honestly i think the healthiest restaurant food i saw in brazil was the appetizer salad bar at the churrascaria, which is of course the kind of place where you eat until you literally can eat no more.
and, i'm fairly certain brazil was an extreme early adopter of pay-by-the-kilo buffets, if not the birthplace.
the traditional non-european food (apart from churr.) is basically modernized slave food - huge amounts of carb-based calories and deep fried food, for cheap, usually in the form of dense stews with starchy sides. southern/cajun food is very similar.
luckily, brazilians are an incredibly active people whose entertainment culture is centered around outdoor activities, and most of them do not indulge in meals out very often, but as with all other societies that become more affluent over time, the modern less-active lifestyle mixed with the traditional diet is not good.
the vast majority of people do not get that kind of stock, the ones who are conned into over-working for their low-six figure jobs (you clearly do not suffer from this, and have avoided being dumb with your time and compensation).
unless i am mis-reading your post.
this is important to keep in mind. the people who are the true high earners are making 500k+, sometimes married to someone else who also does. the real outliers make millions. they are the ones buying multi-$million houses in the bay area, LA, NY, etc. it's not mysterious overseas chinese and arab buyers. it's high earning americans taking home 30, 40 thousand dollars a month or who struck it big with equity.
it's a scam. don't fall for it. if you want to make millions, go for it, but don't commit slow suicide over the marginal difference in a high-tax state.
furthermore, 200k is NOT a stepping stone between 100k and 500k. that's not how it works for the vast majority of people, i.e. people who are not gifted at management and corporate politics. if you're in the true high earner range, you did a LOT of stuff to get there, such as medical school, law school, or similar, or busted your ass starting your own company years ago, or were simply granted some kind of employee stock which you had very little control over (good for you, not so good for anyone else on a normal salary).
well, apparently, yes, they were.
this is just how arizona does things.
here's another turn of phrase you might find handy: choose your battles.
no it's not. he's talking about a single store. in my town it's the homeless shelter and halfway house that causes a 5 block radius around it to be a terrible place to live.
we're not talking about building more housing, or zoning for high density commercial/residential mixes, or building public transit, or eliminating cars from downtown cores, or building more bus routes, or bikeshares, or uber, or any number of things that people actually want. we're talking about methadone clinics and halfway houses next to where affluent people live.
if you pretend like it's hard to understand why people don't want those things in their residential/shopping neighborhoods, you're just going to alienate everyone you communicate with. you can't just invoke the magic 'nimby' and get people to change their minds. __they don't want these things next to where they live__.
i think the real issue is opiates seem to be heavily affecting affluent suburban and urban people, who are predominantly white, and make up a huge amount of the tax base.
your mortgage numbers are way higher than reality. another concern is property taxes, but even at 2.5M, that's less than 30k/year in property taxes -- a working power couple or one single high earner can easily pay that. and in 20 years, 30k/year will have less than half the real value.
i think someone leveraging themselves into a 5-figure/month mortgage is the exception, not the rule.
tl;dr people are rich these days. my real concern is social unrest because of these insane imbalances in wealth distribution.
is this a trick question or something? i'm not going to jump into a swimming pool on purpose, but losing my phone isn't something that concerns me.
the habit is spreading as people start leaving socal in larger numbers though.
the slide-up menu in ios is pretty convenient.... you can do it when the phone is locked, even. i use it all the time to disable and enable wifi and bluetooth and use the flashlight.
this isn't just a concern at work, but also when hanging out with male friends also.
adding an attractive female will instantly change the dynamic. some men completely change their personalities when an attractive female is around. they'll start subtly insulting other guys, etc. i'm sure all men do it to a certain degree but some just are not socialized well enough to handle it.
i agree with your post but i never miss an opportunity to be pedantic -- reality is nobody has the full skillset to run a business -- in my mind it's really just a bunch of intangibles like vision (goal setting), determination, ability to take staggering amounts of abuse, ability to work insanely hard when it's necessary, and ability to know how to hire an expert in matters you are not skilled or experienced in, which means the ability to clearly communicate and know what to ask for through deductive reasoning.
most people have NONE of those skills, because working a normal job doesn't require any of them. zero, zip, nada, zilch. a high functioning professional has like 2 or 3 of those things. i would guess less than 5% of the general US population has those characteristics in the large amounts required to start a business from scratch, and most of the time that talent is channeled into something like e.g. investment banking or corporate law or being a surgeon.
on top of all that, the ability to take a financial and social risk is just too much to handle for most people. they just won't do it. period. you might as well ask them to sprout wings and fly.
but that's why starting a business has the potential to be so god damn lucrative -- basically, nobody else is doing it relative to the demand the overall economy generates.
i also agree that the only way you're really going to get anywhere is if you quit your job, or were fired. the slow drip of a paycheck is the biggest obstacle.
people need affordable supermarkets. this isn't complicated, it's unfortunately just not very profitable to serve these people.
i don't know about the chip cards but back in the day i used to do this by just calling and saying the stripe wore out, and i need an exact same replacement card.
this is basically one of the best possible outcomes involving life in california, so congrats.
if you don't speak either, hire a translator.
you just typed out two very convincing paragraphs that they are not, actually, in fact, in need of this service. you might think they are - in which case, you should make your own service, and sell it for the price point you think it really is at.
> Indian and Pakistani restaurants in San Francisco
to everyone reading, if your target demographic is neighborhood restaurants run by people on razor thin margins who want to pay peanuts for a 24/7 service that will probably wake the founding team up at 3am fairly regularly for several months if not years on end until they make sufficient money (if ever), listen to this guy, his advice is spot-on.
good luck with the taxes thing though.
notice how buddhism and stoicism is all of a sudden so fascinating to everyone in the 'scene' ?
