people try to defend their ideas by coming up with ways to make their idea work. If accommodating the solution is more work than actually implementing it, it might not be the right solution.
flamtap··on What are some things you wish you knew when you started programming?
On #3: Agreed. In my experience, every time someone comes up with some grand design before writing any code, it's built on one or more assumptions about the problem. Then work begins, and one or more of the assumptions inevitably turn out to be incorrect and the whole design gets deflated.
flamtap··on Ask HN: I got duped into working on legacy code, should I leave?
Not necessarily. If you haven't been there for long (and it's not on your resume) it might not even be necessary to mention them directly. It could take a bit of linguistic technique, but if you frame things in such a way that describes what role you were hired for and what role you were given, I don't think anyone could fault you for being dissatisfied.
flamtap··on Show HN: Every Day Is Pi Day
I thought the same thing, that there was some sort of image being displayed. Whcih had me really interested for a moment.
