fl4regun··on 5th Heat Dome Expands Across Europe: 40°C+ Target Western and Central Europe
Seems likely that within our lifetime multiple countries in europe may turn into deserts, and there is little we can do against it except for maybe attempt to terraform the climate by seeding clouds or changing ecosystem flora to something resilient in the face of 40C weather. Losing a huge amount of food production would be my greatest concern.
fl4regun··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
perhaps if you read the comment chain you would realize I'm not the one who introduced this into the conversation. Sorry that you disagree with my position.
fl4regun··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
IME many big companies are filled with mediocre morons, or at least people who just don't care enough to do better than mediocre. Still not the fault of brown people either way.
fl4regun··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering
Economics would have always created this downward pressure on demand for software engineers regardless, either companies would replace the number of engineers they need with AI, or with low paid offshored workers.

Indy devs are professionals too. Just because they aren't gargantuan megacorps doesn't make them amateurs. See: Expedition 33, made by formerly Ubisoft developers. Same people, different company, the devs themselves will still be around, regardless whether the AAA studio is still there.
fl4regun··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
are you referring to this section? > Verification is different from generation: Models scoring 98 can solve problems but can't always explain why their approach works at the level a human mathematician would. It doesn't say it can't explain why with any accuracy, it just says it can't *always* explain at the level of a mathematician, but most of us don't have such a mathematician at our beck and call to answer our questions anyways (thinking of the perspective of a self-learner outside of formal education)

Not sure what point you are making, it is more prevalent now, but it would be wrong to say this is because mars bars are more expensive and smaller.
fl4regun··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
why does it have to be just about the AAA industry? Indy games are amazing now, and usually not sold at full price compared to console games, probably most of my favourite games of the past decade are indy devs or studios.

TV's for one, have become insanely cheap. You can get 4k TVs for like, nothing, especially after inflation adjustments from the 2010s. Bigger panels, brighter screens, too bad we started shoving stupid and annoying OSes and Ads in them.

it is not "pure fructose" - they have different levels but usually it is 50% fructose syrups. Lots of fruits have similar ratios to that too, fructose isn't the problem so much as the quantity of it being ingested, but high quantities are glucose or other sugars are also bad when they come in liquid or otherwise highly digestible and fast absorbing foods. Also sucrose, which is table sugar, is indeed also 50% fructose.

not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but I really do not care about shrinkflation as it related to candy, chips, chocolates, and other junk food. Obesogenic foods should be more expensive not less, even if only because it's a price incentive against eating unhealthy.

fl4regun··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
I've recently taken to learning about plant identification, it's interesting to make observations about all the flora you see walking about. Will need to note these books for later!
fl4regun··on I added a real-time chat to my blog, people used it to attack me
I'm mostly curious why anyone would bother with doing attacks like this to some random individuals personal blog, was it one person or multiple people? What was the motivation? Is it just bots crawling the internet to spread hate?

A sad state of affairs, but certainly seems like having a strictly moderated comment section is a better option for a site like this.

wiki is usually not great at teaching new concepts, better as a reference for someone who already learned something.
fl4regun··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
the commenter was talking about the internet in the 2000s, as am I. I was only born in the 90s.
fl4regun··on How Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
i don't think it's fair to say it was just CS majors, I'm a 90s baby and i was on the web in the 2000s when i was in middle school, I still remember reading web comics and forums, messaging people on MSN and playing MMOs with online friends, looking up gameFAQs to get past sticking points. This could just be me, but it felt more social and personal.

maybe it is because I am biased but I have almost no expectation for AI to act "ethically"
fl4regun··on We Gave GPT 5.6 Sol a Real Business. It Lied, Spammed, and Lost $447
i don't like AI but the 24 hour timeframe conmbined with unspent capital being worth nothing makes this experiment a foregone conclusion. It was basically set up to fail.

I was more so asking how does it know where to look to find information, if things are no longer being indexed.

but how does chatGPT find information?
fl4regun··on 'VPNs are lawful technical tools,' says EU Court in landmark copyright ruling
I know what you mean, but I think most people are not thinking of it in this way. They are thinking of VPN as a service provided by companies such as Nord VPN, and mostly used to get around region locked content or keep your ISP from being aware you are downloading things you shouldn't be.
fl4regun··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
just don't forget these are temporary, eventually there will be "enough" data centers, and none of these jobs will exist, so if you are planning a 20 year + career, don't count on this being the norm.

fl4regun··on Substack writers, you need a website
Is this a real thing that happens anymore? I don't recall when the last time someone made a new genuine connection through one of the major social media platforms (speaking of IG, FB, Twitter, primarily). LinkedIn, I guess comes to mind, but that's just been mostly career connections/job searching, and maybe Discord. Pretty much everyone I know (in my age range around 25-30) has only met new people from either participating in social settings in real life (climbing gym, playing volleyball, in person events), or through friends of friends. Otherwise it seems like most people just use IG or other DM's to try to hit on people or sell them something (usually unsuccessfully).
fl4regun··on Magnolias are so old that they're pollinated by beetles, not bees (2025)
the ones I have are from https://onplants.ca/shop/asimina-triloba/ They claim to be grown from seed and so should be viable for producing fruit (as long as you have multiple plants). We will see in multiple years time how they do. The ones on the site you linked seem to be grown from seed as well, and seem to offer 100-180cm sized seedlings, I'm guessing those are 2 maybe 3 years old, mine are much smaller, about 50cms. Probably a better place to purchase from if you don't want to wait so long to mature them!
fl4regun··on Magnolias are so old that they're pollinated by beetles, not bees (2025)
I will try to check later in the year! I planted a few of my own actually, but considering they are still saplings, it will take some time before i get any fruit myself. I also managed to find some at a park nearby, but I don't think those are producing anything either.
fl4regun··on Magnolias are so old that they're pollinated by beetles, not bees (2025)
they are interesting plants, not many people cultivate them though, what do you do with the fruit? I hear it spoils fast and is not very marketable because of its lack of shelf life.

edit: Just saw your reply to the other guy, actually I'm in Ontario, any chance I can get a fruit or two :) ? I've been wanting to try it

fl4regun··on The lost joy of music piracy
here's a counter example: the opening to mirror's edge is not hosted on spotify (last time I checked, in my region at least), and it's an old favourite of mine (and I'm sure many people who played the game too)
