fkarg··on Deepmind Alphadev: Faster sorting algorithms discovered using deep RL
As I understand it it kind of _did that_, just in an extremely guided kind of way, which is why it produced results in some reasonable amount of time (probably)
fkarg··on Plain Text Accounting
same. been using it for years now, and even wrote my own plugins for structures I used often
fkarg··on Ask HN: Can someone ELI5 transformers and the “Attention is all we need” paper?
Uhm nope but here's a ~70min talk I held about it: https://github.com/fkarg/things-to-talk-about/blob/master/tr...

Not sure how well the slides can be understood by themselves, though I tried to be accommodating for that

fkarg··on Pixel phones are sold with bootloader unlocking disabled
except that their employer[0] doesn't own it either

[0] except for the employer being google in this case

fkarg··on Apple Is a Chinese Company
good thing that the US and most other nations are actually recognizing that then /s
fkarg··on EditAnything: Segment Anything + ControlNet + BLIP2 + Stable Diffusion
the relevant part is the masks, and so far it's the biggest dataset in existence, with about 400x more masks than the next smaller one.

: excluding non-public ones

fkarg··on EditAnything: Segment Anything + ControlNet + BLIP2 + Stable Diffusion
they described it in their paper: they created it themselves. they had/have a loop of having humans annotate images their system was uncertain about, but the released one was fully automated.
fkarg··on YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki is stepping down
they track externally and extrapolate, so it's skewed based on audience (they also made a 'backup' from when yt still showed them)

still, I found it more useful than not

fkarg··on Hans Niemann Suing Magnus Carlsen, Chess.com, and Hikaru Nakamura
Not sure it's helping his case, really
fkarg··on That Shouldn't Happen – UnreachableException in .NET 7
it helps significantly for debugging
fkarg··on Someday aliens will land and all will be fine until we explain our calendar
Isn't there also additional calendars in at least Japanese and Chinese culture?
fkarg··on Why Haskell Is Interesting? (2005)
1) They're not the same kind of loops though

2) They're not primitives. It's very much possible to build for and while loops from elements in the Haskell standard library, because you have more powerful primitives to work with. Most languages have loops as primitives.

fkarg··on Rust – A hard decision pays off
but it's the same with every hype: there's something at its core and might be worth checking out
fkarg··on How messed up was Germany's energy policy?
Not was. Is.
fkarg··on Container loaded with discarded lithium batteries catches fire enroute to port
two thoughts:

- there's people trying to make this case currently

- when we scaled fossil fuels, terraforming was pure science fiction only, not something anyone realistically expected. it only started to become visible some 50 years later.

I don't think we'll make the same mistakes, but there'll always be new and more expensive mistakes to make.

fkarg··on Tesla cut a steering component from some cars, didn’t tell customers
Funny thing is, they removed Radar because it provided less accurate data on depth than their vision system. I doubt that there's much gain in including an additional source of depth information.

Sure, it might be more precise than what is possible with vision alone, but it's also not needed.

fkarg··on Tesla cut a steering component from some cars, didn’t tell customers
I wonder. Even with the (loud) minority of extreme fanboys, I'd argue that most fans probably know more about Tesla's strategy and the current tech than most others.
fkarg··on Why Is C Faster Than Java (2009)
Anyone knows if a git (partial) rewrite has been attempted in Rust yet?

Might be worth a shot — should be similar performance with stronger guarantees, and last I checked git was a cesspool with bash and Perl mixed in all over the place.

fkarg··on Googling for Software Development: What Developers Search for and What They Find
yeah, when I did, it felt like Google just ignored the negation. the results didn't materially differ with or without it.
fkarg··on They don't even know the fundamentals
I would be interested what field you're talking about - could be any rather specialized field, really
fkarg··on Ask HN: Is the Great Resignation in tech real? If so, why?
the first three should expect a pay rise on average (similarly to what's happening), as most job changes are associated with a pay rise.

on 4: there is some systemic data that has been available for years that this is the case. Wouldn't be surprised for the awareness to have spread and people adapting accordingly.

fkarg··on The FDA as it is today is not up to the task of managing our medical system
This is a partial account of how the FDA and the medical establishment failed America in fighting COVID-19, and how the inherent structure of the FDA made the pandemic worse. They prevented individuals and companies from creating and providing timely drugs and tests to combat COVID-19, contributing to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans and trillions of dollars of lost economic output.
fkarg··on Tony Seba: The Great Disruption – Rethinking Energy, Transportation, Food
Virtual presentation from Tony Seba to the Council of State Governments on the occasion of the CSG East 2021 Annual Meeting.
