fjordan··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
https://www.indiehackers.com/ is a great source for this sort of question. They provide various filtering mechanisms as well such as revenue, number of employees, business model, location, etc.
fjordan··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
https://tv.youtube.com/ is also down
fjordan··on Ask HN: How would you turn Twitter around?
Pitch it to Amazon as a proper monitor for their AWS Cloud.
fjordan··on Earthquake Shakes Swath of Midwest from Nebraska to Texas
I'm on a high floor of a highrise in Uptown, Dallas. The building was shaking and swaying hard enough to wake me from sleep.
fjordan··on Why Uber Engineering Switched from Postgres to MySQL
Tools such as the percona toolkit (https://www.percona.com/software/mysql-tools/percona-toolkit) provide the ability to perform safe and performant online alters for MySQL. Behind the scenes it actually creates a new table with the new schema and utilizes triggers to apply writes to the new table as the original data is being copied. Once it completes the table is renamed and the triggers are removed.

Percona also recommends using this tool to safely perform alters for any Galera-based replication product (Percona XtraDB Cluster, MariaDB Galera Cluster, etc.)

fjordan··on Elassandra: Elasticsearch implemented on top of Cassandra
I believe he now works with DataStax on their DSE Solr product.
fjordan··on Graceful server restart with Go
Thanks for this.

Were you able to publish your changes either on a fork or in a PR?

fjordan··on Graceful server restart with Go
Goagain by Richard Crowley is a great package that we are using for graceful restarts: https://github.com/rcrowley/goagain

EDIT: added author

fjordan··on AWS issues unavoidable reboot schedules with short notice on many EC2 instances
can someone explain the downvotes?
fjordan··on AWS issues unavoidable reboot schedules with short notice on many EC2 instances
CVE-2014-6271 was posted on the AWS Security Bulletin earlier today:

http://aws.amazon.com/security/security-bulletins/CVE_2014_6...

My guess is that they cannot rely on all users to perform these updates.

fjordan··on Ask HN: Dev promoted to more strategic role in startup. What literature?
On a related note, this book (http://www.treesmapsandtheorems.com/) is excellent.

The author approaches communication from the principle of Gestalt psychology and really helps one understand how our minds communicate.

fjordan··on Postgres-XL: Scalable Open Source PostgreSQL-based Database Cluster
From the description it sounds as if this provides synchronous replication. How does this work in a WAN environment?
fjordan··on Ask HN: Is UML still relevant today?
If not UML, what do you recommend for most effective communication?

ERDs? Documentation tools? Or do you simply tell the engineer to read the code?

rewardStyle, Full-time - Dallas, TX - (https://www.rewardstyle.com/)

Engineers in rewardStyle's product development team are responsible for developing key features for rewardStyle's state-of-the-art web and mobile applications and services. Developers on any part of the stack are encouraged to apply (front-end, back-end, middleware).

rewardStyle's international platform presents a number of challenges that require intimate understanding of distributed web architectures and load balancing, synchronous and asynchronous database clustering and replication, algorithms, data structures, JavaScript development and libraries, DOM layout and styling, as well as network security protocols and intrusion detection.

To qualify for this position, please present an example of your work that would demonstrate your engineering skills to dev.jobs@rewardstyle.com

fjordan··on US-East AWS Connectivity Issues
This, in addition to the increase in traffic we detected directly before, smells of DOS. Also, it is Friday the 13th.
fjordan··on US-East AWS Connectivity Issues
We are able to reach some servers but not all in our us-east AZ and notice it seems to be random.
fjordan··on GitHub was down
Maybe someone from GitHub can tell us.

I'm having a difficult time reasoning as to the motivation behind all the DDOS attacks. Why would anyone want to disrupt a tool for open, public collaboration used by many free and open-source technologies.

Anyone have any insight?

fjordan··on Collection of the best fonts for programming

fjordan··on Arch Linux: MariaDB replaces MySQL in repositories
Interesting performance comparison here between MariaDB, Percona Server, and MySQL http://vbtechsupport.com/657/2/
fjordan··on Postgres Demystified
One feature I've missed while using Postgres is the built-in REPLACE INTO that MySQL provides. I know it's possible to create a function to accomplish this in Postgres for specific cases, but is there some general variant which could be applied to multiple tables?
fjordan··on Ask HN: what was the best life/programming choice you ever made?
This is very interesting. I have been able to tell that so many foods, not just alcohol, caffeine, and sugar are able to impact my mind and mood. Specifically, I am referring to different amounts and types of fat as well as the effects of different foods based on the glycemic index spectrum.

What effects have you noticed?

fjordan··on Google Election Results
This table of calls by network is a nice display of information as well: http://elections.nytimes.com/2012/results/president/network-...

fjordan··on Jobs vs Passive Income
I believe the purpose of the article is to get readers to step back and realize the absurdity of comparison between having a job versus having passive income.

Yes, your summary is correct, but short sided in that many need this sort of realization to remind those of us who are going to work for a boss everyday what other (and better) options are available.
